The Health
Ministry began the construction of a hospital in Jakarta on Tuesday, which was
expected to serve as the country's first national center for brain and nerve
disease treatments.
“Up to now,
Indonesia hasn't had a special, integrated center for comprehensive brain and
nerve disease treatments. The center must operate according to evidence and be
able to compete at the global level,” Health Minister Endang Rahayu
Sedyaningsih said during the groundbreaking ceremony of the National Brain
Center Hospital in Jakarta.
Endang said
that Indonesia required such a center as strokes had been the main cause of
deaths and disabilities in nearly all hospitals across the country.
She said
that the number of people experiencing strokes had been increasing each year,
as was the number of those suffering from other neurological disorders, such as
dementia and traumatic head and spinal injuries.
Endang said
the hospital would provide comprehensive “brain check-ups” among other medical
services, Antara reported.
