McDonalds stops sale of sate wrap after allergy death

DutchNews.nl, Friday 04 April 2014

(NOS)
McDonalds has stopped the sale of a 'Small Wrap Sate' following the death of a 17-year-old youth who suffered an extreme allergic reaction, the NRC said on Friday.

The NRC bases its claim on emails from McDonalds Nederland director Jo Sempels which have been leaked via Publeaks, a website for whistleblowers set up by the Dutch media.

The emails, sent to 'restaurant managers' state that the wraps have been withdrawn from sale 'immediately... out of respect for the family of the dead youth.'

A spokesman for McDonalds has confirmed the product has been withdrawn but declined to give any further information, the NRC said.

The paper says only 4,000 to 6,000 people in the Netherlands suffer from a potentially fatal food allergy and deaths are extremely rare.

The sate wrap, which cost €2, consisted of fried chicken and onions in spicy peanut sauce. Sate, which originates from Indonesia, is a very popular dish in the Netherlands.
