“…… Should I use Doctors and Drugs to Heal Me or Spiritual Methods?

"Dear Kryon, I have heard that you should stay natural and not use the science on the planet for healing. It does not honor God to go to a doctor. After all, don't you say that we can heal with our minds? So why should we ever go to a doctor if we can do it ourselves? Not only that, my doctor isn't enlightened, so he has no idea about my innate or my spiritual body needs. What should I do?"

First, Human Being, why do you wish to put so many things in boxes? You continue to want a yes and no answer for complex situations due to your 3D, linear outlook on almost everything. Learn to think out of the 3D box! Look at the heading of this section [above]. It asks which one should you do. It already assumes you can't do both because they seem dichotomous.

Let's use some spiritual logic: Here is a hypothetical answer, "Don't go to a doctor, for you can heal everything with your mind." So now I will ask: How many of you can do that in this room right now? How many readers can do that with efficiency right now? All of you are old souls, but are you really ready to do that? Do you know how? Do you have really good results with it? Can you rid disease and chemical imbalance with your mind right now?

I'm going to give you a truth, whether you choose to see it or not. You're not ready for that! You are not yet prepared to take on the task of full healing using your spiritual tools. Lemurians could do that, because Pleiadians taught them how! It's one of the promises of God, that there'll come a day when your DNA works that efficiently and you will be able to walk away from drug chemistry and the medical industry forever, for you'll have the creator's energy working at 100 percent, something you saw within the great masters who walked the earth.

This will be possible within the ascended earth that you are looking forward to, dear one. Have you seen the news lately? Look out the window. Is that where you are now? We are telling you that the energy is going in that direction, but you are not there yet.

Let those who feel that they can heal themselves begin the process of learning how. Many will be appreciative of the fact that you have some of the gifts for this now. Let the process begin, but don't think for a moment that you have arrived at a place where every health issue can be healed with your own power. You are students of a grand process that eventually will be yours if you wish to begin the quantum process of talking to your cells. Some will be good at this, and some will just be planting the seeds of it.

Now, I would like to tell you how Spirit works and the potentials of what's going to happen in the next few years. We're going to give the doctors of the planet new inventions and new science. These will be major discoveries about the Human body and of the quantum attributes therein.

Look at what has already happened, for some of this science has already been given to you and you are actually using it. Imagine a science that would allow the heart to be transplanted because the one you have is failing. Of course! It's an operation done many times a month on this planet. That information came from the creator, did you realize that? It didn't drop off the shelf of some dark energy library to be used in evil ways.

So, if you need a new heart, Lightworker, should you go to the doctor or create one with your mind? Until you feel comfortable that you can replace your heart with a new one by yourself, then you might consider using the God-given information that is in the hands of the surgeon. For it will save your life, and create a situation where you stay and continue to send your light to the earth! Do you see what we're saying?

You can also alter that which is medicine [drugs] and begin a process that is spectacular in its design, but not very 3D. I challenge you to begin to use what I would call the homeopathic principle with major drugs. If some of you are taking major drugs in order to alter your chemistry so that you can live better and longer, you might feel you have no choice. "Well, this is keeping me alive," you might say. "I don't yet have the ability to do this with my consciousness, so I take the drugs."

In this new energy, there is something else that you can try if you are in this category. Do the following with safety, intelligence, common sense and logic. Here is the challenge: The principle of homeopathy is that an almost invisible tincture of a substance is ingested and is seen by your innate. Innate "sees" what you are trying to do and then adjusts the body's chemistry in response. Therefore, you might say that you are sending the body a "signal for balance." The actual tincture is not large enough to affect anything chemically - yet it works!

The body [innate] sees what you're trying to do and then cooperates. In a sense, you might say the body is healing itself because you were able to give it instructions through the homeopathic substance of what to do. So, why not do it with a major drug? Start reducing the dosage and start talking to your cells, and see what happens. If you're not successful, then stop the reduction. However, to your own amazement, you may often be successful over time.

You might be able to take the dosage that you're used to and cut it to at least a quarter of what it was. It is the homeopathy principle and it allows you to keep the purpose of the drug, but reduce it to a fraction of a common 3D dosage. You're still taking it internally, but now it's also signaling in addition to working chemically. The signal is sent, the body cooperates, and you reduce the chance of side effects.

You can't put things in boxes of yes or no when it comes to the grand system of Spirit. You can instead use spiritual logic and see the things that God has given you on the planet within the inventions and processes. Have an operation, save your life, and stand and say, "Thank you, God, for this and for my being born where these things are possible." It's a complicated subject, is it not? Each of you is so different! You'll know what to do, dear one. Never stress over that decision, because your innate will tell you what is appropriate for you if you're willing to listen. ….”

US morning-after pill approved for 15-year-olds

BBC News, 1 May 2013

Under a court ruling, Plan B must be
available to all women without a
prescription
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the "morning-after" pill without a prescription for women aged 15 and over.

Proof-of-age will be required to purchase the drug, Plan B. The decision comes a month after a judge ordered the drug to be made available to girls of all childbearing ages.

The FDA said its decision was not a response to the court ruling.

Reproductive rights groups approved the FDA move but called for fuller access.

On Tuesday, the FDA said its decision was in response to an amended marketing plan from the drug's maker, Teva Pharmaceuticals, to sell Plan B without a prescription to women 15 and older.

But the move comes days before the deadline to comply with a New York district judge's order to make the drug available over the counter to girls of all childbearing ages.

Obama administration criticised

The judge criticised the Obama administration for imposing an age-17 limit.

In 2011, the FDA said it had concluded the "morning after" pill could be safely used by girls of child-bearing age.

But in an unprecedented move, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled the agency.

She said there was not enough evidence from all potential ages to support removing over-the-counter restrictions.

The Obama administration was accused of bowing to pressure from social conservatives.

The reproductive rights group that brought the lawsuit said on Tuesday it will continue its legal fight if need be.

Lowering the age limit "may reduce delays for some young women but it does nothing to address the significant barriers that far too many women of all ages will still find if they arrive at the drugstore without identification", said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights.

Bill Gates Offers Grant for ‘Next Generation Condom’

ABC News, Sydney Lupkin, March 25, 2013

Bill Gates’ latest project gives a whole new meaning to the old Microsoft slogan, “Your potential. Our Passion.”

The Microsoft founder and its former CEO is getting out of software and into, er, hardware.
Gates will give a $100,000 grant to whoever can invent the “next generation condom” through The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges in Global Health. The estimated 80 grant recipients can then apply for a follow-up grant worth up to $1 million.

“Is it possible to develop a product without this stigma, or better, one that is felt to enhance pleasure?” the Grand Challenge prompt asks.  ”If so, would such a product lead to substantial benefits for global health, both in terms of reducing the incidence of unplanned pregnancies and in prevention of infection with HIV or other STIs [sexually transmitted infections]?”

The challenge prompt notes that condoms are effective at preventing pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections like HIV, but their design hasn’t changed in centuries and people just don’t want to use them. As such, Gates is asking inventors to create something that does the job, but increases condom desirability by preserving sensation and enhancing user experience.

Between 69 and 80 percent of teens in the United States use condoms, but middle-aged adults aren’t so careful because they mistakenly think they aren’t at risk for contracting sexually transmitted infections, said Sheryl Kingsberg, who specializes in behavioral medicine at University Hospitals’ department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Cleveland.

Even when a condom is being used, however, it’s not always used the right way because it isn’t intuitive, Kingsberg said.

The University of Washington and a company called Origami are already working on ways to build a better condom, according to the foundation’s blog. The university is working on a fabric with tiny fibers that can physically block sperm and then dissolve within a few minutes or a few days.

Origami has three designs for rippled, folding condoms designed to enhance pleasure and be put on quickly.

Gates’ call for condom inventors is a “wonderful idea” and raises awareness, but it only solves half the problem, Kingsberg said. The other half will be encouraging people to use condoms with better education.

“There are many ways in which the current generation of condom can fail,” she said. “Maybe this is Windows Vista version. We can certainly get to Windows 7, 8 and 9, but we need to encourage people to use it.”

The deadline for proposal submissions is May 7. Winners will be notified in November.

“…  3 - Longer Life is Going to Happen, But…

Here is one that is a review. We keep bringing it up because Humans don't believe it. If you're going to start living longer, there are those who are frightened that there will be overpopulation. You've seen the way it is so far, and the geometric progression of mathematics is absolute and you cannot change it. So if you look at the population of the earth and how much it has shifted in the last two decades, it's frightening to you. What would change that progression?

The answer is simple, but requires a change in thinking. The answer is a civilization on the planet who understands a new survival scenario. Instead of a basic population who has been told to have a lot of children to enhance the race [old survival], they begin to understand the logic of a new scenario. The Akashic wisdom of the ages will start to creep in with a basic survival scenario shift. Not every single woman will look at herself and say, "The clock is ticking," but instead can say, "I have been a mother 14 times in a row. I'm going to sit this one out." It's a woman who understands that there is no loss or guilt in this, and actually feels that the new survival attribute is to keep the family small or not at all! Also, as we have said before, even those who are currently ignorant of population control will figure out what is causing babies to be born [Kryon joke].

Part of the new Africa will be education and healing, and eventually a zero population growth, just like some of the first-world nations currently have. Those who are currently tied to a spiritual doctrine will actually have that doctrine changed (watch for it) regarding Human birth. Then they will be able to make free choice that is appropriate even within the establishment of organized religion. You see, things are going to change where common sense will say, "Perhaps it would help the planet if I didn't have children or perhaps just one child." Then the obvious, "Perhaps I can exist economically better and be wiser with just one. It will help the one!" Watch for these changes. For those of you who are steeped in the tradition of the doctrines and would say that sounds outrageously impossible, I give you the new coming pope [Kryon smile]. For those of you who feel that uncontrolled procreation is inevitable, I encourage you to see statistics you haven't seen or didn't care to look at yet about what first-world countries have already accomplished on their own, without any mandates. Medical advocates battle the AIDS stigma in Morocco’s religious heartlands

The Raw Story, AFP, March 16, 2013

“I don’t have anything,” said Asmaa with a sigh as she stepped out of the mobile clinic offering free AIDS tests in Sale, a conservative city in Morocco where the veiled young woman lives.

Around 29,000 people are infected with HIV in a country of 33 million, according to estimates by the Pan African AIDS Organisation (OPALS), a relatively low figure compared with other Arab countries.

But large swathes of Moroccan society are religious, with sex outside of marriage and adultery still illegal, and the AIDS virus has long been a taboo subject.

Around 80 percent of victims don’t even know they are HIV carriers, according to OPALS, which was set up in 1994 to combat the spread of the disease and is active in 19 different parts of the country.

While only a small proportion of the national population is infected (0.1 percent), the virus is concentrated in two specific areas — the southwestern tourist region of Agadir, notably among prostitutes and gay men, and the northern town of Nador, among drug addicts.

Across much of Morocco, conservative religious attitudes and the stigma attached to AIDS can complicate the efforts made in testing, treatment and prevention.

But in Sale’s Douar Jbala, a stronghold of the Islamist Justice and Development Party that heads Morocco’s coalition government, OPALS officials carrying out the AIDS tests are happy with the response to their campaign.

Like other poor neighbourhoods, Douar Jbala is “vulnerable”, because of the conservative attitudes and prejudices that hold sway here, so the medics welcome the large turnout.

“There is an enthusiasm, particularly among the women. It’s really important for us, it shows that it is no longer such a taboo,” said Dr Zakia Afkari, supervising the operation in partnership with Morocco’s health ministry.

These young women “don’t hesitate to come on their own,” she added, before heading back into the clinic where dozens of people were waiting to be tested.

Asmaa, 21, said she decided to show up “without thinking too much” about it.

In her age category (15-24), 61 percent of those infected are women.

“I came across it by chance when I noticed a banner inviting locals to take the AIDS test. I hesitated for a moment and then came to the clinic,” she explained.

“Now I’m glad I did,” she added with a smile, holding a piece of cotton wool on her finger where the blood sample was taken.

There was no sign of embarrassment among those standing outside the truck where the free and anonymous tests were performed.

“For me there’s no shame in being tested for AIDS. It’s not a problem, it’s not against my religion,” said 18-year-old Khadija.

Health experts say Morocco is ahead of other Arab countries partly because it began its anti-AIDS campaign early, in the 1990s, developing infrastructure to support victims of the virus, such as a hospital in the city of Casablanca run by the Association for the Fight against AIDS.

But big challenges remain, especially in overcoming social prejudices surrounding the disease itself, said Dr Kamal Alami, who heads the UN’s AIDS/HIV programme in Morocco.

“Despite all the efforts, the taboo still exists,” Alami said. “There is a problem of discrimination and stigmatisation for people who live with the HIV virus.”

“Most of them prefer not to be seen (to be infected), and this is often an obstacle in the fight against AIDS, in terms of prevention and support.”

The clinic in Douar Jbala is one step in the struggle against that stigma.

“We have to get out among the poor and vulnerable, to make contact with them and raise their awareness,” said OPALS campaign organiser Khadija Ouazzani.

Contraception could save world $5.7 bn: UN report

The Catholic Church campaigned
against the bill
Philippines President Benigno Aquino has signed into law a bill providing for free access to contraception and family planning.

Supporters say the law, which took 14 years to pass, will reduce poverty and maternal mortality in a country with the highest birth rate in the region.

The Roman Catholic Church repeatedly tried to block the bill.

Parliament failed to pass the measure several times before approving a final version on 19 December.

The law is due to take effect in mid-January, said presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte.

"The passage into law of the Responsible Parenthood Act closes a highly divisive chapter of our history - a chapter borne of the convictions of those who argued for, or against this act," she said.

"At the same time, it opens the possibility of co-operation and reconciliation... engagement and dialogue characterised not by animosity, but by our collective desire to better the welfare of the Filipino people."

The BBC's Kate McGeown reports from the capital, Manila, that even now the bill has become law, the Church and its political allies could still derail it.

Several bishops have already threatened to contest the bill's legality in the Supreme Court.

More than 80% of the population in the Philippines is Catholic, and the Church has had the support of many politicians, media commentators, and businessmen.

Condoms are widely sold in the Philippines, but at a price that many people cannot afford.

Many maternity hospitals are struggling to cope with the number of births, and the UN appealed to the Philippines earlier this year to pass the family planning bill.

A government health survey in 2011 found that the maternal mortality rate had risen by 36% between 2006 and 2010.

Dutch minister on sex education as an export product

RNW, 21 June 2011, by RNW News Desk

(Photo: ANP)

Following RNW's recent report about the praise for Dutch sex education policy from Cuba's 'sex chief' Mariela Castro, International Cooperation Minister Ben Knapen gives his views on the subject and responds to Ms Castro's words of appreciation.

What is the minister’s opinion of sex education as a Dutch export product?

An RNW website about love, sex,
relationships and everything in between.

Here you'll find loads of blush-free
information to help you improve your
sex life and stay healthy and happy.
"The Dutch approach to sex education has proved effective in the Netherlands. Mariela Castro refers to this model as a good export product and I am in complete agreement with her. It’s no coincidence that sexual health and sexual rights are one of the four themes central to our new development policy."

How can sex education policy be improved?

"The effects of Dutch policy are carefully scrutinised so the policy can be adapted if necessary. At the moment, for instance, we have noticed a decrease in condom use by young people and a corresponding increase in sexually transmitted diseases. This means we have to increase the emphasis on preventing STDs in our information."

What exactly is the message to be conveyed?

"In many countries there are still strong taboos about young people having sex, about homosexuality, about HIV/AIDS and the right of girls and women to make their own choices about sex. Taboos like these must be overcome if we are to eliminate problems like high mortality in childbirth, discrimination, AIDS and sexual violence."

Indonesian Police Say Alleged Gang Rape of Teen 'Unforgivable'

Jakarta Globe, March 03, 2011

Indonesian police said on Thursday that four officers would be charged over the “unforgivable” gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in Papua province.

The officers, along with three civilians, allegedly took turns raping the girl in a house in Biak city in February, Papua provincial spokesman Wachyono told AFP.

“We have completed our investigations. Some of the suspects confessed to the rape, some didn’t,” he said.

“But we have spoken to witnesses and collected enough evidence to show they were guilty of rape and we’ll be taking the case to court.”

Local media reported that the men locked the teenager in a room and raped her repeatedly over a period of days. She was beaten if she resisted and lost consciousness as a result of the abuse.

“The officers committed a grave wrongdoing, a violation that is unforgivable and uncondonable and deserving of severe punishment. They have sullied the good name of the national police,” Wachyono said.

Police are also investigating the alleged rape of a Papuan women who was forced to give oral sex to officers while she was being held in custody in the Papuan provincial capital of Jayapura.

Three police officers are suspected of raping the married woman on multiple occasions between November and January, while she was being held for alleged gambling.

Local media reported that she had tried to kill herself during the ordeal.

“The victim’s family have lodged a police report so we’re starting criminal charges against the officers,” Wachyono said, adding that the suspects were being “made to stand in the sun” as punishment.

“At the moment, the officers are receiving disciplinary sanction. They are being detained for 21 days, made to stand in the sun and have had their promotions delayed,” he said.

Jayapura city police chief Imam Setiawan resigned on Tuesday over the case, a rare move by a senior officer in a police force that is notorious for corruption and torture of detainees.

Indonesian security forces are frequently accused of rights violations in Papua, which has seen a low-level insurgency by poorly-armed rebels since its incorporation into Indonesia in the 1960s.

Human rights activists and the United Nations say Indonesian police regularly torture and beat suspects in custody, while extortion is rife throughout the country’s prisons.

Lack of Sex Education Puts Indonesia Children at Risk: Experts

Jakarta Globe, Dessy Sagita & Shari Nijman | December 10, 2010

Jakarta. There are very serious consequences that could result from Indonesian society’s continued reluctance to acknowledge that children need to learn about sex early on at home and in schools, experts warned on Friday.

There are very serious consequences that could result
from Indonesian society’s continued reluctance to
acknowledge that children need to learn about sex early
on at home and in schools, experts warned on Friday.
(Antara Photo)
For instance, Oldri Shearli Mukuan, an activist from the HIV-Positive Indonesian Women’s Association, said that when she had her first period, her mother warned her to be careful but did not explain how or why.

“By the time I was 16, I was a heroin addict and the victim of frequent sexual abuse by my boyfriend, who was also an addict,” she said at an Atma Jaya Catholic University seminar about sexual education for teenagers.

If she had been armed with proper information about sex and drugs and their consequences, she said, she probably would have made better choices.

The problem, according to Irwandi, a psychology professor at Atma Jaya Catholic University, is there is hardly any place children or teenagers can go to receive proper information.

Ideally, he said, schools should be the most trusted and neutral institution where sex is discussed. But most education institutions either shy away from the topic or don’t provide comprehensive information.

In the early 1990s, he said, he tried to include sex education in the schools curriculum, but an official from the Ministry of Health said he could never mention the word “condom” in class.

“He said I would have to go over his dead body before I could mention the word ‘condom’ at school,” he said.

Irwandi acknowledged the Indonesian education system has changed a lot since then, but limitations still exist because schools mostly talk about chastity instead of the real concept of sex.

“Children at most Indonesian schools are overprotected,” he said.

Nia Dinata, a prominent film director and producer who spoke at the seminar, said she had problems teaching her teenage son about sex because his school only provided him information about reproductive organs.

“I once asked my son if he knew what sex was, and he said according to school, sex was gender,” she said, adding that very few schools include comprehensive information about sex in their curriculum.

Dhita Wijaya, 19, a psychology student at Atma Jaya Catholic University, said she learned about sex in her high school but mainly about abortion.

“My school arranged some sex education, but they just pointed out the risks of having an abortion. They make us afraid of having an abortion, but they don’t talk to us about how to prevent it,” she said.

To address the low awareness among Indonesian teenagers of HIV/AIDS — just 14.3 percent, according to a Central Statistics Bureau survey in 2010 — National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh said the ministry intended to begin HIV/AIDS education for school students.

However, he dodged a question about whether the lessons would include condom use.

Irwandi said schools and universities should take more proactive roles in providing honest and open information about sex and reproduction, because other media would not hesitate to bombard children with information about sex, complete with more interesting graphics and audio, without considering the risks it posed.

If not from unfiltered media, children would learn from their peers, who often hardly know any better, he said.

When should children be taught? For psychology major Edward Samuel, 19, it should be sooner rather than later.

“For me, my first sex education was in junior high school, and I think that’s very, very late,” he said.

“It would be better if they started it in kindergarten or elementary school. I think it’s too late if they get it in junior high school.”

Indonesian Teachers ‘Encouraged’ to Educate Students About Sex

Jakarta Globe, Nurfika Osman | December 01, 2010

Jakarta. Sex education will be “integrated” into Indonesian classrooms for the first time as the nation faces up to an increasing number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country, including a growing number of young women.

National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh said on Wednesday that the ministry intended planning to begin HIV/AIDS education for school students, whose knowledge of the dangers remained low.

He dodged a question regarding whether the lessons would include condom use.

“We are going to encourage teachers to teach their students about HIV/AIDS and how we can prevent it,” Nuh said. “We are not going to have a new subject on this matter, but this issue will be integrated into biology classes, sports classes, religion classes and sociology classes.”

Based on a Central Statistics Bureau survey in 2010, only 14.3 percent of Indonesians aged 15-24 were knowledgeable about the disease, well below the 70 percent target needed for Indonesia to achieve its Millennium Development Goals.

Nuh said that the ministry also planned to train teachers so they each had comprehensive knowledge about AIDS.

“We are planning to have training of trainers for teachers so that this is going to run effectively,” he said.

The Ministry of National Education is this year responsible for raising AIDS awareness. It has about 200 campaigns in place.

In October, Nuh launched a sex education initiative for blind and deaf children but he has previously been criticized for rejecting a proposal to include sex education in the curriculum of state schools.

In 1989, women accounted for just 2.5 percent of all people living with HIV/AIDS in the country, according to the National Commission on AIDS (KPAN). By 2009, however, they made up 25.5 percent of cases. And this number is likely to increase further as gender-based violence continues to rise.

The commission predicts HIV prevalence among Indonesians aged 15 to 49 will increase to 0.37 percent in 2014 from 0.22 percent in 2008, while the number of people with HIV/AIDS will increase to 541,700 in 2014 from 371,800 in 2010.

Nafsiah Mboi, the secretary of the commission, told the Jakarta Globe on Wednesday that the target was “too ambitious” but if the government and civil society groups worked together a 50 percent figure could be achieved by next year.

She said students should be more familiar with condoms and the use of condoms.

“Condoms shouldn’t be a taboo.”

Young slum dwellers dislike using condom

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Thu, 04/22/2010 11:24 AM

The lack of information and knowledge about contraceptives has contributed to the common practice of unsafe sex among sexually active youth who live in poverty in Jakarta.

Many people who live in poverty have been said to believe that condom use decreases the experience of sexual activity.

Iqbal, 30, of Kampung Sepatan in Rorotan subdistrict, Cilincing, North Jakarta, said recently that many of the youth in the neighborhood had been in sexual relations and thought condom use could reduce a couple’s intimacy.

Kampung Sepatan is one of the urban slums in Jakarta and home to around 1,400 lower-income residents, many whose livelihood’s depend on trash picking, farming and fishing.

“Using a condom while having sex is not enjoyable,” Iqbal stated.

It was said that while young people there were aware of the dangers of practicing unsafe sex, there was a social propensity among them that championed unsafe sex as a way to cement a relationship.

“My ex-girlfriend insisted that we did not use condoms to hold me responsible if she became preg-nant,” Iqbal’s friend told the The Jakarta Post on condition of anonymity, adding that using condoms in a relationship also symbolized a lack of trust.

Sex education among the youth in the neighborhood appears to lack.

Reportedly many NGOs visiting the area are focused on providing young residents with more assistance with food, clothing and vocational training.

“No NGOs that have visited have provided sex education,” Adi, 20, said.

He said they received sex education from their schools in biology class, which consisted of information about their reproductive organs and function.

Similar to their counterparts in Kampung Sepatan, the young people living along Ciliwung riverbank of Bukit Duri and Kampung Pulo subdistricts, South Jakarta, also agreed that unprotected sex was a strategy to find love.

A young woman said, “I’d rather have sex without using condoms because it’s a symbol of intimacy and trust”.

Unprotected sex is a way in which a woman can ensure her boyfriend remains loyal, she said.

Zaky, 19, told the Post that they had better more informed and became aware of the dangers of unprotected sex after several NGOs recently visited their area to educate them about sex.

However, NGOs did not discuss the importance of using condoms, despite the fact that many young people there were sexually active.

“The NGOs explained the dangers of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections [STIs], but not about contraception in detail,” Zaky said.

The Lamp Science Foundation (YPI), a grassroot organization active in promoting the awareness on HIV/AIDS, confirmed that its approaches to young people in lower-income urban areas had been proactive in educating them about reproductive health, STIs and HIV/AIDS prevention.

“We highlighted condom use as one way to reduce the risk of HIV infection,” YPI secretary Srisulistyurini said.

She said that premarital and unsafe sex was prevalent among the youth in shanty areas, and that sex education was the key to curbing the rapid spread of STIs and HIV/AIDS.

The YPI suggested that communities of slum areas in Jakarta should initiate workshops on sex education by requesting NGOs such as the YPI to visit their areas.

“It needs comprehensive participation from society because many NGOs don’t have the resources to map all the slum areas in the city whose young residents need sex education,” Srisulistyurini said.

According to the health agency, 3,863 AIDS cases were reported in 2009, with women and young people being the most prone to infection. (tsy)

Myth of the virginal membrane still widespread

Radio Netherlands Worldwide, 3 April 2010 - 9:00am, by Zainab Hammoud

More than half of all girls and women do not bleed when they lose their virginity. However, this loss of blood is still important in cultures where women are supposed to preserve their virginity until marriage. So women have found ways of meeting their environment's expectations.

Karima, a Dutch/Moroccan woman in her early twenties, has a secret: she had hymenoplasty, or hymen reconstruction surgery, shortly before her marriage. The hymen is the membrane which encloses the vaginal area.

"In my culture you cannot tell your parents or your family that you were not a virgin when you married. My mother would not survive it," she says. She only allows herself to be interviewed with a distorted face and voice so that she cannot be recognised.

Gynaecologist Ineke van Seumeren has doubts about the procedure. "I have always found it a problem to do something that really isn't necessary. It is not a disease." A few years ago she thought up a different solution. She wants to inform people that the correlation between an intact hymen and virginity is a myth.

Five-day limit for post-sex pill

The contraceptive is available only on prescription

A recently licensed type of emergency contraception may offer women protection from pregnancy even when taken five days after sex.

Scottish researchers found that ulipristal acetate worked well after the three-day limit of the most commonly used drug, levonorgestrel.

At present ulipristal - unlike levonorgestrel - is only available with a prescription.

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service welcomed the study.

Emergency contraception uses hormones to either prevent the release of an egg by the ovary in the hours after sex, or stop it implanting into the the womb.

Levonorgestrel is available from pharmacies, either with a prescription, or sold directly to over-16s.

A study by specialists working for NHS Lothian tested the effectiveness of levonorgestrel and ulipristal (which was licensed for use last year) using a sample of more than 1,600 women from the UK, Ireland and the USA.

A total of 2.6% of the levonorgestrel group became pregnant despite taking the drug, compared with 1.8% in the ulipristal group.

In a much smaller group of women who received emergency contraception more than three days after sex, there were no pregnancies among women who had taken ulipristal compared with three pregnancies among those taking levonorgestrel.

The levels of side effects were roughly the same in both two drugs.

'Time window'

However, researchers said that the newer drug cannot be sold 'over-the-counter' at pharmacies because it did not yet have the established safety record of levonorgestrel.

Ann Furedi, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service described the new type of drug as "exciting news".

She said: "It offers a longer time window for use than the traditional, emergency contraception pill.

"Different hormones are involved to the ones traditionally used in contraception, so it may be that these will prove to have other contraceptive uses in future.

"However, accessibility is key to the uptake of any time-sensitive medication and since this pill is not currently available over-the-counter and is significantly more expensive to buy than the traditional 'morning after pill', it may be that many women who could benefit from it are not able to access it."

Most Indonesians’ Sex Lives Leave Them Yawning: Survey

The Jakarta Globe, Emmy Fitri

Size may not matter to most Indonesian women, but about 77 percent of them say their sex lives are not fulfilling.

According to the results of the Asia Pacific Sexual Health and Overall Wellness survey released on Tuesday, the percentage of Indonesian women complaining of an unsatisfactory sex life exceeds the 64 percent of Indonesian men who feel similarly.

Interestingly, the national figures are higher than the regional average, with 64 percent of women and 57 percent of men finding no satisfaction in their sexual lives, said Andini Suhardi, marketing manager of PT Pfizer Indonesia, which backed the study.

“More than half of our correspondents answered that sex is ‘very important,’ as though it was a staple in life,” she said. “Still, for women, sexual satisfaction is not always about having an orgasm. It also relates to love, affection and romance. Quality sex is one of the keys to keep the sparks alive among married couples, according to women.”

The survey, questioning a total of 3,957 people in 13 countries last year, revealed that dissatisfaction with sex was due to various problems, including erectile dysfunction. The study included a total of 578 respondents in Indonesia, comprising 328 men and 250 women, aged 24 to 74, who all said they were sexually active.

“Work loads, smoking habits and lack of exercise may decrease men’s sexual performance,” Andini said.

Wimpie Pangkahila, chairman of the Indonesian Association of Sexology (IAS) said erectile dysfunction was common among men in the country, but not many were willing to seek treatment, citing pride and lack of knowledge as reasons for the condition.

Based on various studies and data from his clinics in Denpasar, about 15 percent to 20 percent of married men suffered from erectile dysfunction.

“It’s just an estimate, but I suspect the number is increasing since erectile dysfunction is closely related to other health problems. Today’s lifestyle is the greatest contributor to the increase,” Wimpie said.

The disorder is defined as an inability of men to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse, and is said to be caused by both physical and psychological factors. An estimated 90 percent of cases that Wimpie knew of stemmed from physical problems like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, excessive alcohol consumption or anemia. Purely psychological problems such depression may also cause the condition.

He said the disorder was treatable as long as the primary causes were addressed.

“If a man has erectile dysfunction, we will have to check if he has hypertension or diabetes or other diseases. What needs to be cured first is the disease.”
