“…… Should I use Doctors and Drugs to Heal Me or Spiritual Methods?

"Dear Kryon, I have heard that you should stay natural and not use the science on the planet for healing. It does not honor God to go to a doctor. After all, don't you say that we can heal with our minds? So why should we ever go to a doctor if we can do it ourselves? Not only that, my doctor isn't enlightened, so he has no idea about my innate or my spiritual body needs. What should I do?"

First, Human Being, why do you wish to put so many things in boxes? You continue to want a yes and no answer for complex situations due to your 3D, linear outlook on almost everything. Learn to think out of the 3D box! Look at the heading of this section [above]. It asks which one should you do. It already assumes you can't do both because they seem dichotomous.

Let's use some spiritual logic: Here is a hypothetical answer, "Don't go to a doctor, for you can heal everything with your mind." So now I will ask: How many of you can do that in this room right now? How many readers can do that with efficiency right now? All of you are old souls, but are you really ready to do that? Do you know how? Do you have really good results with it? Can you rid disease and chemical imbalance with your mind right now?

I'm going to give you a truth, whether you choose to see it or not. You're not ready for that! You are not yet prepared to take on the task of full healing using your spiritual tools. Lemurians could do that, because Pleiadians taught them how! It's one of the promises of God, that there'll come a day when your DNA works that efficiently and you will be able to walk away from drug chemistry and the medical industry forever, for you'll have the creator's energy working at 100 percent, something you saw within the great masters who walked the earth.

This will be possible within the ascended earth that you are looking forward to, dear one. Have you seen the news lately? Look out the window. Is that where you are now? We are telling you that the energy is going in that direction, but you are not there yet.

Let those who feel that they can heal themselves begin the process of learning how. Many will be appreciative of the fact that you have some of the gifts for this now. Let the process begin, but don't think for a moment that you have arrived at a place where every health issue can be healed with your own power. You are students of a grand process that eventually will be yours if you wish to begin the quantum process of talking to your cells. Some will be good at this, and some will just be planting the seeds of it.

Now, I would like to tell you how Spirit works and the potentials of what's going to happen in the next few years. We're going to give the doctors of the planet new inventions and new science. These will be major discoveries about the Human body and of the quantum attributes therein.

Look at what has already happened, for some of this science has already been given to you and you are actually using it. Imagine a science that would allow the heart to be transplanted because the one you have is failing. Of course! It's an operation done many times a month on this planet. That information came from the creator, did you realize that? It didn't drop off the shelf of some dark energy library to be used in evil ways.

So, if you need a new heart, Lightworker, should you go to the doctor or create one with your mind? Until you feel comfortable that you can replace your heart with a new one by yourself, then you might consider using the God-given information that is in the hands of the surgeon. For it will save your life, and create a situation where you stay and continue to send your light to the earth! Do you see what we're saying?

You can also alter that which is medicine [drugs] and begin a process that is spectacular in its design, but not very 3D. I challenge you to begin to use what I would call the homeopathic principle with major drugs. If some of you are taking major drugs in order to alter your chemistry so that you can live better and longer, you might feel you have no choice. "Well, this is keeping me alive," you might say. "I don't yet have the ability to do this with my consciousness, so I take the drugs."

In this new energy, there is something else that you can try if you are in this category. Do the following with safety, intelligence, common sense and logic. Here is the challenge: The principle of homeopathy is that an almost invisible tincture of a substance is ingested and is seen by your innate. Innate "sees" what you are trying to do and then adjusts the body's chemistry in response. Therefore, you might say that you are sending the body a "signal for balance." The actual tincture is not large enough to affect anything chemically - yet it works!

The body [innate] sees what you're trying to do and then cooperates. In a sense, you might say the body is healing itself because you were able to give it instructions through the homeopathic substance of what to do. So, why not do it with a major drug? Start reducing the dosage and start talking to your cells, and see what happens. If you're not successful, then stop the reduction. However, to your own amazement, you may often be successful over time.

You might be able to take the dosage that you're used to and cut it to at least a quarter of what it was. It is the homeopathy principle and it allows you to keep the purpose of the drug, but reduce it to a fraction of a common 3D dosage. You're still taking it internally, but now it's also signaling in addition to working chemically. The signal is sent, the body cooperates, and you reduce the chance of side effects.

You can't put things in boxes of yes or no when it comes to the grand system of Spirit. You can instead use spiritual logic and see the things that God has given you on the planet within the inventions and processes. Have an operation, save your life, and stand and say, "Thank you, God, for this and for my being born where these things are possible." It's a complicated subject, is it not? Each of you is so different! You'll know what to do, dear one. Never stress over that decision, because your innate will tell you what is appropriate for you if you're willing to listen. ….”

A shipment of cadaver skin donated by the Euro Tissue Bank in Amsterdam was expected to arrive in Taiwan late Friday to help Taiwan treat people who suffered severe burns in the fire at a New Taipei water park on June 27.

Ger Kropman, manager of the skin bank, decided to make the donation and contacted Taiwan's representative office in the Netherlands after learning of the tragedy on CNN, according to De Telegraaf, the country's biggest daily morning newspaper.

Because the burns patients are at growing risk of developing infections in the coming days, the shipment must get to Taiwan as soon as possible to help save their lives, Kropman was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Tom Chou, Taiwan's representative to the Netherlands, paid a visit to the skin bank Thursday to thank the facility for its kind donation on behalf of Taiwan's government.

Of the 495 people injured when colored cornstarch powder ignited into a fireball at a Color Play Asia party held at the Formosa Fun Coast water park in New Taipei, two have died and 211 are in critical condition, according to figures released by Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare on Friday.

The number of people reported in critical condition was 27 higher than reported Thursday evening.

A total of 449 victims remain hospitalized, of whom 255 are being treated in intensive care units, the ministry said.

An 8 centimeter nail pierced the eye of a man in Nanjing and became lodged in his head, fortunately missing all the major blood vessels in the brain, reports the People's Daily.

The accident occurred when the man, surnamed Yang, from Hebei, was refurnishing the floor of his home toward the end of last month. He felt something in his left eye and heard a noise as he was cutting material for the floor. He noticed a little blood, but as he was not in much pain he did not give the irritation much notice.

The next morning he woke up with a serious headache and found his eye had swollen up. On going to a hospital, he was told by doctors that he had a nail stuck in his eye. The nail was 8cm long, and had entered Yang's head past the side of the eyeball.

"The nail missed all the important vessels and nerves and there is no bleeding in the brain. This is rare. The patient is very lucky," said his doctor, who added that the nail flew into Yang's eye at high speed.

The doctor removed the nail in a four-hour operation.

To Heaven And Back (+Video) : Near-death experience during Kayak trip

The Huffington Post, Mary C. Neal06/09/2012
M.D.Orthopaedic surgeon; Author, 'To Heaven and Back'

One lesson I learned after I drowned on a South American river was that to face life's challenges with gratitude and joy, a person must first lose his or her faith.

I am an experienced kayaker, but when I crested the top of a moderate waterfall while kayaking the Fuy River, I saw no clean exit to the tremendous turbulence at its bottom. I pragmatically assumed I would tip over at the bottom, then exit my boat and be briefly tossed about in the turbulence before surfacing and swimming downstream.

When my boat struck the bottom with a thud, I was immediately submerged. As a spine surgeon, I am familiar and comfortable with stressful situations. I remained calm as I sequentially went through the steps to extricate myself: detaching my spray skirt (neoprene fabric that keeps water out of the boat by stretching between the kayaker's waist and the boat's cockpit rim), pushing myself out of the boat with my feet, and trying to free the boat by rocking back and forth. I had no air, was too far from shore for anyone to reach me and my self-rescue was prevented by the flowing water flattening my torso against the front deck of my boat. After a lifetime of fearing a drowning death, the irony of my predicament almost made me chuckle.

Like 92 percent of Americans at that time, I believed in God. I attended Sunday school as a child and accepted Christ as my savior as a teenager. My moderate faith in religious truths easily faded into the background of my busy life when I left for college, but I called to God on the river, asking only that His will be done.

I was immediately overcome with a physical sensation of being held, comforted, and reassured that everything would be fine regardless of whether I lived or died. I was presented with a short review of my life, emphasizing the unseen ripple effects of particular events rather than the event itself. The scientific, analytical and skeptical part of my brain observed this with interest and curiosity. I was acutely aware of my situation; I knew I had been underwater too long to be alive but also knew that this experience did not have the quality of a dream or hallucination, was not the result of a dying brain and could not have been created by my limited imagination.

My legs bent backward on themselves as the current slowly pulled my body downstream over the front deck of my boat but I felt no pain as they were breaking. My spirit peeled away from my discarded body and as I rose up and out of the river, I was joyously greeted by a group of old friends. I watched my body be pulled to the riverbank and as CPR was initiated, I was guided down a path to a domed building that not only exuded a brilliance of color and beauty, but also exploded with the pure, complete and unconditional love of God. I felt like I was finally home. Despite my protests, I was eventually returned to my body with words of encouragement and instruction regarding my future.

When Kids Came To Visit
I was hospitalized for many weeks after my drowning, underwent many surgeries on my broken legs and suffered the losses of both my father and stepfather. I struggled to reconcile my understanding of medical science with the reality of my experience. I analyzed the experiences, reviewed my medical records and corroborated events with others. I listened to the stories of my patients who cautiously asked to share with me their own experience of Godly intervention. I struggled with the instructions I had been given, especially as they related to the future death of my son.

I lost my faith; it was transformed into a complete trust in the promises of God. This changed me as a person and as a doctor. Trusting that God loves us unconditionally, that spiritual life is eternal and that He as a beautiful plan for each of us, allowed me to face struggles with gratitude and joy. Each event, neither good nor bad, is like a small thread woven together with others to create a glorious tapestry of God's design. I do not fear death. I am more tolerant of other people's actions. I observe the world with an open heart.

I have not discarded the truth of scientific discovery nor discount its value to society, but the boundaries between God and medicine have been forever shattered. I pray for my patients. I help them perceive a beautiful opportunity for growth in an otherwise dire situation.

Spiritual curiosity while experiencing the presence of God in one's life transforms faith into the trust that provides confidence to face life's most difficult challenges with gratitude and joy.

Question: Dear Kryon, I have read several accounts of people who had "died" and then returned to their bodies. In some of the accounts, they describe a very dismal place for those who committed suicide. Usually, they say that those who committed suicide are "stuck" there. Are these accounts true, or is this colored by the person's personal belief? What about those who don't commit suicide because they are depressed and can't continue on, but who "die in their cause", such as the terrorists who blew up the Twin towers or the suicide bombers in Israel? Or those who chose to take their lives because they have cancer and the pain becomes too much for them?

Answer: Dear one, as we have mentioned before, the energy of suicide is a test for those who remain, not for the one who committed the act. Indeed, the Human Being has very strong survival instincts to keep him from doing this, but for those who do, there is no stigma of dishonor or punishment. They are not stuck, either. Most of the time this was a potential contract all along, and it prods those around them to make decisions that they would never have had to do otherwise.

Remember, this is a test for all of you. When it's over, don't be shocked to return to this side of the veil and find that there is no punishment or reward… only a family who is appreciative of your journey, and of the energy it took to love the earth and the Universe so much, that you went through it.

(from Lee) Kryon has explained near death experiences. You can read it at: [http://www.kryon.com/k_chanelphilly.html] Also, Kryon has mentioned death many times, and about how it relates to us. “.. For centuries you haven't been able to think past that box of what God must be like. So you create a Human-like God with wars in heaven, angel strife, things that would explain the devil, fallen angels, pearly gates, lists of dos and don'ts, and many rules still based on cultures that are centuries old. You create golden streets and even sexual pleasures as rewards for men (of course) - all Human perspective, pasted upon God. I want to tell you that it's a lot different than that. I want to remind you that there are those who have seen it! Why don't you ask somebody who has had what you would call a near-death experience?

When a Human almost dies, they get close to the veil, very close. They are ever so close to the creator's energy and just barely touched by it. When their heart was stopping and their breathing was almost gone, before they were brought back to life with science, they got to touch the hand of God for just an instant. What they saw was magnificent! The energy before them was filled with love and light, filled with family, filled with beauty. There was no strife there. There was no punishment there or even the hint of it. And when they came back from that experience, listen to what they told you. It changed their lives, didn't it? Listen to each one talk about it, for they continued to say, "There is nothing to fear and death is something you experience as a normal transition." Blessed is the Human Being who experiences both death and birth and has the wisdom to report, "Oh, it's uncomfortable, but I'll get through it, because I've done it before." The person who has experienced a near-death experience is no longer afraid to die! What does that tell you? They have seen what is there and they embrace it! …”

After 58 hours of emergency medical attention, Zhang Lili, a teacher who nearly died saving two students, has finally regained consciousness, the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University announced on May 15.

"But it cannot be ruled out that her condition may worsen, and the doctors are still working full out to save the heroic teacher," said Zhao Mingyan, ICU director at the hospital, where Zhang is now receiving treatment.

Zhang Lili, 29, a Chinese language teacher at No 19 Middle School of Jiamusi, Northeast China's Heilongjiang province, was run over by a school bus after pushing two students out of the way on May 8.

After news of her actions spread, people began to call her "the most beautiful teacher in China".

Donations to Zhang's family from schools, companies, society organizations and organs of government have been pouring in.

Heilongjiang Welfare Lottery Center sent 100,000 yuan ($15,850) to Zhang's family on May 14.

"Her courage moved all of our staff, and we will try our best to help the brave teacher in her future life. After her recovery, we hope she can be the ambassador of the welfare lottery," said Wang Jianwei, the director of center.

A woman told CCTV that Zhang donated 100 yuan each month to her son from her meagre salary.

The provincial Women's Federation on Monday honored Zhang with the title "Excellent Female Worker".

The Ministry of Education has also named her "National Outstanding Teacher" and called on the country's educators to learn from her.

When LPG blasts ruin futures

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Tue, 08/03/2010 11:48 AM

A main factor behind the success of the government’s kerosene-to-gas-conversion program in 2007 was that citizens were given no alternative but to follow the policy.

Many of those people have now become victims of the government’s failure to oversee the implementation of regulations designed to ensure their safety in using subsidized 3-kilogram Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) canisters.

Those victims will bear their wounds for the rest of their lives, and their futures may suffer as a result.

Zaenuddin, 20, and his uncle Kasran, a 40-year-old porridge vendor, are among those who are now scarred for life. They were injured when an LPG canister exploded in their densely populated settlement in Tanjung Duren area, West Jakarta, along with eight other people, most of them porridge vendors.

A newly employed storehouse guard for a private company in North Jakarta, Zaenuddin, shared his story while laying on a bed at Sumber Waras Hospital in West Jakarta.

Zaenuddin’s body is 30 percent covered in burns and he is now afraid that he will lose his job.

“It is difficult to find a job now, I don’t want to loose this one because of my appearance,” he said, adding that he hoped the company would allow him to continue to work for them even though he had been absent for many days.

Zaenuddin spent a night at his uncle’s house on Jl. Tanjung Duren, when the tragic moment arrived on July 25.

“I decided to stay with my uncle, I wanted to share the good news about my job,” he said.

But the good news was short-lived as hours later Zaenuddin was in a dire state, with severe burns on his face, hands and legs.

“I haven’t recovered from the trauma, there’s something about the gas canisters that scare me off,” he said.

Zaenuddin was asleep when Kasran began preparing porridge at 3 a.m. Kasran removed the seal on a 3-kilogram gas canister, only for freezing-cold gas to start spraying out at tremendous velocity.

One of Kasran’s neighbors was cooking food on an open flame not far away. The spewing gas was ignited, producing an explosion and a fire that injured 10 people in the vicinity.

“I thought I was going to die,” Zaenuddin said.

He managed to run out of Kasran’s house and help his uncle escape from the fire.

Lying next to Zaenuddin at the hospital was Kasran, now barely able to speak due to the severeness of the burns on his face.

“He can barely breath. It is painful for him to talk,” said his sister in law, Maesaroh.

Maesaroh, 40, said the father of two had been the family’s breadwinner.

“His wife suffered a heart disease, we tried not to tell her about Kasran’s terrible condition,” she said.

With Kasran now hospitalized, no one is taking care of his family.

“I really hope our President can help the family,” she said.

Of the 10 victims, only two had been discharged from hospital. State oil and gas company Pertamina covered all of the victim’s medical costs.

Most suffered burns to about 30 percent of their bodies, but half of Kasran’s body was burned. Kasran must stay in hospital for another three weeks.

The Center for Public Interest Studies recorded that as of July 8, 2010, the number of gas explosion victims had reached 189 people, including dead and injured.

Gas Blast Victim Ridho Finally Gets Treatment After Appeal to President

Jakarta Globe, Camelia Pasandaran, July 21, 2010

Jakarta.Susi Haryani is no longer crying.

The unemployed mother of 4-year-old Ridho is elated that her son, disfigured in March by a gas cylinder explosion in Bojonegoro, East Java, is finally receiving the treatment he needs.

Susi made headlines after she and her son tried unsuccessfully on Monday to meet the president at the State Palace to ask for help in getting further treatment.

The explosion that maimed Ridho happened in a rented room they were sharing. Susi had started cooking when a gas leak caused the blast and severely burned her son.

The East Java government provided treatment for the burns, but Susi said her son now needed plastic surgery to rebuild his face. Her desperation at having no money to pay for it drove her to try to seek help directly from the president.

Instead, she and her son were taken in a presidential car to state energy firm PT Pertamina’s offices, where it was arranged for Ridho to be treated at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.

“Ridho is now in the special burn unit,” Susi told the Jakarta Globe. “I will stay here until he has recovered.

“If the doctors ask my son to stay, then I will stay to accompany him. If they want my son to be an outpatient, I will just obey what they say.”

Her story was reported widely on Tuesday, prompting many organizations and individuals to offer to finance her son’s surgery. But Susi said she would not take any money offered.

“I want them to just give it to the hospital,” she said. “I don’t want to hold the money myself, or else people may say I was only looking for money. So please, those who offered help, just give it to the hospital directly.”

Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said the palace had not turned Susi away when she came to seek the president’s help.

“There was no rejection, not at all,” Julian said.

“I think there is a misperception and miscommunication here. I talked to Pertamina, telling them that this victim had come to Jakarta and was now at the palace. I asked the palace staff to prepare a car and they took them to Pertamina’s offices.”

Julian said the palace also had coordinated with the Health Ministry over the treatment needed.

Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, speaking after visiting Ridho and his mother at the hospital, said: “We will bear all the costs,” referring to the government and Pertamina. She gave no estimates.

Julian said it was the right of every citizen to come to the palace, but the primary responsibility to deal with victims lay with local authorities.

“Because the victims are from East Java, the ones who should handle it are the local government in coordination with the local oil and gas authority, so they should not directly come here,” he said.

“It is our concern, and the president expresses his deepest sympathy to the victims and has already asked the health minister to coordinate with Pertamina in handling the case.”

Julian also said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wanted all victims of gas canister explosions to be treated well.

There have been scores of explosions blamed on leaks from faulty parts on stoves using three-kilogram gas canisters.

Millions of the stoves have been distributed since 2006 under a program to reduce fuel subsidies by swapping kerosene for cheaper liquefied petroleum gas.

Toddler improving after tiger attack

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Tue, 06/29/2010 2:22 PM

A holiday turned sour for 3-year-old girl Angelica Rosa after she was mauled her Monday by a tiger bred at the Indonesia Safari Park in Prigen in the neighboring East Java town of Pasuruan.

She is undergoing treatment at Lavalette Hospital in Malang.

Hospital director Arif Wijanto said Angelica had undergone plastic surgery shortly after she was transferred from Panca Darma Hospital in Pasuruan on Monday night.

“The patient’s condition continues improving and she is able to communicate. But she cannot eat and drink independently yet due to facial injuries,” Arif said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Angelica and her parents were walking past a section inside the park when the 10-month Bengala tiger leapt onto and mauled her, according to the park’s spokeswoman Tisa.

“The tiger broke free from its handlers who quickly regained control of the animal following the attack,” Tisa said.

She added that park management would cover medical costs that Angelica, a resident of Genduk Indak housing complex in Semarang, Central Java, requires.

The accident took place on Sunday in a remote village in Aceh province, district head Ibnu Hasyim said.

“There were about 37 kids gathered together on a wire-cable suspension bridge when it collapsed and they fell into a river,” he said.

Twenty-five children were rescued with minor injuries but 12 others, all below the age of 12, were swept away in the strong currents.

The children were watching a ritual ceremony to dispel misfortune after a measles outbreak in the area.

“The adults were throwing offerings in the form of chickens into the river” when the bridge collapsed, the official said.

Swedish Tourist Falls Into Bali's Mount Batur Crater

A man died after falling from the parking area on the fourth floor of a shopping mall in Solo, Central Java, on Monday.

Agus Sunarto, 32, died after he fell from the parking area at Solo Grand Mall at 2 p.m. The incident shocked mall patrons, however the chronology of the incident is still unclear.

Agus’ friend, Ibnu Setiyo, who accompanied Agus and his wife, Ida, to the mall, told Metro TV that Agus was there to buy school supplies for his child. After shopping, they walked to the parking area on the fourth floor.

However, Agus asked Ibnu and Ida to go wait for him in the car because he wanted to finish his drink. According to Ibnu, Agus was drinking a bottled ice tea.

Ida started to worry when her husband did not show up and went to look for him. Some time later, she came running to the car and told Ibnu that Agus had fallen.

They went downstairs and found Agus’s body.

“He was normal, there was nothing unusual about him. He did not seem to have any problems with his wife either,” Ibnu told Metro TV.

Solo Police are still investigating whether the death was the result of an accident or a suicide. Police processed the crime scene and took the body to the hospital for an autopsy. Ibnu and Ida were taken to the police station for questioning.

Medan authorities may close nightclub for failing safety standards

Apriadi Gunawan, The Jakarta Post, Medan | Sun, 12/06/2009 6:15 PM

Medan authorities may close popular entertainment center M City for having unacceptably low safety standards, following the deaths of 20 people who were killed when a fire gutted the nightclub Friday.

Speaking on Sunday, Rahudman Harahap from the Medan mayor’s office said, based on an investigation by his office, the nightclub did not have standard safety equipment such as emergency ladders and nozzle sprinklers.

“Because of such low standards, many visitors were trapped and killed in the incident,” Rahudman said.

He added his office would look into allegations the nightclub did not even have an official business permit.

“There could be other entertainment clubs which do not meet safety standard. If that’s true, we will revoke their business permits,” he said.

The Medan police have named three people suspects in the fatal incident.

The police suspected the fire broke out when one of the suspects attempted to cut a carpet with a cigarette lighter, accidentally setting it on fire.

The suspects face a maximum penalty of five years in prison if convicted of committing a negligent act leading to death or injury, the police said.

Death toll from nightclub fire rises to 15

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 12/04/2009 11:52 PM

At least 15 people have died in a fire that gutted popular nightclub M City in the North Sumatra capital of Medan on Friday night.

As of 11 p.m. local time, rescue workers were struggling to find more people feared trapped in the building, particularly on the third and fourth floors, news portal kompas.com reported.

The head of the city’s fire brigade, Vukko Redward W. Bakkara, said most of the deaths were due to suffocation. He said his men faced difficulties extinguishing the fire on the third floor of the building, which was mostly made up of karaoke lounges, as most of the doors were tightly closed.

A total of 20 fire engines were deployed to douse the fire.

Three women were among the casualties. All the bodies were taken to Pirngadi State Hospital for identification.

Redward suspected faulty circuits caused the fatal blaze.

Ponari sweats over poor health services

Emmy Fitri, THE JAKARTA POST, JAKARTA | Wed, 02/25/2009 9:02 AM

A few months ago Ponari was just an ordinary boy from Jombang, a small town in East Java. He has since rose to stardom and is having his moment in the sun, catching media headlines with his “power” to heal any illness with the help of a magic stone, obtained after being struck by lightning.

Tens of thousands of people from across the region have flocked in throngs to his house with their sick loved ones on a daily basis in the hope that Ponari’s water will heal them. Media reports have stated that 40,000 people gather near Ponari’s humble home to drink the magic water on a daily basis.

Four people, who were waiting in the harsh outdoors of a dirty alley, reportedly died among the commotion of the crowd. Recently, a toddler who was suffering from meningitis died a few days after drinking water from Ponari. Whether or not his death related to Ponari’s prescription remains unknown.

The whole mystery as to whether or not ailments can be cured by drinking the water, which Ponari has dipped the stone in, linger, as nothing has been done to ascertain the properties of the rock.

Ponari’s sudden fame adds another interesting chapter to the history of this small town. It may not spark a nation-wide uproar, but this seemingly insignificant matter reveals a hidden, chronic problem that this country has long been suffering from and which leaders have tried to keep it under the rug.

Spiritual healing and alternative medicines have long been part of this country’s culture. Some are just beyond belief that rationality cannot match. Despite the robustness of organized religions, Indonesian’s are still deeply attached to the animist traditions inherited from their ancestors. Java, for instance, abounds with religious rituals blended with strong animism beliefs. The concept of musyrik in Islam clearly means that any attempt to ally to anything other than God’s power is sinful.

But on a talk back show on a private radio station a listener preached otherwise: “It is not musyrik. God works mysteriously. Ponari is clearly getting the power from God so whoever doesn’t believe Ponari, he or she simply doesn’t believe God.”

Point taken — commanding people to ignore such practices is futile because people will always manage to link such power with their faith.

Many have felt the windfall from the operation of Ponari Family Inc.; neighbors sell food and water and petty officials can make further revenue. It’s a newfound business opportunity for many, producing instant cash.

But what’s the good of it all? The striking irony is that Ponari — and perhaps other shamans — uses unfiltered water to heal his patients. Believe it or not, whatever power is in the water, it is still raw, dirty water and needs to be boiled before it is safe for consumption. That’s a simple fact that even elementary school students know, but it’s been turned upside down.

People overlook the basic knowledge of public health simply because they believe Ponari posses supreme power.

Amid a backdrop of debilitating economic conditions and distrust of leaders, people are reeling from ongoing hardships to practices that lure them with instant medicines based on mumbo-jumbo.

One possible reason is that leaders don’t walk the walk. No amount of good will better the lives of the people, concrete action must be taken. Basic rights and necessities that people must get in return are not fully delivered. Proper education and health services have yet to be put in place in this East Java town, like so many others.

Public health services that are supposed to be within reach — both in terms of location and affordability —remain elusive. The infrastructure may be there but service depends on what’s in ones wallet. The popularity of Ponari and other young shamans sheds light on this fact.

Thus, it’s either that people have lost their faith in public health services or that people simply have given up hope in the government.

Debate continues as to how to handle Ponari. There are two opposing camps: Shut him down, or allow him to continue under some restrictions. But is he really the problem? Ponari, at such a tender age, has become a hero for many, but he has been robbed. His rights as a child have been taken away. He has been given no time to develop as a child.

Wouldn’t it be wiser for doctors and researchers to set up a study — a real one — to dig deep into such practices and establish a clearer perspective as to why this oddness still happens and why people turn away from modern health services? Rather than appearing on television giving sound bites on this phenomenon they should offer real, lasting solutions. Taking what happened in Jombang and other places with an attitude of “it’s just one of many cases we’ve seen before” or “people will get tired of it soon” will only leave the problem to fester.

After Ponari, there are a few other children who claim to have a supernatural ability to cure the sick have been exposed by the media. If this continues we will see our public health service deserted. Public health services, an investment in a better, healthier generation, are about to collapse and what will come if that happens?
