Dutch lawyer starts criminal case against tobacco firms

A Dutch lawyer and lung cancer patient are planning to take tobacco companies to court for for producing cigarettes designed to turn people into addicts as quickly as possible. 

Lawyer Benedicte Ficq and cancer victim Anne Marie van Veen are putting together a criminal case against cigarette producers, arguing that out of court settlements do not go far enough.

‘I want to see tobacco firms prosecuted for deliberately damaging people’s health,’ Ficq told television programme RTL Late Night. 

Tobacco firms cannot hide behind the freedom of choice of people to smoke because they are deliberately influencing smokers’ behaviour, Ficq and Van Veen argue. 

Poison

‘To limit that freedom, addictive chemicals such as nicotine and other additives are put into cigarettes,’ they say. ‘And [the companies] overcome our natural aversion to poisons by adding substances like menthol.’ 

Nor does the argument that the government does not ban smoking hold water, Ficq said. ‘If I fed my children rat poison every day and they eventually die, I would be prosecuted for murder,’ she said. ‘The tobacco industry is simply getting away with it.’ 

Ficq and Van Veen are appealing for other people to sign up to their campaign.

“… The Shift in Human Nature

You're starting to see integrity change. Awareness recalibrates integrity, and the Human Being who would sit there and take advantage of another Human Being in an old energy would never do it in a new energy. The reason? It will become intuitive, so this is a shift in Human Nature as well, for in the past you have assumed that people take advantage of people first and integrity comes later. That's just ordinary Human nature.

In the past, Human nature expressed within governments worked like this: If you were stronger than the other one, you simply conquered them. If you were strong, it was an invitation to conquer. If you were weak, it was an invitation to be conquered. No one even thought about it. It was the way of things. The bigger you could have your armies, the better they would do when you sent them out to conquer. That's not how you think today. Did you notice?

Any country that thinks this way today will not survive, for humanity has discovered that the world goes far better by putting things together instead of tearing them apart. The new energy puts the weak and strong together in ways that make sense and that have integrity. Take a look at what happened to some of the businesses in this great land (USA). Up to 30 years ago, when you started realizing some of them didn't have integrity, you eliminated them. What happened to the tobacco companies when you realized they were knowingly addicting your children? Today, they still sell their products to less-aware countries, but that will also change.

What did you do a few years ago when you realized that your bankers were actually selling you homes that they knew you couldn't pay for later? They were walking away, smiling greedily, not thinking about the heartbreak that was to follow when a life's dream would be lost. Dear American, you are in a recession. However, this is like when you prune a tree and cut back the branches. When the tree grows back, you've got control and the branches will grow bigger and stronger than they were before, without the greed factor. Then, if you don't like the way it grows back, you'll prune it again! I tell you this because awareness is now in control of big money. It's right before your eyes, what you're doing. But fear often rules. 

The Next Ones to Fall

There's something potentially coming that you should know about, and I've reported it before two other times. But I want you to hear it again. What other very large industries don't have integrity, but also have a great deal of money? Prepare for the crumbling of big pharma in America. It is starting now and when the reports happen and the movie is created [smile], Americans will wake up to the fact that they have an enormously wealthy industry that keeps people sick for money.

Antibody shields monkeys from 'HIV' for months: study

Paris (AFP) - Just one shot of a lab-produced antibody protected macaques against a sort of monkey HIV for nearly six months, said a study Wednesday into a potential vaccine alternative.

Exposed to simian HIV (SHIV) once a week, non-treated monkeys contracted the virus after just three weeks on average, the researchers said, whereas the trial monkeys remained virus-free for up to 23 weeks.

In human populations at high risk of contracting the AIDS-causing virus, such protection, even temporary, "could have a profound impact on virus transmission," the team of German and US-based researchers reported in the journal Nature.

They had examined "passive immunisation" as an alternative to an HIV vaccine, which experts fear may still be years off.

A vaccine works by priming the body to respond with germ-fighting antibodies whenever a virus or bacteria invades. It is long-lasting, sometimes for life.

"Passive immunisation" involves the transfer of antibodies generated by one person directly to another to provide protection, which is shorter-lived.

Antibody shots were used to protect travellers against Hepatitis A until a vaccine became available in the 1990s, and some hope the technique could stave off millions of HIV infections until a vaccine comes to the market.

Transferred antibodies had previously been shown to protect animals against HIV-like viruses for a day or two, but never as long as in this study.

Proof of concept

Since the outbreak started in the early 1980s, about 71 million people have been infected by HIV, and some 34 million have died, according to UN estimates.

There is no cure, and the only way of dealing with HIV is lifelong reliance on antiretroviral drugs, invented in the 1990s, to stop the virus from replicating.

The treatment carries side effects and is costly.

The quest for a vaccine has been long and frustrating, in spite of hundreds of millions of dollars in funding.

Some of the focus has shifted to antibodies, but this too proved complicated as each HIV antibody tends to target a specific virus strain.

In recent years, researchers have discovered that about 10-30 percent of HIV-infected people have a naturally-present, "broadly-neutralising" (bNAb) type of antibody which targets several strains at once.

Three of these were tested in the new study.

Each delayed infection in macaque monkeys, said the team -- the first by up to 12 weeks, the second by 20 weeks, and the third by 23 weeks.

A single antibody shot "was protective against repeated low-dose SHIV infection for several months," the team wrote.

This served as "proof of concept" that periodic antibody shots may be useful as an alternative to vaccination, they said, though further research must confirm that the findings can be replicated in humans.

"When considered in the context of a potential exposure to HIV-1 in regions of the world where HIV-1 is endemic," wrote the team, such an infection barrier "could have a profound impact on virus transmission".

Dutch ‘horror’ dentist jailed for eight years in France, banned for life

A Dutch dentist who was extradited to France to face charges of mutilating patients has been jailed for eight years and banned from practising his profession for life. 

Mark van Nierop was charged with mutilating 120 patients without medical need between 2008 and 2012 at his practice in Chateau-Chinon. Van Nierop is said to have pulled healthy teeth, broken people’s jaws and left broken bits of equipment in patients’ gums. 

Van Nierop, 51, was tracked down in Canada in September 2014 and extradited to the Netherlands on an international arrest warrant. A Dutch court ruled then he could be sent to France for trial. 

The Dutch public prosecution department is currently investigating events at the practice he had in The Hague before moving to France, ANP said last month.

Gay couple wins custody of surrogate child Carmen in Thailand

A homosexual American-Spanish couple has won the right to keep their child, Carmen. Complications ensued after the girl's surrogate mother decided to keep the baby after realizing that the couple was gay.

Bangkok's Juvenile and Family Court ruled on Tuesday that US citizen Gordon Lake (pictured above, left) was Carmen's legal guardian, his lawyer, Rachapol Sirikulchit, told reporters.

"The court has granted legal custody of Carmen Lake to Gordon Lake, my client, and my client is her only guardian," the attorney said.

Lake's partner, Spaniard Manuel Santos (pictured above, right), was elated at the verdict. "We won," he told journalists, adding, "We are really happy… This nightmare is going to end soon."

Santos and Lake had been stuck in Thailand since January 2015, when Carmen was born. The two have been living off of finances from a crowdfunding website where they had appealed for help.

Lake is Carmen's biological father, while the egg came from an anonymous donor. After Carmen's birth, her surrogate mother Patidta Kusolsang gave the baby to Lake and Santos.

Manuel Santos and his partner have been stuck in Thailand for nearly 15 months

Although Carmen had been living with the couple since her birth, her surrogate mother changed her mind and did not sign the documents to enable Carmen to obtain a passport. The two men were told that Patidta did not know they were gay before handing over the child.

Lake's same-sex marriage with Santos became a problem in Thailand, which does not recognize homosexual unions. However, the 41-year-old American insisted the matter had been clear ever since they tied up with surrogacy agency New Life, which has branches in several countries.

This was further complicated by a ban on surrogacy in 2015 following a series of scandals involving foreign adoptions. However, the ban took effect only after Carmen was born.

In one high-profile case, an Australian couple was accused of abandoning a baby with Down's Syndrome, while taking away her twin back home with them. In another scandal, a Japanese man had 15 babies with surrogate mothers.

Drugs companies paid nearly €52m to doctors, hospitals last year Business

The pharmaceuticals industry spent nearly €52m sponsoring Dutch doctors and healthcare institutions last year, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

This is a rise of 36% on 2014, according to research by the healthcare transparency monitor Transparantieregister Zorg. 

Of this, €8.6m went to 3,814 doctors. Most doctors just did one sponsored job for the pharma firms, but the best paid picked up €127,000 for working for the industry. Patient groups picked up €2.2m. 

Most of the cash which went to care institutions was also spent on one-off projects although the biggest earner picked up €1.7m. In addition, one institution carried out 148 projects for drugs companies, the Volkskrant says. 

Openness

Doctors’ organisation KNMG told the Volkskrant it would look carefully at the figures but pointed out fewer than 7% of doctors actually earn money on the side from the pharmaceuticals industry. 

The sector’s own lobby group Nefarma said the amount of sponsorship money has gone up because openness about sponsorship has led to an increase in such arrangements. 

The names of the hospitals and doctors which earn money from the pharmaceuticals’ industry will be published in the register later on Monday. 

Chemotherapy for breast cancer not always necessary: Dutch researchers

Women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer often receive additional chemotherapy to prevent metastases but many of these women are undergoing a stressful therapy they may not need, according to researchers at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. 

The institute has developed a test which can be used to predict which women with hormone-sensitive early-stage breast cancer need additional chemotherapy and which do not. 

The MammaPrint test determines the activity of 70 genes in the tumour tissue. These results can be used to predict the personal risk for each patient of the tumour spreading elsewhere in the body. 

The results of a large European study involving 6,693 patients has provided ‘the final evidence of the test’s reliability’, the institute said on Monday. 

Low probability

This study showed that patients with hormone-sensitive breast cancer and who had been found to have a low probability of metastasis by the MammaPrint test, do not need chemotherapy. Previous minor studies have tentatively shown the same result.

 ‘In both groups the percentage of women remaining disease-free in the following years, remained the same, namely 95%,’ said Emiel Rutgers, a surgeon at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital, who coordinated the study. 

Every year 14,000 women in the Netherlands are diagnosed with breast cancer. Some 80% have hormone-sensitive breast cancer.

Let's talk more about biology because now it gets a little more complex. There is an intermingling of the 3D and the quantum that we wish to describe to you now. It's something that is new, for the vibration of this planet and of humanity, especially of those who are working with the light, is creating a new tool set. You're going to start to see it and it's going to be visible through examination of the 3D chemistry of DNA, even at the 3D level.

Science is now looking at what they call markers in the protein-encoded DNA, which creates the Human genes. These markers, as they are described by science, are those that are the pieces and parts that would indicate predispositions - attributes that might weaken certain cells so that later in life they would allow disease, such as cancer. They're starting to see these markers, perhaps in certain families where mothers and daughters and their daughters and their daughters all had the same kind of disease. They're starting to see the genetic markers that create predisposed weakness.

Let's talk about the markers, for this is the first time we have disclosed this. First the premise: For years we have told you that your intent to talk to your cellular structure has power. This intent is your communication to the DNA field to alter something within the 3D cellular structure. You might say it's your own interdimensional "voice" giving instructions to the quantum part of your DNA, which then results in the actual chemical changes that are occurring in the codes within your 3D genome. But now the results are going to be seen, and you can begin by removing the markers, and when you do, they stay removed. This means that something quantum you do today can change the chemistry of your gene-producing DNA so greatly that it will NOT be passed to your children. You can break the chain.

Blessed are the Human Beings who realize that as they purify their lives with the light of the Creator, it will affect the biology of the protein-encoded parts. You can erase the markers. It's one of the first times that the 3D has intermingled with the quantum so that science can someday look at the same Human Being over time, knowing that DNA never changes... yet it did! It's yours and it's unique and you changed it. There will be no answer for them, but the 3D facts will show it, that you eliminated the marker.

The joy of this and the beauty of this is that the lineage of the young women who do this will be shown, for their daughters will not have the disease, nor will the daughters of their daughters. It's a new gift and reflects the power of the times. Can you really change those who are your children-to-be? Indeed!

I know what you are thinking. The crowd who sits here says, "Well, it's a little late, Kryon. I've had my children. So why do you sit here and tell me these things?" Are you not understanding where this message is going? Are you not understanding the profundity of what happens when old souls allow us to give this information to Earth? Do you not understand your energy has generated the allotment of allowance for us to come in today and give you this, so that young women and young men who are Lightworkers each will hear it and know what it means to them? Do you understand you're your own ancestors? Has this occurred to you? I see you as actual history, sitting in the chair, from all over the world! That's what I wanted to tell you today.

You don't each have one name to me. I don't even see the gender that you are. I see you in a quantum state and that's why it's so profound that you would let us come in and visit you in this fashion. The woman sits in the chair in front of me. She has no idea the warrior she's been, or how big she was when she was a man. Yet she carries around with her the feeling of the warrior and she knows she's strong. I look at the big, burly man and I see the mother toiling with all those children and the man knows it. He can feel it. He's sensitive and can actually feel the love of a mother. Who is it he used to be? And how has it affected him today? ..."

More people sworn to secrecy over medical error compensation deals

At least 21 patients and relatives have reported signing a gagging agreement when reaching a settlement about poor care or medical errors, the Volkskrant reports on Friday. 

Last week health minister Edith Schippers urged people to let officials know if they had signed a contract pledging not to make public comments about their case or withdraw complaints in return for payments. 

Her call followed news that the parents of 21-year-old man had signed such a deal after he died due to serious medical errors. They also agreed to withdraw a police complaint. 

The 21 contracts involve hospitals, psychiatric care services, care of the elderly and handicapped and pharmaceutical firms, the Volkskrant says. 

Schippers is looking into banning such gagging clauses, saying they are not a desirable development. 

Meanwhile, health ministry inspectors are examining all 21 cases which have been reported to them. ‘The role of the inspectorate is to monitor the quality and safety of care,’ the inspectorate said in a statement. ‘This sort of contract is a direct contravention of that.’

AkzoNobel settles mercury poisoning claim out of court

AkzoNobel has paid a former worker at its chlorine factory in Hengelo ‘several hundred thousand euros’ to settle a claim that his job made him ill, according to local paper Twentsche Courant Tubantia. 

The man claims he was poisoned by mercury while working as a mechanic at the plant in 2003. The factory was closed in 2005. 

A spokeswoman for AkzoNobel has confirmed the payment but refused to make any other comment about the specifics, news agency ANP says. 

She said it had never been proved the man had been poisoned but the opposite could not be conclusively proved either. AkzoNobel decided to settle after years of legal proceedings, she said.

She said the company tested the urine of everyone who works with mercury since 1951 and guidelines have never been exceeded. Workers who showed raised levels were immediately switched to other jobs, she said. 

‘We have always led the pack when it comes to safety,’ plant director Peter de Jong told Tubantia.

Jakarta. Deviating from his planned schedule, President Joko Widodo visited the Dr. M. Djamil Hospital in Padang, West Sumatra, on Tuesday (12/04).

The president observed the implementation of services offered by the Social Security Agency (BPJS) and the Indonesia Health Card (KIS).

"I made an impromptu visit, especially to see the implementation of the BPJS and KIS. Almost 35 percent [of patients] use the KIS and the rest use the BPJS," Joko said in a statement, after inspecting the state-owned hospital's class I general surgery room.

The president also asked several patients for their opinion of the state's health services.

"I asked the patients, and they said they were not being charged any fees, but the hospital had some complaints about payment," Joko said.

The president was accompanied by State Secretary Minister Pratikno and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung during his inspection of the medical facility.

Paris (AFP) - Scientists said Monday they had found a handful of healthy people each carrying a genetic mutation that should have condemned them to crippling disease or death.

The discovery, made by scanning the genomes of nearly 600,000 normal people, opens up a new approach to finding treatments for cystic fibrosis and dozens of other rare and incurable conditions linked to specific variations in a single gene.

Up to now, medical science assumed that anyone unlucky enough to have one of these so-called Mendelian mutations -- named after the 19th-century founder of modern genetics -- was doomed.

"Most genomic studies focus on finding the cause of a disease, but we see tremendous opportunity in figuring out what keeps people healthy," said Eric Schadt, a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York City, and a main architect of the study.

"Millions of years of evolution have produced far more protective mechanisms than we currently understand," he said in a statement.

Together with colleagues Stephen Friend and Rong Chen, Schadt led a team of 30 researchers in sifting through data on nearly 900 genes from each person's genome, looking for the telltale mutations leading to any of hundreds of distinct genetic diseases.

A rigorous process of winnowing left them with 13 individuals who had gene variants that would normally result in one of eight debilitating conditions.

Besides cystic fibrosis, which inflicts severe damage on the lungs and the digestive system, these included Pfeiffer syndrome, characterised by a severe deformation of skull bones, and Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, a disorder linked to multiple malformations and intellectual disability.

The results were published in Nature Biotechnology.

"These rare individuals must possess some combination of factors -- genetic or environmental -- that protects them from an otherwise crippling disease," Daniel MacArthur, a genomics researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital who was not involved in the study, commented in the same journal.

The next step would be to locate enough cases of people who have survived to adulthood despite these genetic flaws to identify -- and eventually duplicate -- these protective mechanisms.

'Genetic superheros'

Until recently, it would have been technically unfeasible to scan hundreds of thousands of human genomes in this manner.

"This study demonstrates the power of using big data to ask new biological questions," said Anne Wojcicki, co-founder and CEO of personal genomics company 23andMe, which participated in the project by providing access to data on more than 400,000 of its customers.

In a frustrating twist, however, the researchers were unable to follow up with any of the 13 people found because of limitations in the consent policies they had signed.

Experts commenting on the study said this was a regretable shortcoming that limited the value of the findings and would need to be changed in future research.

"Some of the patients may have had disease that went unreported," said Scott Hebbring, a scientist at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation and a professor at the University of Wisconsin.

Ada Hamosh, clinical director of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, said mutation for cystic fibrosis were so unlikely in healthy people that the results may have stemmed from a "technical error."

The two cases of Pfeiffer syndrome, he added, could have been so mild as to not be detected as such.

But commentators agreed that the idea of scanning large populations to find individuals who are healthy despite carrying gene variants known to cause disease holds great promise.

"Achieving this goal will require incredibly large sample sizes," measured in millions not thousands, said MacArthur.

It will also need what he called "genetic superheros" to step up and dotate their genomic and clinical data so researchers can pick through them.

Is it possible, dear one, that you could go into the vast storehouse of the attributes of your past lives and pick out something that you need today? The answer is yes. It's called mining the Akash, and it is a staple of the Kryon teaching. However, the way it's accomplished by the individual Human is really difficult to describe. It's a personal intuitive process. However, one attribute of it that is often misunderstood is that permission from the innate is needed. This is because the innate smart body knows what you need. It is then the governor, or the filter, giving you permission regarding what can be pulled out of your Akash and used. It will say no to frivolous things and yes to the things that will allow you to cure yourself of disease, live longer, and increase the efficiency of your DNA. It's a smart body regulator.

Innate doesn't care how you look. It cares about your health. If you want to go into your Akash and pull out something that you need for survival, it's right there with you. If you want to make clearer skin, it won't respond. Do you see what I mean? It's the governor for mining the Akash. By the way, the Akash is very ready to be used for this. [Kryon wink]

You have earned what you've lived, dear ones, and it's very available. It lies in a quantum soup of lifetime information that is ready to be used. If you have a disease in your body right now, and perhaps you want to mine the Akash in a way that will create healing, you can. Like all nonlinear things, it requires a new, mature consciousness and practice to work. But the body is ready for you to "go get" the cellular structure of a past life that had no disease. The blueprint for this resides within you since you earned it and lived it. The innate is responsible for spontaneous remission! Science has no idea how a Human does this. The innate can help you "go get" the things within your earned Akash and place them into your cellular structure. That's how smart it is! Imagine clearing disease so completely that there is no sign it was ever there? It happens all the time. Imagine being able to drop a chemical dependency overnight? It's exactly the same principle.

Did you ever sit in a meeting and something is said or a feeling can happen, and you get chills? What are they? You might say, "They are chills of validation." Guess where they came from? The innate! The innate has the ability to signal you the truth. The brain does not. In fact, your brain will often get in the way. It's the brain that contains your box of belief. It's the brain that contains the perception of who you are based on experience and memory. It's your 3D survival instrument. But the brain can't give truth. It can only give you what it perceives as the truth, based on logical, processed, computed, synaptic reasoning and only based on your past experience.

Your brain can tell you not to touch the stove because of what happened once before. But it can't give you chills of validation from information it does not have. The intellect wants you to believe that your brain is supreme. However, the brain is only one part of the body system and not a very intuitive part. It is the innate that knows the truth. The innate is connected to the quantum parts of your DNA and, therefore, also knows of your spirituality and the truth of God inside. …”

“…  Biology and Intent

Let's talk more about biology because now it gets a little more complex. There is an intermingling of the 3D and the quantum that we wish to describe to you now. It's something that is new, for the vibration of this planet and of humanity, especially of those who are working with the light, is creating a new tool set. You're going to start to see it and it's going to be visible through examination of the 3D chemistry of DNA, even at the 3D level.

Science is now looking at what they call markers in the protein-encoded DNA, which creates the Human genes. These markers, as they are described by science, are those that are the pieces and parts that would indicate predispositions - attributes that might weaken certain cells so that later in life they would allow disease, such as cancer. They're starting to see these markers, perhaps in certain families where mothers and daughters and their daughters and their daughters all had the same kind of disease. They're starting to see the genetic markers that create predisposed weakness.

Let's talk about the markers, for this is the first time we have disclosed this. First the premise: For years we have told you that your intent to talk to your cellular structure has power. This intent is your communication to the DNA field to alter something within the 3D cellular structure. You might say it's your own interdimensional "voice" giving instructions to the quantum part of your DNA, which then results in the actual chemical changes that are occurring in the codes within your 3D genome. But now the results are going to be seen, and you can begin by removing the markers, and when you do, they stay removed. This means that something quantum you do today can change the chemistry of your gene-producing DNA so greatly that it will NOT be passed to your children. You can break the chain.

Blessed are the Human Beings who realize that as they purify their lives with the light of the Creator, it will affect the biology of the protein-encoded parts. You can erase the markers. It's one of the first times that the 3D has intermingled with the quantum so that science can someday look at the same Human Being over time, knowing that DNA never changes... yet it did! It's yours and it's unique and you changed it. There will be no answer for them, but the 3D facts will show it, that you eliminated the marker.

The joy of this and the beauty of this is that the lineage of the young women who do this will be shown, for their daughters will not have the disease, nor will the daughters of their daughters. It's a new gift and reflects the power of the times. Can you really change those who are your children-to-be? Indeed!

I know what you are thinking. The crowd who sits here says, "Well, it's a little late, Kryon. I've had my children. So why do you sit here and tell me these things?" Are you not understanding where this message is going? Are you not understanding the profundity of what happens when old souls allow us to give this information to Earth? Do you not understand your energy has generated the allotment of allowance for us to come in today and give you this, so that young women and young men who are Lightworkers each will hear it and know what it means to them? Do you understand you're your own ancestors? Has this occurred to you? I see you as actual history, sitting in the chair, from all over the world! That's what I wanted to tell you today.

You don't each have one name to me. I don't even see the gender that you are. I see you in a quantum state and that's why it's so profound that you would let us come in and visit you in this fashion. The woman sits in the chair in front of me. She has no idea the warrior she's been, or how big she was when she was a man. Yet she carries around with her the feeling of the warrior and she knows she's strong. I look at the big, burly man and I see the mother toiling with all those children and the man knows it. He can feel it. He's sensitive and can actually feel the love of a mother. Who is it he used to be? And how has it affected him today? ..."

Springsteen cancels N. Carolina show over anti-trans law

New York (AFP) - Bruce Springsteen canceled a concert in North Carolina to protest a law that targets transgender people, vowing to fight against "those who continue to push us backwards."

Springsteen's move marks one of the highest-profile actions yet against the law, which prohibits local governments within the southern state from acting to stop discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender people in public facilities and restrooms.

"To my mind, it's an attempt by people who cannot stand the progress our country has made in recognizing the human rights of all of our citizens to overturn that progress," the rock legend said in a statement.

"Some things are more important than a rock show and this fight against prejudice and bigotry -- which is happening as I write -- is one of them.

"It is the strongest means I have for raising my voice in opposition to those who continue to push us backwards instead of forwards."

Springsteen had been due to perform Sunday in Greensboro, North Carolina as part of a sold-out arena tour revisiting his classic 1980 album "The River."

Springsteen, 66, rose to fame with his tales of the struggles of working-class America and his intense marathon concerts.

He has become increasingly open about his political beliefs in the past decade, campaigning for President Barack Obama and other Democrats.

In his statement, "The Boss" saluted activists and business leaders who have spoken out against North Carolina's law.

Notably, online payment giant PayPal scrapped a $3.6 million investment in North Carolina and the National Basketball Association has warned that it may pull next year's All-Star Game from the state.

The governors of New York and Washington and a number of other local leaders have banned non-essential travel by officials to North Carolina.

North Carolina's Republican governor, Pat McCrory, signed the law last month after its passage by the state legislature in response to a non-discrimination ordinance approved by Charlotte, the largest city in the state.

Spreading of laws in South

A Republican congressman from North Carolina, Mark Walker, told The Hollywood Reporter that other artists were coming to the state including Justin Bieber and Def Leppard.

Saying he might go to the Bieber concert in solidarity, Walker accused Springsteen of a "bully tactic."

"It's like when a kid gets upset and says he's going to take his ball and go home," he said.

The law, known as HB2, requires that transgender people use the restroom corresponding to the sex on their birth certificate.

Another southern state, Mississippi, has followed suit with a measure that allows officials and businesses to deny services to gay people or refuse to employ them if they feel it would violate their religious beliefs.

Steven Van Zandt, a member of Springsteen's E Street Band, said the artists wanted to prevent such laws from spreading, even though it was a "tough decision" to disappoint fans.

"This really vile and evil discrimination is starting to spread state to state and we thought we better take a stand right now and catch it early and maybe try to stop it or at least set some kind of example for others," Van Zandt told reporters at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York.

"It's unfortunately the only way people understand -- you have to hurt them economically in order to have them do the right thing morally," said Van Zandt, who led an artist campaign against apartheid in South Africa.

Van Zandt was taking part in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony to present a lifetime achievement award to late producer and songwriter Bert Berns.
