Russian alcohol consumption down 40%: WHO

Russia might still have a reputation as a nation of hard drinkers, but a report by the World Health Organization published Tuesday showed alcohol consumption has dropped by 43 percent since 2003.

The WHO put the decrease down to a raft of measures brought in under sport-loving President Vladimir Putin, including restrictions on alcohol sales and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

"The Russian Federation has long been considered one of the heaviest-drinking countries in the world," the report said, adding that alcohol was a major contributor to a spike in deaths in the 1990s.

"However, in recent years these trends have been reversed."

The study showed a 43 percent drop in alcohol consumption per capita from 2003 to 2016, driven by a steep decline in the consumption of bootleg booze.

The authors said this trend was a factor in increased life expectancies, which reached a historic peak in 2018, at 78 years for women and 68 years for men.

In the early 1990s, male life expectancy was just 57 years.

Last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev led an anti-alcohol campaign with partial prohibition, which brought down consumption from the mid-1980s until 1990.

But after the collapse of the Soviet Union, alcohol consumption exploded, continuing to rise until the start of the 2000s.

Under Putin, Russia has introduced measures including a ban on shops selling any alcohol after 11 pm, increases in the minimum retail price of spirits and an advertising blackout.

Earlier WHO figures showed Russian adults now drink less alcohol on average than their French and German counterparts.

Moscow has also launched a drive against smoking, last week announcing a ban on lighting up even on private balconies.

Tobacco use plummeted by more than a fifth between 2009 and 2016, down to 30 percent of Russians smoking according to the most recent Global Adult Tobacco Survey.

Frankfurt am Main (AFP) - German MPs have blasted a World Cup promotion by Nutella chocolate spread, after they worked out people would have to scoff almost 16 kilos of the sugary treat to earn a football.

"Once again, the food industry has used the football World Cup to market sweets to children," Greens party MP Renate Kuenast told AFP Tuesday as she and other lawmakers complained to Germany's advertising council.

"It's a red card for Ferrero's Nutella," she added, referring to the Italian manufacturer.

Customers would have to cart home 35 jars of Nutella to gather enough points for a football printed with the signatures of Germany's World Cup team.

That adds up to "15.75 kilos (34.7 pounds) of Nutella, nine kilos of sugar, five kilos of fat, 85,000 calories and 97.65 euros ($113.60)" Kuenast and other MPs wrote to the advertising authority.

They further charged that Ferrero had "exploited kids' special trust" in their favourite football stars by printing their photos on collectible cards.

"We have nothing against the product -- if people like it, they should eat it -- but one shouldn't suggest to children that it has something to do with being sporty, active or healthy," the MPs said.

Kuenast and the other lawmakers hope the advertising council, an industry-run body that watches for ethical breaches in advertising, will block the campaign and issue a warning to Ferrero's German division.

Nine in 10 Dutch youngsters are happy with their lives

Nine out of 10 Dutch youngsters are happy with their lives, according to research by national statistics office CBS. 

The CBS asked over 4,000 12 to 25-year-olds about how happy they were with life in general and about specific aspects such as their work, where they lived and their health. 

It found youngsters are most positive about their friends, their mental health and where they live. They were least happy about their finances and how much free time they had. 

Teenagers are happier than young adults – 94% compared with 87%. Girls are slightly less happy than boys about their appearance, but 78% are still content with the way they look. 

CBS researcher Maarten Bloem told broadcaster NOS there is a high level of life satisfaction in the Netherlands. 

Earlier studies have show Dutch children are among the happiest in the world but a research project by the CBS last year showed 25% of Dutch adults are not happy with their lives.

A Human baby comes into the planet today, but what is going on today is different from when you were born. You're in a new place in space, the Sun is quiet, you have the nodes and the nulls feeding new information into the grids, and the paradigm of consciousness is different for them than it was for you. Their Genesis cells, the "how a Human works" cells, are changing.

Things will start working that are unusually different for standard Human nature. The intuitive self, the barrier between innate and consciousness, will start to improve. The barrier starts to become less. Be ready for children who have very accurate intuition about what's wrong with them. If they tell you something's wrong, take them to the doctor! Immediately. Don't tell them, "It's your imagination, honey", or, "It will be okay later; it's growing pains." Do you hear that? There are those listening to this right now who need to hear that, because their children are saying, "I feel funny; something’s wrong." Mothers who are used to raising children are also used to an old energy paradigm that has a certain health template. This is changing. The kids are starting to awaken to being intuitive about their own health. The bridge isn't built yet to innate, but it is closer with them and they're feeling something. Innate is talking to them for the first time. Listen: You didn't have it, but they do. Listen to them.

The Akash of the child is starting to become clearer. These children are going to tell you many things about who they've been and what they've done. If you're a parent and you are listening to this now, the worst thing you can do is suppress it. The best thing you can do is to tell the child the absolute truth, the absolute truth: "I believe you." When you say things out loud, it helps the child. That's truthful and the child will get it. Listen, parent: In these things, be an ally to your child, and it will change your relationship with your children. Be honest with them about it all. Tell them not everyone will understand, so there are times to be quiet about it. These are instructions for kids in the New Age. These attributes are going to get even stronger, and your instructions will make sense.

Instinct is going to work better than it ever has. Instinct is not something that you are used to seeing much in Humans. You see it in animals mostly, because the offspring of animals have a very strong survival instinct. It is passed to them so well that they can actually walk within hours of birth! You don't have that. However, this same mechanical passing of instinct is starting to become stronger in Humans, and especially that which will come from the Akash. It is chemical as well as being esoteric (genetic and Akashic). As it is in animals, you should have it also and you will. You're going to see children remembering how to walk and how to eat much earlier, without training. It will be faster than the older paradigm, and faster than the doctors who know about child development will have seen. It will be "off the scale". Get ready for it; it's instinct. It's simple chemistry. It's the DNA working better.

If you look at the DNA cell itself, you might ask, what is happening? The truth is that DNA is becoming more informed, some say "enabled". Now, there is a buzzword in esoteric belief called activation. Please don't change it, but know that it's not accurate. You are not activating anything. Instead, you are releasing DNA from a prison. If you have somebody who is crippled in a chair, shriveled and not able to move, yet suddenly they are released from this bondage, and the fingers untangle and the hand starts to become whole again, it's because something that has happened to the DNA. It hasn't happened to the hand, or to the muscle, or to the fingers, not even to the arm, but to the DNA. It's a release. I want you to hold this vision. All the changes I have talked about are about being released from  a prison of crippled DNA! And (get ready), it happens to ALL DNA in the body at once. It's a "whole body experience", not a local "hand/arm" one.

Your DNA is crippled in this old energy, and it's your own free choice that created this. Your DNA, your lifespan (aging), your diseases are all where you wanted to take the energy of this planet, and your DNA cooperated. This is what you've lived with, and what is now changing. It's not DNA activation, it's DNA release. Release!

The profundity of it all: Do you realize the help that you have? Did you think for a moment that all of this was going to be you just doing these things? It involves the galaxy, the part of space you're in, the nodes and the nulls, and the creator of the Universe. It involves the Pleiadians, it involves your timeline, and it involves love. All of this is for you to sit in a new energy and release the bonds of your DNA. Now, dear ones, old souls, there is something you ought to know. You don't have to wait to be reborn for this. The old soul has the equipment inside right now, just like the newborn.  ….”

Number three: There'll never be a time in Human history that is more profound than this one, when it comes to how the body is listening to what you are saying. There is a process, and always has been, where the cells of the body are on alert to what the boss - you - wants. For years, we have been asking you to talk to your body, talk to your cellular structure. Now we're going to tell you that it's listening, even when you don't realize what you're automatically saying! It's now listening 24-7. So what are you saying to it?

This is now a time where negative dialogue will have more personal influence on you than ever before. Think about what you are saying in life as you move around socially. What is your attitude when you say it, and how often do you say it? Your body is listening. Dear Lightworker, part of your spiritual evolution is that the body, the innate, is now aware of everything. Now, you may say, “Well, that's nice.” It's more than nice; it's profound! If you don't listen to this and understand it, you will keep you aging in the same old way you have. This is why we have spoken of affirmations more than ever before. This is far more than just positive thinking. Every time you open your mouth, you have the potential to give instructions to your body, and it listens to you when you talk to it. Unfortunately, your habits are to tell your body that you are unworthy!

I want you to think about what you're saying. When somebody asks you about your health, about your spirituality, about your intent, or about your aging, do you say the words, “I am working on it. I am trying”? The result is the cells of your body say, "Well, she's working on it - she is trying," but (implied), "She doesn't have it yet." I want you to listen to yourself when you talk. Are you giving "less than" messages to your own body?

Perhaps I've said enough, but almost every single one of you comes from a culture that is proud of demeaning itself in some way. It's an old habit from old ways that are supposed to represent a gracious countenance. Someone wants to give you a gift or celebrate your birthday. How many of you automatically say, "You shouldn't have"? Do you realize that your actions and words are saying, “I don't deserve it" to your own innate? Your actions say, “I am unworthy.” Don't you think your body hears this or sees it? It does. It is time to get out of the unworthy closet, Lightworker! You are alive with God inside! Don't be afraid or ashamed to proclaim, “I am healthy, I am healed, I am youthing, I am in charge of the situation.” Not, “I'm working on it” or, “I'm trying.” That tells your body that it may happen someday, but not today. That's the difference. “I am worthy of happiness. I am worthy of a peaceful situation in my life. I am worthy of a solution in my life.”

When someone wants to give you a gift or celebrate your birthday, automatically say, "Thank you for this wonderful gift!" Your innate will hear, "I am worthy of this gift of appreciation from others." Then love them for it. ….”

IOC reports 23 positive doping re-tests from 2012 London Games

The IOC said the 23 positive re-tests were on athletes from six countries competing in five sports. This comes a week after it announced that 31 new cases had been found in the Beijing Olympics.

A statement issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday said that the positive results had come from re-tests, which were carried out on 265 selected doping samples based on intelligence-gathering that began in August of last year.

The IOC said all athletes found to have doped would be banned from competing at the summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.

"These reanalyses show, once again, our determination in the fight against doping. We want to keep the dopers away from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro," IOC President Thomas Bach said.

"I have already appointed a disciplinary commission which has the full power to take all the decisions on behalf of the IOC."

Last week the IOC announced that 31 athletes from six sports could be banned from the Rio de Janeiro Games in August after failing doping tests when 454 samples were re-examined from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The IOC stores samples taken from athletes for a period of 10 years in order to allow for re-testing with newer methods or to look for new drugs. It has said that it will not identify the athletes or their sports until the 'b' tests on the samples have been completed - a process that can take several weeks.

Johan Cruijff confirms lung cancer diagnosis

Dutch football legend Johan Cruijff has lung cancer, his management confirmed on Thursday. 

The cancer was confirmed by a hospital in Barcelona and Cruijff is now undergoing further tests to decide what treatment he should be given. Cruijff, who is 68, has lived in Spain for years. 

Spanish media reported earlier on Thursday that Cruijff was sick and his former club, Barcelona, have wished him well. 

Cruijff had heart trouble in the early 1990s and underwent a bypass operation. He also stopped smoking around that time. 

Having advertised cigarettes when a player, Cruijff took part in an anti-smoking commercial in Catalonia. In the advert, Cruijff said football had given him everything but that smoking had taken almost everything away.

" ... The Shift in Human Nature

You're starting to see integrity change. Awareness recalibrates integrity, and the Human Being who would sit there and take advantage of another Human Being in an old energy would never do it in a new energy. The reason? It will become intuitive, so this is a shift in Human Nature as well, for in the past you have assumed that people take advantage of people first and integrity comes later. That's just ordinary Human nature.

In the past, Human nature expressed within governments worked like this: If you were stronger than the other one, you simply conquered them. If you were strong, it was an invitation to conquer. If you were weak, it was an invitation to be conquered. No one even thought about it. It was the way of things. The bigger you could have your armies, the better they would do when you sent them out to conquer. That's not how you think today. Did you notice?

Any country that thinks this way today will not survive, for humanity has discovered that the world goes far better by putting things together instead of tearing them apart. The new energy puts the weak and strong together in ways that make sense and that have integrity. Take a look at what happened to some of the businesses in this great land (USA). Up to 30 years ago, when you started realizing some of them didn't have integrity, you eliminated them. What happened to the tobacco companies when you realized they were knowingly addicting your children? Today, they still sell their products to less-aware countries, but that will also change.

What did you do a few years ago when you realized that your bankers were actually selling you homes that they knew you couldn't pay for later? They were walking away, smiling greedily, not thinking about the heartbreak that was to follow when a life's dream would be lost. Dear American, you are in a recession. However, this is like when you prune a tree and cut back the branches. When the tree grows back, you've got control and the branches will grow bigger and stronger than they were before, without the greed factor. Then, if you don't like the way it grows back, you'll prune it again! I tell you this because awareness is now in control of big money. It's right before your eyes, what you're doing. But fear often rules. ..."

US grandma, 92, sets record for oldest woman marathoner

San Diego (AFP) - A 92-year-old US grandmother has become the oldest woman to finish a marathon, when she crossed the finish line of a San Diego 26-miler on Sunday, race organizers said.

A smiling Harriette Thompson, aged 92 years and 65 days, was cheered by dozens of onlookers and supporters as she completed the Southern California event in seven hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds.

Speaking to her hometown newspaper, the Charlotte Observer, Thompson said she felt "a little stiff" after the race.

"I was really tired at one point. Around mile 21, I was going up a hill and it was like a mountain," she told the Observer.

"I was thinking, 'This is sort of crazy at my age.' But then I felt better coming down the hill. And my son Brenny kept feeding me all this wonderful carbohydrates that kept me going."

The previous oldest woman marathon runner was another American, Gladys "Gladyator" Burrill, who was 92 years and 19 days old when she did the Honolulu event in 2010.

Thompson participated in the marathon to raise money for cancer research, a disease she has herself survived.

The grandmother to 10 grandkids also completed the race last year with a time of seven hours, seven minutes and 42 seconds.

The oldest male marathon runner is Fauja Singh, who was 101 when he retired from racing in 2013.

Los Angeles (AFP) - US Olympic champion turned reality TV star Bruce Jenner won praise Saturday from celebrities and activists for revealing he is transitioning from male to female, ending long-running speculation he identifies as a woman.

In a highly anticipated, two-hour television interview aired Friday -- hailed by transgender rights' campaigners and his own Kardashian-linked family -- the 65-year-old said he had wrestled with his sexual identity since he was a kid.

"I've always been confused about my gender identity since I was this big," he told ABC's celebrity interviewer Diane Sawyer.

"Here I am, stuck -- and I hate the word -- (a) girl stuck in a guy's body... As of now I have all the male parts and all that kind of stuff."

But asked point blank if he was a woman, Jenner said: "Yes. For all intents and purposes, I'm a woman."

Speculation that the actor, race-car enthusiast and 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics decathlon gold medalist was undergoing a sex change has been rich fodder for supermarket tabloids for months.

Supposed telltale signs, based on paparazzi photos from the streets of Los Angeles, include shaved limbs, long hair worn in a ponytail and what appears to be a sports bra under a T-shirt.

'I am not gay'

Jenner said he identifies himself as "her," but not by a specific name. The ABC interviewer used "he" and "him" throughout, without causing any apparent discomfort for the former Olympian.

He stressed the difference between gender identity and sexuality.

"I am not gay," Jenner said. "I am, as far as I know, heterosexual. I've always been with a woman, raising kids."

Just before making the long-expected announcement, Jenner symbolically let his hair down.

"Let's take the damn ponytail out," he told Sawyer, smiling.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights group GLAAD welcomed Jenner's announcement.

"Though Jenner's journey is one that is deeply personal, it is also one that will impact and inspire countless people around the world," GLAAD head Sarah Kate Ellis said.

Singer Miley Cyrus gushed on Twitter: "I LOOOOVE LOOOVE LOOOVE Bruce Jenner!!!!!!!"

Born outside New York in October 1949, thrice-married Jenner became an American sports hero when he set a world record with his Montreal decathlon victory.

Leveraging his fame, he appeared on boxes of Wheaties, a popular American cereal known as "the breakfast of champions," then tried his hand as a movie actor, with less than stellar results.

But it was through his marriage to the former Kris Kardashian that he once again became a household name in "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" in which he appeared as the sometimes bemused stepfather of her flamboyant daughters Kourtney, Kim and Khloe.

The couple have two daughters of their own, but they obtained a divorce in December, 14 months after separating -- although he has been seen still wearing a wedding ring.

Hero once again

"Not only was I able to call him my husband for 25 years and father of my children, I am now able to call him my hero," Kris Jenner tweeted.

Jenner's 89-year-old mother Esther hailed her son's announcement, comparing her pride to that when he won at the Olympics.

"I never thought I could be more proud of you. But I'm learning I can be," she wrote.

Jenner's son Brandon tweeted simply: "Proud son," along with an Instagram picture of himself as a young boy perched on his smiling father's shoulders.

Step-daughter Kim Kardashian trumpeted:

"Love is the courage to live the truest, best version of yourself. Bruce is love. I love you Bruce. ."

Her sister Khloe wrote: "Bruzer, I'm soooo proud of you! Dads really are heros."

National Center for Transgender Equality advocacy group executive director Mara Keisling called Jenner's declaration "one of the most profound displays of bravery and courage I've seen."

Jenner, clearly relieved to have finally come clean, said: "I'm saying goodbye to people's perceptions of me and who I am.

"I'm not saying goodbye to me because this has always been me."

Japanese centenarian sets world swimming record

Japan's Mieko Nagaoka has become the first centenarian to complete a 1,500-meter freestyle race. She took up swimming at the sprightly age of 80 and has no intention of slowing down.

You could be forgiven for taking it easy once you've turned 100, but Mieko Nagaoka from Ehime, western Japan swam a 1,500-meter freestyle race instead. And made history. She is the first person in the 100 to 104-year-old category to complete the race. It took her just under 1 hour and 16 minutes.

Admittedly, it's a more leisurely pace than that set by 18-year-old US swimmer Katie Ledecky, who holds the women's world record of 15 minutes 28.36. Nagaoka, who only took up the sport at the age of 80, told the Kyodo news agency: "I want to swim until I turn 105 if I can live that long."

race for Nagaoka

Her achievement is expected to be recognized by Guinness World Records, the agency reported.

Japanese people have one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Government figures from last September counted 59,000 centenarians in Japan, which means 46 out of every 100,000 people are 100 years or older.

Japanese sprinter Hidekichi Miyazaki - known as "Golden Bolt" - was 103 when he bagged the world record for the 100-meter dash in the 100-104 age category, at a respectable 29.83 seconds.

(13) Question: Dear Kryon, I’m very concerned about the obesity epidemic, particularly in the U.S. Around me I see people getting bigger and more unhealthy, all for the sake of convenience and saving time. You mentioned at one point a famine, and I suspect the famine won’t be from a lack of food, but from an abundance of food that has no nutritional value.

I wonder how we can honor the Earth by eating nothing that comes straight from it? Of course this involves caring for the lands and oceans as part of a bigger issue and making that connection, too. Is this what it will finally take for people to switch to a healthier way of living?

Its amazing how detached people are from the food they eat. We don’t even honor our digestive processes, the way we combine foods. Whatever happened to nutrition? Atkins is no solution; there is no balance in it. Gastric bypass is all about quantity reduction, not quality increase. When will people make the direct connection between what/how they eat and their health? Is a change in diet and lifestyle part of the upcoming shift?

Answer: The shift has little to do with it. It’s a culture-specific problem and has to do with consciousness of health. Go study the cultures on your planet that have very few overweight Humans. Start with the Japanese. They have some of the same western work ethics and live in very sophisticated industrial-based environments. Yet they aren’t overweight. It’s about the core food groups and the combination of them.

“…  3 - Longer Life is Going to Happen, But…

Here is one that is a review. We keep bringing it up because Humans don't believe it. If you're going to start living longer, there are those who are frightened that there will be overpopulation. You've seen the way it is so far, and the geometric progression of mathematics is absolute and you cannot change it. So if you look at the population of the earth and how much it has shifted in the last two decades, it's frightening to you. What would change that progression?

The answer is simple, but requires a change in thinking. The answer is a civilization on the planet who understands a new survival scenario. Instead of a basic population who has been told to have a lot of children to enhance the race [old survival], they begin to understand the logic of a new scenario. The Akashic wisdom of the ages will start to creep in with a basic survival scenario shift. Not every single woman will look at herself and say, "The clock is ticking," but instead can say, "I have been a mother 14 times in a row. I'm going to sit this one out." It's a woman who understands that there is no loss or guilt in this, and actually feels that the new survival attribute is to keep the family small or not at all! Also, as we have said before, even those who are currently ignorant of population control will figure out what is causing babies to be born [Kryon joke].

Part of the new Africa will be education and healing, and eventually a zero population growth, just like some of the first-world nations currently have. Those who are currently tied to a spiritual doctrine will actually have that doctrine changed (watch for it) regarding Human birth. Then they will be able to make free choice that is appropriate even within the establishment of organized religion. You see, things are going to change where common sense will say, "Perhaps it would help the planet if I didn't have children or perhaps just one child." Then the obvious, "Perhaps I can exist economically better and be wiser with just one. It will help the one!" Watch for these changes. For those of you who are steeped in the tradition of the doctrines and would say that sounds outrageously impossible, I give you the new coming pope [Kryon smile]. For those of you who feel that uncontrolled procreation is inevitable, I encourage you to see statistics you haven't seen or didn't care to look at yet about what first-world countries have already accomplished on their own, without any mandates. It's already happening. That was number three.….”

Wheelchair basketball gives new hope to disabled Afghan women

Kabul (AFP) - They have lost limbs to landmines and been disabled by mortar shrapnel, but Afghanistan's wheelchair women basketball players refuse to call themselves victims.

Clashing wheelchairs, hooting supporters and balls swishing through hoops brought a drab grey court in downtown Kabul alive Wednesday, in the final of the country's third annual competition organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

At the end of the forty minutes of play, the scoreline read Mazar-i-Sharif 26, Kabul 9 -- but for many of the athletes who took part it was also a personal triumph over years of adversity.

Mariam Samimi, a member of the winning side, was just six when she stepped on undetonated ordnance in her native northern province of Balkh, blowing off her toes.

It was 1996 and the height of Afghanistan's civil war, when prosthetics and good medical treatment were in short supply.

Now a trained social worker as well as a competitive athlete, the 23-year-old said she wanted others to know that a disability does not mean having to give up on your dreams.

"Don't be disheartened, always have courage, and do not say I can't do it. Be confident all the time, don't feel that you are disabled and (that) I should be at home," she said.

Afghanistan has been at war since 1979 when the Soviet Union invaded to prop up the communist government.

After the Soviets withdrew in 1989, a civil war began. The hardline Taliban seized power in 1996 but were ousted in 2001 by a US-led coalition.

The Taliban have waged a guerrilla war ever since against Afghan and foreign troops.

The country is one of the world's most heavily mined nations, with dozens of people still killed or maimed every month.

It is also one of just three countries where polio is still a problem, due to the disruption of health services and Taliban opposition to vaccination.

Nineteen-year-old Kamila Rahimi, who helped her side to victory with five goals, has been unable to walk since she was a toddler due to the disease. When she's on the court, it doesn't matter.

"I feel very happy to be playing basketball because I like the company of my teammates. When I laugh, they laugh with me, when I cry, they cry with me," she said.

In the final Kabul took an early lead but were comfortably beaten in the end by a more polished Mazar side, as several players were forced to give up on their hijabs while whizzing around the court.

The best players from the two-day tournament, which included the western city of Herat, will go on to play for the national team, said Alberto Cairo, head of the ICRC orthopaedic programme in Afghanistan.

Twenty-three-year-old Aziza Ahmadi, who was paralysed in her left foot when shrapnel from a mortar attack on her Kabul home hit her 18 years ago, said she hoped to make the grade.

"My dream is to go to play in European countries like Italy, Germany and France," she said with a smile.

A teenage Indian sprinter who was banned from international competition for failing a "gender test" is hoping her fight against rules on sexual identity will spare others the same fate.

Dutee Chand, 18, said she has suffered trauma and embarrassment, but her challenge in the Court of Arbitration for Sport could change controversial rules set by athletics' world governing body.

Chand, the daughter of weavers who was brought up in rural poverty, had her promising career turned upside down when she was barred from this year's Commonwealth Games after showing elevated levels of testosterone.

"I was devastated," India's under-18 100 metres champion told AFP. "I didn't know what I had done wrong. I had not taken any drugs, I had made no mistake so why was I being singled out?"

Chand was diagnosed with hyperandrogenism, a condition which produces high testosterone levels and meant she fell foul of the International Association of Athletics Federation's (IAAF) gender rules.

They were introduced after the IAAF's struggles with the case of South African runner Caster Semenya, who was banned but later reinstated following investigations into her gender.

The rules are intended to stop women competing with high levels of testosterone, which is known to increase strength and muscle mass.

But critics have challenged the science involved, saying the link between testosterone and performance is unclear, and that testing is arbitrary and psychologically damaging.

"I was told I must undergo surgery or take hormonal treatment if I wanted to salvage my career. I was stunned to hear all this," Chand said by telephone from Bhubaneshwar, in her home state of Orissa.

"It's so cruel. God has made me the way I am. I don't want to change anything and I also don't want to give up sports."

The IAAF told AFP it would not comment on the case, which is expected to be decided within the next six months.

But the body said its regulations were meant "to uphold competitive equality" rather than question gender.

"The IAAF regulation is based on extensive international expertise in both ethics and medical science," Chris Turner of the IAAF communications department said in an email to AFP.

'It's so humiliating'

Chand is the first to challenge the gender rules, but she is not the only Indian athlete to be caught up in similar circumstances.

Santhi Soundarajan was stripped of her 800m silver medal from the 2006 Asian Games after being forced to undergo invasive and humiliating gender verification tests -- a devastating turn of events that drove her to attempt suicide.

Pinki Pramanik, who retired in 2007 after winning a team gold in the 4x400m relay at the same Asian Games, was accused of being a man and raping her housemate in 2012.

Although Pramanik was later cleared of the charges, she still carries psychological scars from the episode and the numerous tests she was given by police to determine her sex.

Chand said journalists had bombarded her parents with questions like: "Is she a boy or a girl?", and "Does she have periods?"

"Can you imagine what me and my family are going through? It's so humiliating," she said.

With help from a researcher on gender and sports, Chand decided to fight her case and last month she filed an appeal with the sports arbitration court in Switzerland.

"The officials are also supporting me in my fight. I now feel the whole country is behind me," she said.

"I just hope and pray that my case sets a precedent so that others like me don't have to suffer the kind of trauma I am going through."

Chand enrolled in a national training programme in 2006, and with the prize money she won in athletic meets she earned enough to move her family to a four-room house in the city.

She can take heart from Semenya, who was initially stripped of her 800m world title but carried her country's flag at the opening of the 2012 Olympics, where she won 800m silver.

"It's heartening to know there are other women like me," said Chand. "I want people to respect me for who I am. I don't want to be scrutinised and ridiculed for no fault of mine."
