“…… Should I use Doctors and Drugs to Heal Me or Spiritual Methods?

"Dear Kryon, I have heard that you should stay natural and not use the science on the planet for healing. It does not honor God to go to a doctor. After all, don't you say that we can heal with our minds? So why should we ever go to a doctor if we can do it ourselves? Not only that, my doctor isn't enlightened, so he has no idea about my innate or my spiritual body needs. What should I do?"

First, Human Being, why do you wish to put so many things in boxes? You continue to want a yes and no answer for complex situations due to your 3D, linear outlook on almost everything. Learn to think out of the 3D box! Look at the heading of this section [above]. It asks which one should you do. It already assumes you can't do both because they seem dichotomous.

Let's use some spiritual logic: Here is a hypothetical answer, "Don't go to a doctor, for you can heal everything with your mind." So now I will ask: How many of you can do that in this room right now? How many readers can do that with efficiency right now? All of you are old souls, but are you really ready to do that? Do you know how? Do you have really good results with it? Can you rid disease and chemical imbalance with your mind right now?

I'm going to give you a truth, whether you choose to see it or not. You're not ready for that! You are not yet prepared to take on the task of full healing using your spiritual tools. Lemurians could do that, because Pleiadians taught them how! It's one of the promises of God, that there'll come a day when your DNA works that efficiently and you will be able to walk away from drug chemistry and the medical industry forever, for you'll have the creator's energy working at 100 percent, something you saw within the great masters who walked the earth.

This will be possible within the ascended earth that you are looking forward to, dear one. Have you seen the news lately? Look out the window. Is that where you are now? We are telling you that the energy is going in that direction, but you are not there yet.

Let those who feel that they can heal themselves begin the process of learning how. Many will be appreciative of the fact that you have some of the gifts for this now. Let the process begin, but don't think for a moment that you have arrived at a place where every health issue can be healed with your own power. You are students of a grand process that eventually will be yours if you wish to begin the quantum process of talking to your cells. Some will be good at this, and some will just be planting the seeds of it.

Now, I would like to tell you how Spirit works and the potentials of what's going to happen in the next few years. We're going to give the doctors of the planet new inventions and new science. These will be major discoveries about the Human body and of the quantum attributes therein.

Look at what has already happened, for some of this science has already been given to you and you are actually using it. Imagine a science that would allow the heart to be transplanted because the one you have is failing. Of course! It's an operation done many times a month on this planet. That information came from the creator, did you realize that? It didn't drop off the shelf of some dark energy library to be used in evil ways.

So, if you need a new heart, Lightworker, should you go to the doctor or create one with your mind? Until you feel comfortable that you can replace your heart with a new one by yourself, then you might consider using the God-given information that is in the hands of the surgeon. For it will save your life, and create a situation where you stay and continue to send your light to the earth! Do you see what we're saying?

You can also alter that which is medicine [drugs] and begin a process that is spectacular in its design, but not very 3D. I challenge you to begin to use what I would call the homeopathic principle with major drugs. If some of you are taking major drugs in order to alter your chemistry so that you can live better and longer, you might feel you have no choice. "Well, this is keeping me alive," you might say. "I don't yet have the ability to do this with my consciousness, so I take the drugs."

In this new energy, there is something else that you can try if you are in this category. Do the following with safety, intelligence, common sense and logic. Here is the challenge: The principle of homeopathy is that an almost invisible tincture of a substance is ingested and is seen by your innate. Innate "sees" what you are trying to do and then adjusts the body's chemistry in response. Therefore, you might say that you are sending the body a "signal for balance." The actual tincture is not large enough to affect anything chemically - yet it works!

The body [innate] sees what you're trying to do and then cooperates. In a sense, you might say the body is healing itself because you were able to give it instructions through the homeopathic substance of what to do. So, why not do it with a major drug? Start reducing the dosage and start talking to your cells, and see what happens. If you're not successful, then stop the reduction. However, to your own amazement, you may often be successful over time.

You might be able to take the dosage that you're used to and cut it to at least a quarter of what it was. It is the homeopathy principle and it allows you to keep the purpose of the drug, but reduce it to a fraction of a common 3D dosage. You're still taking it internally, but now it's also signaling in addition to working chemically. The signal is sent, the body cooperates, and you reduce the chance of side effects.

You can't put things in boxes of yes or no when it comes to the grand system of Spirit. You can instead use spiritual logic and see the things that God has given you on the planet within the inventions and processes. Have an operation, save your life, and stand and say, "Thank you, God, for this and for my being born where these things are possible." It's a complicated subject, is it not? Each of you is so different! You'll know what to do, dear one. Never stress over that decision, because your innate will tell you what is appropriate for you if you're willing to listen. ….”

Danone in management shuffle amid China bribery claims

BBC News, 15 October 2013

Related Stories

China has been hit by a series of
milk-related scandals over the past years
Dumex, a baby food brand owned by French firm Danone, has said it will appoint new management following allegations of bribery in China.

Last month, a report carried by China Central Television alleged the firm paid doctors to promote its products.

Dumex said the claims were related to its sponsored programme on nutritional awareness in China.

The company said it accepted "full accountability" for lapses in it and had suspended the programme.

"Disciplinary actions will be taken according to the relevant company regulations including appointing new management personnel to deal with relevant issues," Dumex China was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency.

The firm added that it would implement a three-month training program in marketing responsibility for all employees to ensure compliance with company policies and government regulations.

The CCTV report, which cited an unidentified former sales manager, alleged that Dumex paid doctors and nurse in the northern city of Tianjin.

The company said at the time that it was "extremely shocked" by the allegations and announced an internal probe into the matter.

Growing demand

Demand for foreign brands has surged in China, after tainted milk scandals in recent years led to a distrust of local producers.

According to some estimates, foreign brands now account for about half of all infant milk sales in China.

Danone is one of the firms that has benefited from the rising demand. It is the country's third-largest baby formula provider.

Danone's baby nutrition unit also makes more than 20% of its overall sales from China.

However, it has faced problems in the country this year.

Danone cut prices for its infant milk formula products by as much as 20% after China's top economic planning body fined it in August for price-fixing.

The firm also had to issue a precautionary recall of its milk formula products last month after one of its suppliers, Fonterra, said some items may have been contaminated.

Targeting corruption

The allegations against Danone have surfaced amid a government-led crackdown on corruption in its $350bn (£220bn) healthcare market.

Some inquiries have targeted foreign firms, including British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, which is being investigated for allegedly using inducements to promote the sale of its medicines.

In the CCTV report, Danone's Dumex brand was accused of giving "sponsorship fees" or payments of up to 10,000 yuan ($1,632) to hospital staff.

A separate report carried by Chinese newspaper 21st Century Business Herald last month, made similar allegations against another Danone unit.

It alleged that Nutricia, maker of Karicare milk formula, bribed doctors to boost sales.

The report, which also cited an unidentified person, claimed that the unit gave gifts and travel subsidies to more than 100 doctors in 14 hospitals in Beijing.

The statement issued by Dumex, did not refer to those allegations.

China targets US$1.3tn health service sector by 2020

China has set the target of increasing the gross value of its health service sector to over 8 trillion yuan (US$1.31 trillion) by 2020, according to a guideline issued by the State Council on Monday.

More measures will be taken to boost this sector, which will serve to improve people's wellbeing as well as shoring up growth, said the guideline.

The health service industry covers medical services, health management, health insurance, and other supporting sectors related to pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, healthcare facilities and healthcare food.

New measures to increase private capital in the sector will include relaxing market admittance requirements for investment from non-governmental sources, and giving equal treatment to not-for-profit private medical institutions and public medical establishments.

The government will also simplify approval procedures for rehabilitation centers, hospitals for children and elderly patients, and nursing homes, according to the guideline.

China will encourage cooperation between medical establishments and nursing homes, so as to provide treatment of chronic diseases to elderly patients in local communities.

The guideline added that the government encourages insurance companies to diversify commercial health insurance products and vows to make the commercial insurance scheme cover more people.

Liu Guo'en, an expert tracking China's health reform and a professor at the Guanghua School of Management of Peking University, said the new policy aims to improve people's health from a life-cycle perspective.

It pays more attention to health management, highlighting early detection and early treatment of diseases through a health checkup, said Liu.

Han Xiaohong, president of Ciming Health Checkup Management Group, one of the largest healthcare checkup providers in China, hailed the supportive measures for private capital.

Four investment projects of Ciming have previously been vetoed by government authorities as they were located "too close to public hospitals," according to Han.

"Health checkup centers like us are not allowed to purchase nuclear magnetic resonance machines, limiting our services to customers," said Han.

With the new guideline in place, Han expected more detailed policies to be rolled out soon, so his company will be better positioned to compete with public hospitals.

‘De-Americanized’ World Needed After US Shutdown: China Media

Jakarta Globe – AFP, October 13, 2013

Beijing. While US politicians grapple with how to reopen their shuttered government and avoid a potentially disastrous default on their debt, the world should consider “de-Americanizing,” a commentary on China’s official news agency said Sunday.

“As US politicians of both political parties [fail to find a] viable deal to bring normality to the body politic they brag about, it is perhaps a good time for the befuddled world to start considering building a de-Americanized world,” the commentary on state news agency Xinhua said.

In a lengthy polemic against American hegemony since World War two, it added: “Such alarming days when the destinies of others are in the hands of a hypocritical nation have to be terminated.

“A new world order should be put in place, according to which all nations, big or small, poor or rich, can have their key interests respected and protected on an equal footing.”

Negotiations over how to end the budgetary impasse have shifted to the US Senate after House Representatives failed to strike a deal with President Obama on extending borrowing authority ahead of an October 17 deadline.

Beijing has in recent days issued warnings as well as appeals for a deal, all the while emphasizing the inseparable economic ties that bind the world’s two biggest economies.

“The cyclical stagnation in Washington for a viable bipartisan solution over a federal budget and an approval for raising debt ceiling has again left many nations’ tremendous dollar assets in jeopardy and the international community highly agonized,” said the commentary.

China is the biggest foreign holder of US Treasury bonds, worth a total of $1.28 trillion according to US government data.

“Instead of honoring its duties as a responsible leading power, a self-serving Washington has abused its superpower status and introduced even more chaos into the world by shifting financial risks overseas,” but equally stoked “regional tensions amid territorial disputes, and fighting unwarranted wars under the cover of outright lies” the commentary said, referring to Iraq.

It added that emerging economies should have a greater say in major international financial institutions the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and proposed a “new international reserve currency that is to be created to replace the dominant US dollar.”

China has only slightly more weight than Italy at the IMF, which has been headed by a European since its creation in 1944.

A governance reform has been in the works for three years but its implementation has been blocked by the effective veto of the United States.

Opposition to President Obama and the Transition to Uncorrupted Governments

goldenageofgaia.comSteve BeckowAn Hour with an Angel, September 30, 2013, with Archangel Michael

SB: All right. Maybe I can squeeze in one or two questions just before we go.

At this moment it seems as if in the American political spectrum the same blind opposition to President Obama is still apparent. When and how will the governments of the world emerge as uncorrupted institutions, given that there will now be a wholesale move towards new administrations? I don’t mean a toppling of administrations, but a reformation throughout the world.

AAM: The political landscape, not only in the United States but in many places, is going to shift rather dramatically in the coming year, and particularly within the next several months. Do not be overly concerned about opposition to Obama. What it is doing is bringing to the forefront — and making it very public — those who do not wish this energy [Obama] to be in a leadership position. That is not going to change. It will come to the forefront and the light will win.

SB: Oh, that’s very reassuring.

AAM: We are very present in the White House.

SB: Oh! Very good! Okay.  I think I recall you mentioning Medicare in Canada. Canada has a wonderful system of universal medicare. When will the United States enjoy the same quality of medicare? Or other nations, for that matter.

AAM: You see, this is one of the fundamental rights, and your United Nations has just begun to peek at this.  All of your — yes, all — of your medical systems have been based on false grids that you are eligible for disease. Many, many industries have grown up around this belief system.

Now, we would not dismantle this in a day, because the displacement would be very large, but you have already begun to see the shift to wellness, to healing centers, to alternative methods of energy healing. And with the arrival of your star brothers and sisters this will become even more so.

So not only universal medical care, but universal healthcare and the right to wellness is going to become the simple stand-alone fact over the next year to two years. Oh, and it will happen much more quickly in the United States.

SB: Oh, that’s good to hear. So many people are bankrupted by a sudden illness. And it never should be that way.

AAM: It is an atrocity that one may suffer and die because one does not have adequate money. That is absurd.

The Unthinkable… Politics, A Review

Humans will begin to search for integrity and fairness and it's going to happen in the places you never expect. I said this last week, so this is a review. There'll come a time when you will demand this of your politics - fairness and integrity. So when the candidates start calling each other names, you will turn your back on them and they won't get any votes. They're going to get the point real fast, don't you think? How about that?

Let me give you another potential. This country that I sit in right now [USA] will set the mold for that particular attribute. I have no clock. Watch for the youngsters to set this in motion, and they will, for they are the voters of tomorrow and they do not want the energy of today. To some of them, it's so abominable they won't even register to vote in this energy. You're going to see this soon. That was number five.. ..."

“…  Government

Let us speak of government. We're not speaking of your government, but of any government - the way it works, how it survives, how it has survived, the way it campaigns, and how it elects leaders. It's going to change.

Years ago, I told you, "When everybody can talk to everybody, there can be no secrets." Up to this point on this planet, government has counted on one thing - that the people can't easily talk to each other on a global scale. They have to get their information through government or official channels. Even mass media isn't always free enough, for it reports that which the government reports. Even a free society tends to bias itself according to the bias of the times. However, when you can have Human Beings talking to each other all at once, all over the planet without government control, it all changes, for there is open revelation of truth.

Democracy itself will change and you're going to see it soon. The hold-outs, the few countries I have mentioned in the past, are doomed unless they recalibrate. They're doomed to be the same as they have been and won't be able to exist as they are now with everyone changing around them.

I mentioned North Korea in the past. Give it time. Right now, the young man is under the control of his father's advisors. But when they're gone, you will see something different, should he survive. Don't judge him yet, for he is being controlled.

In government, if you're entire voting base has the ability to talk to itself without restriction and comes up with opinions by itself without restriction, it behooves a politician to be aware and listen to them. This will change what politicians will do. It will change the way things work in government. Don't be surprised when some day a whole nation can vote all at once in a very unusual way. Gone will be the old systems where you used to count on horseback riders to report in from faraway places. Some of you know what I am talking about. Government will change. The systems around you, both dark and light, will change. You're going to start seeing something else, too, so let's change the subject and turn the page. …”

Coca-Cola: an unconventional remedy for persimmon stomach stones

Want China Times, Staff Reporter 2013-10-13

It is often advised that persimmon fruit should not be eaten on an empty stomach and a woman from Wuhan in central China's Hubei province found out the hard way after doctors found a persimmon stone the size of a bird's egg in her stomach.

The woman surnamed Huang, 24, began to suffer from a stomach ache the day after consuming several small persimmons on Oct. 7. After consulting with a doctor, she was surprised to find that she was prescribed drinking 500 ml of Coca-Cola twice a day. Three days later, Huang returned to the hospital and to her astonishment, the stone was no longer there.

"Patients suffering from stomach stones tend to increase in number during the persimmon harvest season in autumn," said Huang's doctor, Jiang Qihong. He added that Huang was the third patient to be treated with the condition this month. Discussing the unusual treatment of Coca-Cola, he said that the drink is only effective with younger patients. "The cure of the problem with the non-conventional method shows that Ms Huang still has a dynamic stomach," said Jiang.

Jiang explained that people who consume large amounts of persimmons take in excessive amounts of tannin and pectin, which would interact with stomach acid leading to the formation of a stone. Coca-Cola contains lemon acid and sodium bicarbonate, which together can dissolve a stomach stone layer by layer, a function facilitated by the inflation of stomach by large amount of carbon dioxide deriving from cola. He warned, however, that patients suffering from ulcers, heart problems, and diabetes must first seek guidance from their local physicians before undergoing this particular treatment.

Liao Jiazhi, a doctor at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, said that the unusual prescription has been in use following publication of a thesis by a Greek doctor surnamed Ladas in 2002. It is used mainly in treating plant-oriented stomach stones and the success rate reaches only 23.5%, although the consumption of cola can make stomach stones more vulnerable to pulverizing treatment using gastroscopy. Liao said that in some cases stomach stones can be treated with the assistance of gastroscopy, avoiding any possible side effect of the cola prescription, such as leftover pieces of stone attached to the inner wall of intestines.

Doctors note that stomach stones are formed mainly from the intake of plant ingredients including large amount of persimmon fruit, hair, or minerals, leading to the formation of alien objects inside the organ.

project in Wuxi. (Internet Photo)

Amway, the American direct-selling company that markets health, beauty and home care products, announced that it will begin construction of the world's first Nutrilite botanical research center in Wuxi in eastern China's Jiangsu province to make products targeting the multi-billion Chinese market.

The company will invest up to US$25 million in this center to study the possibilities of combining western biotechnology with traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, and roll out new products targeting Chinese consumers.

Chen Jia, deputy CEO of Amway's China Research and Development branch, said that China is already the company's biggest market and the sales for health food is still growing fast due to the government's help in promotion.

Amway registered 50 billion yuan (US$8.2 billion) sales in 2006, which amounted to 80 billion yuan (US$13.1 billion) in 2008. Its sales currently exceed 100 billion yuan (US$16.3 billion) and the figure is expected to triple in the coming five years, Chen said.

The first stage of investment will involve US$25 million for a processing plant on 700 acres of land in Wuxi. This will include a laboratory and an experimental farm, with both units scheduled to begin operations in 2015. Meanwhile, the center will not only facilitate further research into Chinese medicinal herbs, but the general public will also be able to visit and experience the company's products, Chen said.

Alzheimer's breakthrough: Cure or hype?

BBC News, By James Gallagher, Health and science reporter, 10 October 2013

Related Stories

If you regularly walk past a newspaper stand, then "Alzheimer's cure" or "Major Alzheimer's breakthrough" headlines will be a familiar sight. And here we are again.

UK researchers have, for the first time, used a chemical to prevent the death of brain tissue in a neurodegenerative disease.

The Times went with Cure for Alzheimer's "within reach" on its front page, the Independent had Scientists hail historic breakthrough in war against Alzheimer's, and my BBC News website article used the headline Alzheimer's findis "turning point".

One major difference this time is that sensible, cautious scientists are suggesting the latest discovery could be one for the history books.

Nearly every report contains this quote from Prof Roger Morris, at King's College London: "This finding, I suspect, will be judged by history as a turning point in the search for medicines to control and prevent Alzheimer's disease."

So what is it about the latest study that generates a rare level of excitement? And is a cure really on the cards?

Significant moment

The prime source of excitement is that a chemical has stopped the death of brain cells, in a living brain, that would have otherwise died due to a neurodegenerative disease.

This is a first and a significant one. When I interviewed Prof Morris on Wednesday night, he used the word "landmark" repeatedly.

In the Medical Research Council study, the mice had prion disease, similar to the human form of mad cow disease. Within eight weeks, their brains deteriorated so badly that memory and movement were noticeably affected. By the 12th week, the mice were dead.

But when the same infected animals were given a "drug-like compound", they survived the 12 weeks with no sign of the brain dying. The chemical also caused side-effects including weight loss and diabetes.

The second tier of excitement comes from the potential implications.

The chemical helps the brain cope with producing broken proteins. In Parkinson's the alpha-synuclein protein goes wrong, in Alzheimer's it's amyloid and tau, in Huntington's it's the Huntingtin protein.

The brain's response to all of these diseases is to shut down protein production, but this eventually kills brain cells. The chemical helps brain cells ignore the broken proteins, keep functioning and stay alive.

In the past, research on neurodegenerative diseases has focused on what is unique to that condition. This approach looks at what is common to all of them and if it really does work, then it raises the prospect of a single drug to cure or prevent nearly all forms of neurodegeneration. Another reason for excitement.

Lead researcher Prof Giovanna Mallucci said: "If it stops brain degeneration in its tracks, it will halt disease in people who have already got it. And if we can detect early disease, it will prevent a lot of degeneration.

"The hope is to arrest the process of brain cell death, and that's what's so exciting."

So where's the cure?

It's worth emphasising the precise findings of the study - a toxic chemical, which the researchers will not even call a drug, halts the death of brain cells in mice with prion disease.

Clearly this is not a cure, but it points the way to one. It gives drugs companies and scientists something to work with.

A section of brain with Alzheimer's disease on
the left shows the marked loss of brain cells
That process will take time, probably more than a decade, with no guarantee of success at the end.

And the recent history of medical research is littered with examples of drugs that looked promising in mice, but were a bitter disappointment when tested in people.

This chemical works in a mouse brain of 75 million neurons. A more complex human brain built from 85 billion neurons is a far different challenge.

Dr Simon Ridley, the head of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, told the BBC patients would be facing a long wait.

"I'm afraid it's far longer than any of us would like," he said.

"I think there are many people who'd be desperate for any news of new treatments, which they would like to take today.

"I think at this stage we could be looking at a decade before we'll know whether this will be effective."

This study is certainly exciting scientifically. But it might take until 2023 to see whether it truly deserves its place in the history books.

Kryon Q&A

Question: Dearest Kryon: I've read the question and answer on people with diseases of the mind - for example, Alzheimers and dementia. But I have more questions. You say that people have chosen this path and that the lessons are for us. As I work with these people, I'm wondering if there is any stage where there could be a reversal of the condition, and if so, with what methods? The people in the hostel are so drugged up, and there's a mind-set with the authorities that no "alternate" therapies work - although they're using colored lights. (Sadly, the diversional therapist told me she doesn't know what color therapy is.)

From a spiritual point of view, what is the best way to work with these people - talk to them as though they were normal, or go along with their imaginings? I've been told that they need to be kept quiet, especially toward evening. However, I've found that with one woman who mostly paces saying very little, the more childlike I am (dancing and singing makes her happy), the more she talks. I could go on and on - could you please enlighten me further?

Answer: I will answer the second part first. Love those who are in this condition. Find out what makes them smile... and then make them smile. The best you can do in a facilitation of this condition is to somehow create joy. Even in their confusion they can laugh at situations and be creative. They'll also remember you better as the one who creates this emotion. Each is very different, but in general, try to find their "happy" button and push it as often as you can. They will remember that.

Right now you're perched upon some important discoveries that will be able to reverse these conditions to a large degree. But just as the paraplegic who regains their nerve connections must than relearn how to walk, suffering much pain, there will be this attribute with a regeneration of the mind. Even if new cells are created, they won't necessarily have the old memories, but they can be trained to be healthy and be ready for new memories.

So someday these will have the ability to halt the progress of the degeneration of cells that are being taken, and instead grow new pathways around them. Some will be able to "reconnect" to certain kinds of memories (like recognition) but will have to relearn what the association of recognition actually means. So history and events might have to be studied and relearned... sometimes even things like reading, also. The pain will be that the individual will regain mental health and will realize exactly what has happened.

Your stem-cell research is very important, and you're reaching a point where you'll be able to use birth cells that aren't embryonic, but every bit as potent for research... thereby sidestepping all moral issues. Look for this in the next few years.

International mercury agreement signed at Minamata

Deutsche Welle, 10 October 2013

A global treaty to control the use and trade of heavy metal mercury has been adopted at an international UN-organized conference in Japan. It is the world's first legally binding agreement on the toxic substance.

Delegates from some 140 countries and territories on Thursday signed the United Nations Minamata Convention on Mercury, which aims to curb health and environmental damage caused by the highly toxic metal.

The treaty was named after and signed in the Japanese city of Minamata, where thousands of people fell ill in the 1950s and 1960s as a result of industrial emissions of the toxic substance. Around 2,000 people in the city have since died from the illness, contracted from ingesting large amounts of mercury from fish and shellfish taken from polluted waters.

The disease they developed is now known as Minamata disease. Mercury poisoning causes damage to the immune system and disorders of the brain and nervous system.

The treaty will take effect 90 days after its ratification by 50 countries, a process which the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) expects to take three to four years.

Among other things, the treaty envisages the phasing out of many products, including mercury thermometers, by 2020. It also gives governments 15 years to end all mercury mining.

However, environmental groups have criticized the fact that the treaty fails to address the use of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining, which directly threatens the health of many miners, including child laborers, in several developing countries.

UNEP has estimated that the cost of health and environmental damage caused by exposure to mercury can be set at $22 billion (16.26 billion euros). In a report entitled "Global Chemicals Outlook" published last year, it warned that the growing use of chemicals, especially in developing countries, where adequate safeguards do not exist, was increasingly damaging people's health and the environment.

EU Parliament approves stricter legislation on tobacco market

Deutsche Welle, 8 October 2013

European lawmakers have approved sweeping new regulations to curb smoking. The mandate includes imposing bigger warnings on cigarette packs, banning most flavorings and increasing regulation of electronic cigarettes.

The European Parliament voted Tuesday in Strasbourg for stricter rules on smoking regulations and tobacco marketing, after months of bitter debate.

Under the new EU regulation, mandatory warnings would take up to 75 percent of tobacco packaging and be more prominent, including gruesome pictorials in order to discourage potential smokers. It also aims to stop young people from taking up smoking by increasing regulation on cigarettes featuring flavors such as menthol or fruit aromas.

Another big change will be stricter conditions for electronic cigarettes, which vaporize a nicotine-containing liquid. The battery-operated products look like real cigarettes are often marketed as a less harmful alternative to tobacco.

European Union members had already agreed in June to stricter rules for tobacco products. Now, Parliament must negotiate with each EU member state's government on certain details before the rules can enter into force.

Once that process is completed, the governments will have two years to adopt the directive into national law, therefore the new regulation is not expected to be put in place before 2016.

Tobacco lobbyists have criticized the regulation as disproportionate and limiting consumer freedom, while European officials advocate the benefits to public health.

Over the past decade, smoking bans in public, limits on tobacco firms' advertising and other measures have seen the number of smokers fall from about 40 percent of the 28-nation bloc's 500 million citizens to 28 percent today.

However, treatment of smoke-related diseases costs about 25 billion euros ($34 billion) a year, and the EU estimates there are around 700,000 smoking-related deaths across the European Union.

2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to Südhof, Rothman and Schekman

Deutsche Welle, 7 October 2013

The Nobel season has kicked off with the awarding of the prize for physiology or medicine. This year's laureates are Thomas C. Südhof from Germany, and the US duo James E. Rothman and Randy W. Schekman.

"Through their discoveries, Rothman, Schekman and Südhof have revealed the exquisitely precise control system for the transport and delivery of cellular cargo," the Nobel Assembly at Sweden's Karolinska Institute said in a statement when awarding the prize.

For example, their research sheds light on how insulin is manufactured and released into the blood at the right place at the right time, the Nobel committee said.

It said the laureates' work deepened understanding of how disruptions in the transport of cells contribute to neurological diseases, diabetes and immunological disorders.

All three laureates work at US universities. Südhof joined Stanford University in 2008, Rothman is a professor at Yale University, and Schekman is at the University of Berkeley, California.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is the first of the Nobel prizes awarded each year. This week will also see the awarding of the Nobel Prizes for physics on Tuesday, and for chemistry on Wednesday.

The Swedish Academy, which makes the annual decision on who receives the Literature Prize, announced on Monday that the winner will be disclosed on Thursday, as had been widely expected.

Nobel highlight

The season culminates in the awarding of the Nobel Peace Price on Friday, October 11, in Oslo, Norway. A record 259 nominations have been submitted for this year's prize.

Among the people widely mentioned as possible laureates is Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who survived being shot in the head last year by the Taliban for championing education for girls.

Last year's winner was not a person, but an entity: the European Union, which received the prize in recognition of its achievements in bringing about reconciliation and integration in Europe.

Extra prize

The Nobel season will end on October 14 with the presentation of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, a prize not originally established by the will of the award's founder, Alfred Nobel. This prize was introduced in 1968 by the Swedish central bank, the Sveriges Riksbank, in memory of Nobel, an industrialist who invented dynamite.

All the prizes are traditionally presented to the winners in a ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). Laureates receive a diploma, medal and around eight million Swedish kronor (920,000 euros, $1.25 million).

The Nobel Prizes were established in Nobel's will in 1895 and are widely seen as his attempt to be remembered by posterity for something more than an invention that has caused so much destruction. The prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace were first awarded in 1901.

US health reform launches despite shutdown

Washington (AFP) - A key stage of President Barack Obama's drive to offer cheaper health insurance to millions of Americans opened Tuesday despite a government shutdown but technical glitches blocked many users from signing up.

Republican opposition to the plan forced the US government to close its doors and kept hundreds of thousands of workers home without pay, but administration officials vowed health reform would forge ahead.

Known widely as "Obamacare," the Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress and signed by Obama in 2010, on the promise of helping 30 million uninsured people get health care coverage.

Despite its ambitions to revolutionize American health care, the plan is not free and will not be able to cover tens of millions of people in America who lack full insurance coverage for health care.

Advocates have touted it as a major step forward, while opponents like Republican House speaker John Boehner have insisted the law "is not ready for prime-time."

Indeed, in the first few hours of Tuesday, the new health insurance exchanges that were to begin enrolling people via the website healthcare.gov were jammed.

Frustrated users flocked to Twitter to complain that healthcare.gov and others linked to the exchanges were not working.

An attempt by an AFP reporter to check the prices offered in Virginia resulted in the message: "Important: Your account couldnt [sic] be created at this time. The system is unavailable."

The NY State of Health site said that "overwhelming interest" had led to two million visits in the first two hours of the launch, and asked people to come back later if they had been unable to log in.

"Today is launch day for Obamacare and so far it's like a giant online traffic jam on the first day of summer vacation," said analyst Jeff Kagan.

"No one knew what to expect, but chaos is what we have."

US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius had pleaded for patience in the run-up to October 1.

She expressed the hope that consumers would give the government "the same slack as they give Apple" when the computer giant releases new technologies.

"Today’s launch begins a new day when health care coverage will be more accessible and affordable than ever before,” Sebelius said in a statement issued early Tuesday.

About seven million Americans are expected to seek coverage by 2014, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The policies available on the health exchanges range in price according to a person's income, location, family size and the level of coverage on a scale of bronze, silver, gold or platinum.

All Americans must sign up for some kind of health insurance by January 1 or face a fine.

The government said last week there will be around 53 plans to choose from in the federally-facilitated marketplace.

"The vast majority will have a choice of at least two different health insurance companies -- usually more," said a statement from Health and Human Services.

"Nearly six in ten uninsured Americans could get insurance for $100 or less, with financial assistance and expanded access to Medicaid."

Most Americans have health insurance -- 82.6 percent according a July report from the Department of Commerce based on data from the 2010 Census.

About half get it through their employer, and about 30 percent are enrolled in government programs like Medicare, mainly for seniors, and Medicaid, which covers the poor and disabled.

That leaves 17.4 percent of Americans uninsured, or about 53 million people.

An analysis in the journal Health Affairs earlier this year projected that around 30 million Americans will still not get health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

Those gaps are due in part to the Supreme Court's decision to allow some states to opt out of expanding Medicaid programs, coupled with a cut in funding under the reform plan to safety-net hospitals.

The Affordable Care Act "will leave tens of millions uncovered. It will do little to alter racial disparities in coverage," said the Health Affairs report published in June.

"The ACA, whatever its merits, will fall well short of its stated goal of providing affordable care for all Americans."

Opposition to President Obama and the Transition to Uncorrupted Governments - New

goldenageofgaia.comSteve BeckowAn Hour with an Angel, September 30, 2013, with Archangel Michael

"THE BRIDGE OF SWORDS" – Sep 29, 2012 (Kryon channeled by Lee Carroll) (Subjects: ... I'm in Canada and I know it, but I will tell those listening and reading in the American audience the following: Get ready! Because there are some institutions that are yet to fall, ones that don't have integrity and that could never be helped with a bail out. Again, we tell you the biggest one is big pharma, and we told you that before. It's inevitable. If not now, then in a decade. It's inevitable and they will fight to stay alive and they will not be crossing the bridge. For on the other side of the bridge is a new way, not just for medicine but for care. ....) - (Text Version)
