Hunan woman faces huge medical costs for preterm quadruplets

A woman from Chenzhou in south-central China's Hunan province delivered preterm quadruplets on Aug. 28 and now has hefty medical fees to worry about, reports local online news outlet xxcb.cn.

Zhong Yaxiang grew up in a poor farming family before marrying Cao Yaoming, her junior high school classmate. The couple moved to Shenzhen this year to find higher-paid work in factories. Zhong then discovered she was pregnant.

She at first thought she was expecting triplets but found out six months into the pregnancy that it was in fact quadruplets. Zhong went to a number of different hospitals for prenatal examinations and finally gave birth in the early morning of Aug. 28 in the hospital in Chenzhou.

The babies, who were born prematurely, are now in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. Zhong said that she is nervous about being able to pay for her babies' treatment, which costs 5,000 yuan (US$790) a day. "The care they need is not going to be cheap and will probably cost 200,000 yuan (US$31,500) for us," she said.

Her husband Cao said they don't know where to turn for cash as they have already borrowed at least 20,000 yuan (US$3,150) from relatives. The local government had given them 10,000 yuan (US$1,570) as well. Their family members are looking for ways to raise the money for the family's newest additions.

The Hague (AFP) - A Dutch study aims to get a grip on violence in prisons by prescribing vitamins and minerals for inmates with anger management issues, justice officials said Wednesday.

Starting early next year prisoners at seven institutions who show violent tendencies will receive added vitamins, minerals and fish oil, the justice ministry said.

"Two previous experiments have shown that aggressive prisoners who receive food supplements show less aggression than those who do not," said Ap Zaalberg, a researcher at the ministry.

A British study carried out in the late 1990s showed violent incidents in prison dropping by at least a quarter after supplements were added to prison food, Zaalberg told AFP.

A similar study of 200 prisoners in the Netherlands in 2006-2007 showed a drop of 34 percent in incidents, Dutch daily De Volkskrant recently reported.

"We are now checking whether the addition of food supplements can be introduced in prisons as common practice, including as a form of treatment for aggression," said Zaalberg.

Boys and men at five prisons and two youth detention centres, aged from 12 to "quite old", would take part in the study, he said, adding "the aspect they'll have in common are anger issues."

Aggression is a feature of prison life in many countries.

Roughly a quarter of prison workers in the Netherlands experience threatening behaviour by inmates, De Volkskrant reported.

Food scientists at Wageningen University near Utrecht however said although supplements could have a positive effect, Dutch prisons should instead focus on improving prison cooking.

A positive effect on prisoners "really starts in the kitchen," nutritional scientist Frans Kok told NOS public broadcaster.

Pope Francis makes marriage annulment simpler and free

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - Pope Francis on Tuesday (Sept 8) made it easier, quicker and free for Catholics to have their marriages annulled under reforms regarded with suspicion by conservatives who fear he may be opening the door to Church-approved divorce.

Details of changes to a system that critics including Francis himself had attacked as needlessly bureaucratic, expensive and unfair were unveiled Tuesday with the publication of a papal letter on the issue to Catholic churches across the world.

In it, the Argentinian pontiff says annulments will henceforth require only one decision rather than having to be approved by two church tribunals, as currently.

A streamlined procedure is to be introduced with most cases to be handled by individual bishops rather than subject to a hearings process.

Appeals to a Vatican court against individual annulments will still be possible but will become the exception not the rule.

The Pope's letter follows a year-long review by experts in canon, or religious, law. It also asks bishops conferences to ensure there are no costs involved in the process of securing an annulment.

While Francis is seeking to democratise the procedure in a way that would appear to make an increase in the number of annulments likely, his letter does not amend the exceptional conditions under which they can be granted.

In his letter, he strongly reaffirms the principle of the indissolubility of marriage while highlighting the "enormous number of believers" for whom annulment is currently not an option for various reasons.

Although the notion of marriage being for life is one of the fundamental tenets of the Catholic faith, divorce has become commonplace among believers across much of the industrialised world.

Church doctrine allows for unions to be cancelled - effectively declared to have never existed - when the marriage is judged to have been fundamentally flawed from the outset.

Possible justifications for reaching this conclusion include non-consummation of the marriage, one or both partners having entered into it without the intention of staying in the relationship, or one of the partners having no desire to have children.

Alcohol and drug dependency can also be taken into consideration.

In practice, access to the annulment procedure currently varies widely.

There is virtually no provision for it in many dioceses in the developing world while many ordinary Catholics in wealthier countries simply don't understand the complex procedures or cannot afford expert legal help to guide them through them.

For centuries there has been a perception that annulments are more easily obtained by the wealthy and powerful.

England's King Henry VIII secured two and it was the Vatican's refusal of a third that led to the creation of the Church of England in the 16th Century.

In one of the most high-profile recent cases, Princess Caroline of Monaco obtained the annulment of her first marriage, to Frenchman Philippe Junot, in 1992, leaving her free to remarry in the Church.

There was also controversy in 2006 when Australian actress Nicole Kidman married Keith Urban in a Sydney church following her divorce from Tom Cruise.

Kidman was reported at the time to have secured an annulment but it later emerged that the Church in Australia had simply confirmed that it did not recognise her first marriage because it had been conducted in Cruise's Church of Scientology.

Without an annulment, a Catholic who divorces and remarries is deemed to be living in sin and is unable to take communion.

Critics say this exclusion of the divorced from the Church's holiest sacrament is cruel and unfair. Why, they argue, should a murderer who confesses his sins be able to take communion while a woman who seeks a divorce to escape a violent relationship cannot.

The status of divorcees and the Church's attitude to homosexual believers and unmarried cohabiting couples are among questions being considered as part of an ongoing review of Catholic teaching on the family.

Bishops from around the world are due in Rome in October for a synod that will seek to reach a consensus on these vexed issues before Francis decides what, if any, reforms will be made.

The Dutch pharmacists’ association KNMP has developed a range of 24 icons to help people who cannot read understand how to take their medicine. 

The icons range from ‘take on an empty stomach’ to ‘don’t drive’. The organisation says one in nine adults in the Netherlands has difficulty reading and 25% have problems with reading the instructions for use included with medicines. 

The KNMP has also launched a radio and online advertising campaign to encourage people to ask if they don’t understand how to take medicine.

These people are more likely to end up in hospital than people who can read and write,’ chairman Gerben Klein Nulent told broadcaster Nos. ‘We want to do something about this.’ 

Since January 1, dispensing chemists must talk to first-time patients about what the patient already knows about the medicine, the effects and side effects to be expected and whether the patient has understood what has been said. 

Prior to the introduction of the new rules, the cost of an explanation was included in the price of the medicine. It is now listed separately and costs on average €6. Hundreds of people have complained about the fees to their health insurers and the consumers’ association Consumentenbond.

Lydia beats world's top geniuses on test

LYDIA Sebastian has outwitted geniuses Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking in an IQ test she described as “easy”.

The talented 12-year-old from Langham sat the famous Mensa paper during her school summer holidays, after nagging mum Erika for a year. 

Her proud parents couldn’t believe it when the result came back showing a score of 162.

It is the top score anyone can achieve who sits the Cattrall III B paper – physicists Einstein and Hawking both scored 160. 

Lydia said: “At first, I was really nervous, but as I started, it was much easier than I expected it to be and then I relaxed.”

Lydia, who is about to go into her second year at Colchester County High School for Girls, said the paper challenged her language skills, including analogies, definitions and her sense of logic.

Lydia, who has read all seven of the Harry Potter book series three times, said she completed the paper with minutes to spare at the sitting at London’s Birkbeck College.

She was mainly surrounded by grown ups hoping to qualify for Mensa membership.

Proud dad Arun, a radiologist at Colchester General Hospital, said: “She had looked at the websites for the IQ tests herself and had shown an interest in them and talked to my wife about them, so she said ‘why don’t you go ahead with them?

“She was talking about it for over a year.

“We got the results on Friday.

When I heard she had the maximum possible mark, I was overwhelmed and so was my wife.

“Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking got an IQ of 160. To be honest, I didn’t really believe it.”

Lydia’s parents knew their only child, who has been playing the violin since four, was gifted from the start.

Mr Sebastian added: “She started talking when she was really young, when she was six-months-old.

“At the time I was a trainee doctor and my wife was studying chemistry and I was away at the weekends.

     

She used to say a few words to me on the phone.”

Maths whizz Lydia said the nature of the tests meant she was unable to prepare for them, adding: “I gave it my best shot really.”

Some will point their fingers at you and say, “Don't you remember? I was your mum in another life.” That's a bit disconcerting, isn't it?

I want you to remember one of the premises of incarnation, the one that we have given you over and over. You incarnate in family groups. There's a reason for this, so there is comfort and joy. It's so you don't have to learn the energy of each related person, all over again, each time. The energies of the family stay together and you can accomplish more that way. There's always a benevolent reason for these things. Every single attribute of the esoteric system of life, whether it's your grids or reincarnation, is benevolent. Did you hear that? It's a beautiful system, and not random. It's not about judgment; it's not about punishment. It is, instead, about the love of God for you, and what I'm about to tell you is what is changing is energy.

Akashic Acuity

So we have established that you are moving into this new radiation, and we have established that it intersects the sun. The sun blasts your magnetic field with it (via the solar wind) and the magnetic field talks to your DNA. Suddenly, there is the potential some of your DNA is being unlocked. The attributes of unlocking Akashic acuity will help you to remember who you've been. Now, with this remembrance comes energy - not about who you were, but rather it gives you the energy of what you did. I don't mean physically; I mean energetically and mentally. Old souls carry with them experience. When you look into the eyes of a child, you're going to see wisdom just waiting to break out. Dear ones, these children are different. They are not going to go through what you did! They have a whole new set of issues, and most of their issues are trying to navigate the old issues you create for them!

There's something we brought up in a former channelling called the wisdom factor. Now, the wisdom factor is caused by Akashic acuity. After living Human life over and over, you start remembering the wisdom that you have gained through these past lifetimes. You don't necessarily remember who you were, but rather the fact that you were at all and the experiences you had. Imagine a child coming into the planet knowing how to read? Imagine a child coming into the planet knowing not to touch something hot? Where did it come from? You're going to see more of this, and a feeling of "been there, done that".

Akashic acuity is remembrance of experience during past lifetimes. As the child grows, that remembrance becomes pure wisdom. As the child starts to awaken and the pineal opens, something else happens. The grid starts talking to the child through the DNA, and in the grid is also the information from the time capsules we spoke about in past channellings. The time capsules start feeding the planet with increased wisdom and knowledge. You don't have to reincarnate to awaken even further! Perhaps you come in knowing how to play the piano, just waiting for your hands to get big enough to do what you used to do... without any lessons. How do you explain that, dear ones? The answer is that all this is contained in the dynamic quantum instruction sets of your DNA... the part you never talk to it. .."

Answer: Dear Human, don’t get bogged within your linearity in these things. You wish to compartmentalize everything, and thereby feel more comfortable in your understanding. Know this: All children being born on the planet have strong potential to be of the Indigo consciousness. Within that group there are many parts and attributes. What you have called a “Star Child” is a type of Indigo. The same goes for the “Crystal Children.”

Years ago we identified a new breed of Human that was slowly being introduced to earth. Now they are so plentiful that many are beginning to notice and categorize them. Our admonition is NOT to, but we know that sometimes make you feel better to do so. Another name for these “Star Children” are the Interdimensional or even the Interplanetary, if you wish.

As far as the potential of those born before or during the 1960’s: The answer is yes, but with a qualification. The “pure” Indigo Children have really only been arriving slowly for the past 25 or 30 years, but there are many who have what we call an “Indigo overlay.” This is Human who fits the generalizations, but without some of the absolutes that are buried in what you call the DNA that really qualify this new Human experience.

Monrovia (AFP) - The World Health Organization said on Thursday that Ebola-ravaged Liberia was once again free of the deadly virus, prompting muted celebrations in the capital Monrovia.

The west African nation, where thousands died at the height of the epidemic last year, has already been declared Ebola-free once before, in May, only to see the fever resurface six weeks later.

"WHO declares Liberia free of Ebola virus transmission in the human population," the UN health agency said in a statement.

It hailed Liberia's "successful response" to the recent re-emergence of Ebola, when six people were infected, including two who died.

"Liberia's ability to effectively respond to the outbreak of Ebola virus disease is due to intensified vigilance and rapid response by the government and multiple partners," WHO said.

Liberia was long the hardest hit in the west African Ebola outbreak that began in December 2013 and which infected more than 28,000 people and claimed more than 11,000 lives mainly in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

More than 10,500 of those infections and 4,800 of the deaths occurred in Liberia.

Radio and television lunchtime bulletins carrying the development were greeted with muted celebration in Monrovia, a chaotic city of a million people where bodies piled up the streets at the outbreak's peak from August to December.

'Happy, and worried'

"I am happy, very happy to hear that pronouncement by the WHO but this is not the first time. So I am happy -- and worried," said motorist Mary Grants, 56.

"I am worried because the experts told us that there will always be some re-occurrence of this virus, though it may not be like the first."

Ebola is spread among humans via the bodily fluids of recently deceased victims and carriers showing symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhoea and -- in the worst cases -- massive internal and external bleeding.

A country is considered free of human-to-human transmission once two 21-day incubation periods have passed since the last known case tested negative for a second time.

But experts warn that even after 42 days the danger is not over, considering that some Ebola cases are still surfacing in neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The Ebola virus has been found lingering in the semen of male survivors many months after they test negative.

Francis Karteh, of Liberia's Ebola management department, warned that while the Ebola-free announcement was a cause for celebration, complacency could not be allowed to creep in and the fight against the virus was "not yet over".

"As long as there is one person with Ebola in our region Ebola is still a threat," he told AFP.

"The Ministry of Health and its partners will continue monitoring Liberia's borders and rebuilding the healthcare system to assure that Liberians remain safe."

Vatican City (AFP) - Pope Francis on Tuesday called on priests to pardon women who have abortions during the upcoming Jubilee year -- overruling hardline traditionalists within the Catholic Church.

"I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness," he said.

In a message outlining special measures for the Jubilee year starting in December, Francis said he knew that while "abortion is experienced by some with a superficial awareness" many others "believe that they have no other option".

The Argentine pontiff said he was "well aware of the pressure" that some women were under to abort, adding that he had "met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonising and painful decision".

Abortion is considered a particularly serious sin and is punishable under Canon law by excommunication, by which those guilty are expelled from the Church and considered to be condemned to Hell in the afterlife.

Queues for forgiveness?

Catholics for Choice, a US-based pro-choice organization, said this was another positive example of Francis trying to bridge the gulf "between what the hierarchy says and what ordinary Catholics really do".

"However, despite what Pope Francis has said, I do not believe that Catholic women will be queueing up to ask for forgiveness," the organisation's president Jon O'Brien said in a statement.

And limiting the period of forgiveness to one year "suggests that he still has a blind spot when it comes to women and what they want".

The Vatican had already said in May that abortion would be included among the sins pardonable during the Jubilee, but the original plan had been for a certain, limited number of priests to have the power to forgive.

Bishops are already able to authorise priests in their dioceses to forgive those who undergo or carry out abortions.

The hot-button topic has been the subject of increasingly fierce debate within the Church. In 2009 the Vatican drew heavy criticism after it supported a bishop who had excommunicated the mother and doctors of a nine-year-old girl who was given an abortion after her stepfather raped her.

Francis, 78, who has repeatedly urged the Church to show greater compassion, said priests should use "words of genuine welcome", as well as making sure those involved were aware of "the gravity of the sin committed".

O'Brien said the pope's message on abortion was likely "more for his brother bishops than Catholics in the pew".

'A daring double play'

In his message, Francis also reached out to the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), a break-away super-conservative group which refuses to recognize church reforms and has been accused of being mired in anti-Semitism.

Vatican expert John Allen, writing for Crux, said by putting measures which will please both liberals and conservatives alike in the same package, Francis had performed "a daring pastoral double play".

"Putting these two olive branches into the same package could be seen as another effort by Francis at political equilibrium, reminiscent of his decision in April 2014 to beatify the late Popes John XXIII and John Paul II together, icons for the Catholic left and right respectively," he said.

The pontiff announced earlier this year a Jubilee year -- traditionally a time for remission and forgiveness -- which will run from December 8 to November 20 and be celebrated not only in the Vatican but in dioceses across the world.

To mark the Holy year, Francis also called for amnesty for prisoners in jails across the world who have repented.

"The Jubilee Year has always constituted an opportunity for great amnesty, which is intended to include the many people who, despite deserving punishment, have become conscious of the injustice they worked," he said.

Under Catholic tradition, pilgrims seeking forgiveness passed through holy doors present in four basilicas in Rome, which were usually kept walled shut, then opened for Jubilee years.

Francis extended the practice to the doors of all Cathedrals across the world.

For prison inmates, Francis said that praying "each time they cross the threshold of their cell" would "signify for them their passage through the Holy Door".

Question: Dear Kryon, thank you for the many communications you have given. They have been enlightening in many ways. I hope this is not a rude question, but it is a subject that I have not seen addressed in the collection of Questions and Answers. I want to know: What is the morality of stopping someone's new life in the physical plane, by abortion? And what is the karma to the person who helps to accomplish an abortion? I think it will depend on when a Human life begins. When life begins is a moment that is very important to those who oppose abortion and those who say it is allowable.

Do you have a decisive response to guide those who receive your words?

Answer: [from Lee Carroll] We have tried to "paint" Kryon into a corner on this many times, since it really is an important issue in our society. Kryon says this: "Human life actually begins when the intent of the entities involved in the planning session is to create it." It's not a biological answer, and it won't please either side.

This places it far before any kind of biological morality decision. Kryon has said that there is no judgement in the choice of Humans... including this one. When it occurs, there is also no horrible karmic payback. But there IS energy created that affects everyone around the event. Sometimes these lives come and go to create lessons for those involved, then these terminated lives return almost immediately, often within the next pregnancy (sometimes changing gender). If there is no next pregnancy, often it's in a very close family group.

God is not in a vacuum concerning these things, and often they are set-ups, and are executed with the agreement of all parties in advance. This is far different than our society wishes to believe. They want to paint a black and white answer to when life occurs, and set rules on what you can and cannot do with it. Instead, Kryon's answer gives honor and validity to the fact that you are not here by accident, and the things that take place in your lives are not random. Not to mention the fact that your free choice is the free choice of God (since you are a piece of God).

So we leave the biological cultural decisions for those who wish to make them, but we have heard the spiritual answers many times... that these things are far more than they appear, and are all part of our spiritual setups, and they are honored.

"... I want to define life for you - not biological life, but spiritual life. So for all those intellectuals, just hold on, for many won't like this. Spiritual life, as measured by Spirit, is when a Human has free choice. When is that? It's when they take their first breath. Not in utero. There will be those who will say, "That's wrong, that's wrong. The soul in the woman's body is alive!" Just wait. I'm talking about spiritually. That which Spirit sees, and it's when you come from the other side of the veil and take your first breath.

A child with the mother has no free choice. That child is linked to the choice of the mother until it is born. It is, indeed, a soul in preparation for free choice, and there are many attributes that are spiritual that we have discussed before about how that soul reacts. But now I'm discussing life with polarity [duality], free choice.

But let's discuss that "child inside" for a moment, for there is a process I want you to know about. I want to talk about 240 days into the pregnancy. At about that time, the child has perfect DNA. It hasn't taken its first breath. The DNA hasn't measured the energy of the planet yet, since it is contained. Did you realize that? Inside the womb is a perfect child. The child's DNA has all the attributes of the Akash and also the parent, but it's different in a way you have not been told. The DNA is 100% as designed.

The quantum instructions within the DNA are all talking to the biology of the child,, getting ready for the first breath. ..."

People who lack sleep are more likely to catch colds

Miami (AFP) - People who do not get enough sleep are four times more likely than their well-rested counterparts to catch a cold, US researchers said Monday.

The findings in the journal Sleep are based on a study of 164 volunteers who allowed themselves to be exposed to the cold virus by researchers who were also tracking their sleep habits.

First, the subjects underwent health screenings and completed questionnaires so researchers could understand factors such as stress, temperament, and alcohol and cigarette use.

Their sleep habits were measured for one week prior to the beginning of the study, which required them to stay in a hotel room in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area.

Once sequestered in the hotel, researchers administered the cold virus via nasal drops and monitored the volunteers for a week, collecting daily mucus samples to see if the virus had taken hold.

The results showed that those who had slept less than six hours a night during the week leading up to the study were 4.2 times more likely to catch the cold compared to those who got more than seven hours of sleep.

Those who slept less than five hours were 4.5 times more likely to get sick.

"Short sleep was more important than any other factor in predicting subjects' likelihood of catching cold," said Aric Prather, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and lead author of the study.

"It didn't matter how old people were, their stress levels, their race, education or income. It didn't matter if they were a smoker. With all those things taken into account, statistically sleep still carried the day."

Previous studies have linked lack of sleep to chronic illness, premature death, susceptibility to disease, car crashes, industrial disasters and medical errors.

One in five Americans gets less than six hours of sleep on the average work night, according to a 2013 survey by the National Sleep Foundation.

Pension fund in China not for stock market bail-out: official

Allowing China's pension fund to invest in the stock market was not intended as a bail out, but to create long-term and stable returns, said the vice minister of human resources and social security on Friday.

The change will eventually have a positive effect on China's real economy and support a healthy capital market, but the core purpose is to gain long-term and stable yields for the fund, vice minister You Jun said at a press conference.

The fund's management must prioritize safety, and the timing of the fund's entry into the stock market will be decided by the market, You added.

The State Council finalized guidelines on Sunday allowing the pension fund to invest in new products, including the domestic stock market.

The guidelines allow the fund to invest in more than 20 financial products, including high-risk stocks and equities, as well as low-risk bank deposits and bonds, which diversify the investment risk, You said.

To minimize risks, the guideline restricts the maximum proportion of investment in stocks and equities to 30% of total net assets.

The fund will also participate in major projects and purchase shares in state-owned enterprises to gain long-term yields, he added.

Around 2 trillion yuan (US$330 billion) of the funds total assets can be invested, You said, adding that the amount will increase as the fund grows.

China's pension fund, which accounts for roughly 90% of the country's total social security fund pool, had net assets of 3.5 trillion yuan (US$547 billion) at the end of 2014.

The pension fund was previously parked in banks or invested in treasury bonds with low yields, provoking calls for change as China faces the challenge of caring for its growing elderly population.

The new policy came as China's stock markets continue to decline, beset by shrinking turnover and greater volatility. The key Shanghai index plunged more than 30% from its June peak, wiping out most of this year's gains.

"Market-oriented operation of the pension fund requires more market supervision by authorities," said You.

The National Council for Social Security Fund (SSF), a social security strategic reserve for China's future aging population, played an exemplary role in increasing the fund's investment returns. The SSF has had an average yearly return of 8.5% over the past 14 years as of 2014 and outpaces the consumer price index growth.

The SSF has a bigger investment scope than the pension fund and is allowed to invest in domestic and overseas stocks as well as fixed income assets.

In China, private urban employees pay for their pension before retirement and usually get a pension equal to about half of their final salary.

Dutch civil service pension fund APB has sold all its shares in pharmaceuticals company Mylan because of concerns that one of its products may be used in carrying out the death penalty in the US. 

According to news agency Reuters, European companies are banned from selling drugs for use in executions and the move by ABP is thought to have been followed by other Dutch pension funds. 

ABP spokesman Harmen Geers told Reuters the decision came after a nine-month dialogue with the company.

‘As the Dutch government and Dutch society as a whole renounced the death penalty a long time ago, we do not want Dutch pension money to be involved in that,’ he said.

The state prison in Virginia has confirmed it held stocks of a Mylan muscle relaxant  that can be used in executions. 

Mylan is a US company which moved its base to the Netherlands earlier this year to take advantage of tax breaks. According to news agency ANP, the Dutch government has already spoken to the company about its death penalty role.
