Beijing doctors remove dandelion growing in baby's ear

Doctors in Beijing's Tongzhou district have successfully removed a dandelion flower from the ear of a one-year-old baby girl. The flower was first discovered by the girl's mother after the baby had cried over an itchy ear, reports the state-run news agency Xinhua.

The girl, Ranran, is currently recovery from the surgery on Nov. 25. Her doctors said that the flower growing inside her left ear, which was about 2 cm long, could have led to serious issues if left untreated and could even have begun to grow into the brain stem.

Ranran's mother said "When she started scratching her ear, I checked and saw something but could not get it out." She told doctors that a seed had accidentally found its way into Ranran's left ear four months earlier.

The extremely rare case surprised doctors and nurses, who clarified that the flower was able to blossom in the warm and humid ear canal wall.

Rwanda turns to male circumcision for HIV/AIDS prevention

Male circumcision is increasingly being used in Africa to help halt the spread of HIV/AIDS. Surveys show the infection rate can fall by up to 60 percent. Rwanda has launched a new non-surgical form of circumcision.

"It didn't hurt, it wasn't bad at all," says Marc Karemangingo with a mixture of pride and embarrassment. The 18 year-old has just been circumcised. In an operation lasting just 15 minutes, doctors removed his foreskin. Marc is now standing outside the Military Hospital in the Rwandan capital Kigali. Behind him, an unobtrusive sign shows the way to the "Center for Male Circumcision." The young Rwandan was very scared before the operation. "But the doctor was very nice and chatted with me. It was done very well," he said.

Fewer HIV infections

Marc is one of 200,000 men in Rwanda who have undergone circumcision as part of a government program. That is not many when compared to the goal of two million which the government had set for the end of this year.

The program is managed by the state-run Rwanda Biomedical Center.

Dr Sabin Nsanzimana heads the HIV/AIDS department. "When we started this program, we were very ambitious," he said. Previous strategies had yielded meager results. Not least because it was not possible to measure condom use accurately. The effects of circumcision can be assessed more easily. There are also other advantages, Dr Nsanzimana says. "It is easy, not expensive and you don't need to repeat it."

2.9 percent of Rwandans are infected with HIV, that's three out of every hundred people. In contrast, the infection rate in Germany is below 0.1 percent, while in Botswana in southern Africa it is 23 percent. East African researchers discovered that the risk of contracting HIV is up to 60 percent less for a circumcised man when compared to his non-circumcised counterpart.

While circumcision does not rule out contracting AIDS, international organisations like UNAIDS and the World Health Organisation (WHO) regard circumcision as an effective weapon in the struggle to halt the spread of the disease.

It is also being promoted in Kenya and Uganda. In those countries, it is not yet clear by how much the the infection rate has been reduced. Scientists believe that circumcision alters the environment for microbes on the penis and this could make it difficult for viruses and bacteria to survive.

When the campaign began in Rwanda, only 13 percent of men were circumcised, most of them were Muslims. 90 percent of Rwandans are Catholic. "It took some time to persuade people that this has nothing to do with religion. It's about protection and prevention," Dr Nsnazimana told DW.

New method

In the meantime, the level of acceptance has increased. Men come to the health centers from all over the country. In Kigali's Military Hospital, an average of 25 men per day come to be circumcised. There are plans to increase the number to one thousand per week. This will be possible thanks to a new method of circumcision which can be carried out non-surgically. The magic word is "PrePex." It consists of two rings and an elastic band. Dr Leon Ngeruka, from Kigali's Military Hospital, explains how it works. "The inner ring is placed over the penis and the foreskin is puilled over it. An elastic ring made of plastic is then stretched over both to compress the skin. This blocks the flow of blood and the foreskin falls off about a week later."

Not a substitute for condoms

Circumcision should not be viewed as protection against unwanted pregnancies or sexually-transmitted diseases.

It is not "an invisible condom," Dr Nsanzimana warns. "Men come to us and ask if they still need to use a condom after circumcision." This is a new challenge, he told DW. "If you want to have male circumcision as a visa to do sexual things, it can't work. If you see male circumcision as total protection, then you are going to be infected more often."

To get the message across, men are counselled before and after being circumcised so that they are fully aware of what it means for their sexual future. For Marc Karemangingo, that future includes condoms. "Young people like me should be able to grow up without HIV/AIDS. We must use condoms in order to protect our lives," he said.

If you feel that you should honor a tradition, then do it. If not, then don't. It's not a spiritual or health issue any longer.

Be the boss of your own body and your own traditions. Follow what your spiritual intuition tells you is appropriate for your own spiritual path and health.

10 Scientific Blunders That Could Shake Your Faith in Science

The history of science teaches us to question what we think we know.

Some scientists who made great discoveries in history were ridiculed and dismissed by the scientific community at the time.

Some scientists who were way off the mark were celebrated; their theories were held as facts for decades or even centuries.

1.  Doctors Should Wash Their Hands

It seems obvious now, but Ignaz Semmelweis had a tough time convincing scientists and doctors 150 years ago that disease could be spread if doctors’ hands and tools were not cleaned.

He was ridiculed and rejected by the majority of his colleagues and superiors at the University of Vienna. He moved to Budapest and worked at a hospital there, slashing mortality rates to a record low by keeping things clean.

Harvard MD John Long Wilson writes of Semmelweis’s rejection: “His doctrine was opposed by powerful members of the academic hierarchy. … The damning evidence that they were themselves the remorseless messengers of death was a scarcely veiled threat to their pride and eminence.” 

2. Cheese Gives Birth to Mice

It was widely held until the 17th century that inanimate objects could produce living beings. The Encyclopedia Britannica gives an example: cheese and bread left in a dark corner were thought to produce mice—not attract mice, produce mice.

Similarly, decaying meat was thought to produce maggots.

Francesco Redi showed in the 17th century that meat does not produce maggots (flies lay eggs on the meat, producing maggots), by sealing some meat in a jar and leaving some exposed. The meat in the jar did not form maggots. 

3. Tobacco Will Cure Almost Any Ailment

Children were told to smoke tobacco in 1665 during the London plague, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. During the 16th century, tobacco was widely prescribed in Europe as a cure for many illnesses, including cancer. 

4. Germs Kill People

Many scientists could not accept that tiny little germs could cause diseases and kill people. Louis Pasteur was initially ridiculed for his theories about microbes. He proved they could be killed with heat, preventing disease.

He also showed that microbes are involved in the souring of wine and milk. The term “pasteurized milk” is named for him. 

5.  Fritz Zwicky Ridiculed by Colleagues ‘Missing 99 Percent of the Universe’

Fritz Zwicky developed the theory of dark matter in the 1930s. He was met with great skepticism and largely ignored for more than 40 years.

His descendants wrote a letter to Caltech’s journal of Engineering & Science in 2010, describing the reaction of the scientific community to Zwicky’s theory: “My grandfather identified an extravaganza of precedent-setting observations that were not understood by many benighted ignoramus of his time.

“Therefore, he no doubt invoked great animosity by telling his colleagues that they were missing 99 percent of the universe, and that they were only looking at the dust bunnies in front of the door.

“No conductor wants to be told he has lost his caboose.” 

6. If You’re Sick, Just Slit Your Veins

Bloodletting was immensely popular as a treatment for almost any ailment for centuries. It was endorsed by some doctors right up through to the 20th century.

Doctors—or barbers, who also somehow became responsible for performing this treatment—would cut patients and let blood drain until the patients would faint.

U.S. President George Washington died of bloodletting. He was being treated for a sore throat. He isn’t the only one. Doctors eventually realized the cure was killing many patients.

MedTech notes that today, bloodletting may still be effective in very particular circumstances. For example, it can help some people at risk of blood clots. 

7. Continental Drift

Alfred Wegener first hypothesized in a 1912 paper that continents had shifted on the Earth’s surface over the ages. The theory was met with widespread skepticism until new evidence emerged in the late 1950s and 1960s.

The theory was eventually accepted; it was incorporated into, and improved upon, by plate tectonics.

8. The Earth Revolves Around the Sun

The Ptolemaic understanding of the solar system held that Earth is at the center with the sun and planets revolving around it. This view was not simply related to physics; it placed emphasis on humankind’s spiritual significance in the cosmos.

In the 16th Century, Nicolaus Copernicus hypothesized the sun, not the Earth, is the center of the solar system.

Galileo Galilei agreed after studying space through his telescope, but he was condemned, largely because the Catholic Church held this view to be heretical. 

9. Mendel’s Genetics Ahead of His Time

Now known as the father of genetics, Gregor Mendel’s theories gained little interest from the scientists of his time. Mendel’s work with pea plants was only recognized for its importance after his death.

He observed the traits passed on to pea plants from their parent plants. He realized he could calculate mathematical probabilities that certain traits would be passed on through reproduction.

At the time, biologists viewed heredity as a process of characteristics from each parent blending together in the offspring.  

10. The Earth is Not Flat

It was long held in many cultures throughout history that the world is flat, not round.

In ancient Greece, Pythagoras and Aristotle both theorized that the world is round though many of their contemporaries thought it to be flat. Biblical accounts of the “four corners” of the Earth perpetuated the view of the earth as flat.

It is a myth that educated Europeans in the 15th century believed the world to be flat as Christopher Columbus embarked on his explorations. By that time, it was commonly held that the world is spherical. 

‘To err is science’

Douglas Allchin of the Minnesota Center for the Philosophy of Science summed it up in a paper presented to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2000: “To err is science.”

Allchin noted that learning from mistakes is part of the process, and progress means leaving old views behind for the new.

Will our modern theories one day seem silly? Perhaps some scientists ridiculed today will be redeemed tomorrow.

An Israeli woman has been fined by a religious court for refusing to circumcise her infant son.

The rabbinical court ruled last week that circumcision was for the child's welfare and that the woman must pay 500 shekels (£86) a day until the child has had the procedure. The woman told the court she refuses to physically harm her son.

The case is the first time a religious court in Israel has punished a parent for refusing to circumcise a child. There is no law requiring circumcision in Israel, but the vast majority of Jews are circumcised, in line with Jewish law. Rabbinical courts have authority over certain family matters.

The justice ministry, which is representing the mother, said on Thursday it would be likely appeal the case to Israel's supreme court.

Very First Human Trials Using Cannabis To Treat Brain Cancer Under Way

A European based pharmaceutical company called GW Pharmaceuticals is set to commence its first phase of clinical trials for the treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). It’s a bio-pharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing novel therapeutics from its proprietary cannabinoid product platform.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, GBM accounts for approximately 50% of the 22,500 new cases of brain cancer diagnosed in the United States alone each year.(1) Treatment with regards to brain cancer are very limited which makes the study of cannabis and its effect on brain tumors crucial.

It’s about time, isn’t it? For several years now, pre-clinical research conducted by multiple scientists and universities all over the world have demonstrated that cannabinoids inhibit the viability of glioma cells both in vitro and in vivo. This happens through the process of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Cannabis has successfully demonstrated tumor growth-inhibiting action and an improvement in the therapeutic efficacy of temozolomide, a standard treatment for glioma. GW pharmaceuticals have also followed this research and also conduct it themselves. As a result they’ve shown tumor response to be positively associated with tissue levels of cannabinoids.

We are very excited about moving this compound into further human study and the prospects of cannabinoids as new anti-cancer treatments. This is GW’s first clinical study of cannabinoids as a potential treatment to inhibit tumor growth. We believe this clinical program demonstrates the flexibility and broad application of GW’s cannabinoids platform to treat significant, unmet therapeutic needs. – Dr Steven Wright, Director of Research and Development at GW

The study will involve 20 patients, it will be a two-part study with an open-label phase to assess safety and tolerability of GW cannabinoids in combination with temozolomide, and a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled phase with patients randomized to active or placebo.

The study objective is to assess the tolerability, safety, and pharmacodynamics of a mixture of two principal cannabinoids, THC and CBD in a 1:1 allocation ration, in combination with temozolomide in patients with recurrent GBM.

Unfortunately the study won’t be entirely cannabis, as mentioned earlier. It will in combination with temozolomide, an oral chemotherapy drug. Who knows what effect this may have with regards to using cannabis as treatment, but we will find out. Prior studies indicate that it (cannabis) does nothing but help.

Earlier I published an article outlining four medical studies that prove cannabis can be an effective treatment, and even cure for brain cancer. Here (below) they are again just in-case you missed it. It’s potential benefits are not limited to brain cancer, but all kinds of cancer that suggest a massive amount of human clinical trials should begin. Take a look at the top 20 medical studies that prove cannabis can cure cancer.

In my opinion, many human trials have already been conducted outside of the medical field. A large number of people have used cannabis to treat their cancer, and have been successful in doing so. It’s very hard to trust pharmaceutical companies these days. Home grown GMO and pesticide free cannabis would be ideal, and don’t forget that the best method of ingestion is eating it as opposed to smoking it.

Hopefully this article sparks you to further your research on the healing properties of this plant if you’re interested. It’s a gift from nature and should not be taken lightly when it comes to its medicinal properties. It seems nature has a cure for everything, but our medicine has become an industry. I am a big believer that everything has a cure.

 1. A study published in the British Journal of Cancer, conducted by the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Complutense University in Madrid, this study determined that Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabinoids inhibit tumour growth. They were responsible for the first clinical study aimed at assessing cannabinoid antitumoral action. Cannabinoid delivery was safe and was achieved with zero psychoactive effects. THC was found to decrease tumour cells in two out of the nine patients.

2. A study published in The Journal of Neuroscience examined the biochemical events in both acute neuronal damage and in slowly progressive, neurodegenerative diseases. They conducted a magnetic resonance imaging study that looked at THC (the main active compound in marijuana) and found that it reduced neuronal injury in rats. The results of this study provide evidence that the cannabinoid system can serve to protect the brain against neurodegeneration.

3. A study published in The Journal of Pharmacology And Experimental Therapeutics already acknowledged the fact that cannabinoids have been shown to possess antitumor properties. This study examined the effect of cannabidiol (CBD, non psychoactive cannabinoid compound) on human glioma cell lines. The addition of cannabidiol led to a dramatic drop in the viability of glioma cells. Glioma is the word used to describe a brain tumour.  The study concluded that cannabidiol was able to produce a significant antitumor activity.

4. A study published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics outlines how brain tumours are highly resistant to current anticancer treatments, which makes it crucial to find new therapeutic strategies aimed at improving the poor prognosis of patients suffering from this disease. This study also demonstrated the reversal of tumour activity in Glioblastoma multiforme.

First we shall speak about a matter that has touched hearts everywhere. Typhoon Haiyan is profoundly tragic for everyone who lost dear family and friends, homes and businesses—they don’t know that at soul level they agreed to be part of this major act of planetary cleansing. Because releasing accruing negativity was essential to keep Earth progressing toward balance, all the people whose physical lives ended and the millions who are struggling in the storm’s aftermath embraced the opportunity to evolve by participating as they did.

This kind of enthusiastic mass agreement doesn’t seem even possible in your concept of time, but in the eternal life of the soul and the timelessness of the continuum, opportunities to leap forward in soul growth are eagerly sought, and universe-wide they happen with some frequency. Please do not think that our explanation of a devastating situation is dispassionate or that we are unaffected by the grieving souls and their massive reconstruction ahead. We are among the myriad souls who showered light on the Philippines during and after the storm to assist all who made transition and to fortify the inner strength of survivors.  We feel their heartbreak and fright and confusion about how to start rebuilding their lives, their villages and farms and cities.

How we wish they could know that their loved ones were greeted by name and “Thank you!” as they entered Nirvana. Just as fervently we wish they could know that all who died and they themselves collectively agreed to give Earth that vital lift she needed to stay her course toward balance. If Gaia’s gratitude could be seen, your world would be ablaze with the radiance of its light.

Widespread compassion is adding light to the lives that in this moment are bleak and sorrowing, and the generosity of spirit in which assistance is being given is adding light, too. We see the overview of medical teams, suppliers of food and water, and clearing crews as they persevere in efforts to maneuver through areas where roads were washed out or are filled with destroyed buildings. We see the panic of hungry people looking for food, and we see those who take items that have nothing to do with survival but will be needed when a semblance of normalcy is restored. Light beings throughout this universe are streaming love-light energy to all of those souls.

Fifty years ago the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy shocked the world, but even today very few individuals know that his death had far more than a deeply emotional impact. Eventually the truth will emerge that one of the reasons he was killed was to prevent his abolishing the privately-owned Federal Reserve System and returning the national currency to its dollar status, a move that would have ended the Illuminati’s control of that country’s economy and severely weakened their ability to manipulate the global economy. Half a century later than Kennedy intended, the dismantling of that nefarious system is underway.

I have asked my mother to copy here the thought-provoking message she received from President Kennedy some years ago. [The following message, which was for a British author’s book about Princess Diana that includes messages from her and several others, was transmitted December 30, 2004. I don’t know if the book was published or if so, by what title.]

To the world that I left over forty years past, I say that my spirit of love for my country and Earth never departed.  My leaving was not by an accident any more than was Princess Diana’s death.  Our souls had agreed to serve in this way.  We knew at some level that our lives would be short on Earth by good intention, and we see that much has been accomplished in our names—more than if we had remained there.

Our lives were not lived in perfection, nor were they intended to be.  Our human frailties are like many others who also did much to assist in raising the human spirit and promoting the value of each life. 

I use again my words that still are publicly remembered: Ask not what your country can do for you.  Ask what you can do for your country.  But now I amend those: Ask not what your world can do for you.  Ask what you can do for your world. LOVE is the answer, the ONLY answer to rising above the misery still befalling so much of humanity.

The spirit in which Diana and I both endeavored to serve in our respective positions is stronger than ever within us.  More than ever before in the history of Earth there is opportunity to spread love throughout the world with feelings and actions.  More than ever before there is imperative need for this!  The moment of great transition is at hand.  Contribute to this for the sake of all life on Earth and your soul’s divine nurturing.

We are never separate one from another.  We are One with the Universe.

If comet Ison explodes, will any large fragments be pulled by Earth’s gravity into a position that can endanger us?  No. Spacecraft roaming the skies are on the lookout for comets like Ison and other large celestial bodies that could pose danger to Earth, and when one might, they use their technology to detour its route. In the case of smaller objects, they maneuver them to an area where no heavy damage can result or they smash them to smithereens, whichever is safer for you and the planet.

No, a time has not been set for official acknowledgement of other civilizations’ presence, the landing of ships and introduction of family members living among you. God is in charge of timing because only at that height of awareness can it be known when Earth humankind is ready to welcome “aliens.” Your film industry has done a good job of portraying people from other civilizations as monstrosities that want to annihilate you or handsome, sly beings who want to enslave you—images of grotesque creatures and stories of ruthless intent are seared in many, many minds.

Some readers feel that nothing of noteworthy substance can happen until your space family is working alongside you, and that is not so. Because it is your world, it is up to you to decide what societal, political and economic reforms you want and endeavor to accomplish them; and in numerous messages we have delineated the many ways that you have been making strides toward those significant goals. What your family from other civilizations will do is tackle environmental issues that are beyond your capabilities—their technologies can dematerialize nuclear waste and depleted uranium, purify polluted rivers and seas, and restore deserts to arable condition. Also, their free energy systems are far advanced of your own, which by and large still are under Illuminati suppression.

Others are asking if channeled reports are true that benevolent ETs became discouraged and abandoned you and the only ones near Earth now will come as conquerors. That is a blatant lie set forth by base entities who know that only benevolent members of our universal family are in your solar system and they have been assisting you all along.

We cited one situation above; however, other civilizations have been helping Earth and her successive generations of residents throughout her history. Mother, please copy part of the book that describes their many kinds of assistance.

 Assistance from extraterrestrials started long before their infusion of the light that saved Earth’s life more than seven decades ago.

Throughout Earth’s history our universal family has served her in one supportive role or another. Members of some highly advanced civilizations had a hand in designing and establishing the flora and fauna, and human life on the planet derived from several civilizations’ seeding programs.  Among today’s populace are descendants of those ancient residents, some of whom were gods and goddesses.  …

The Akashic records, which contain every soul’s lifeprint of each physical lifetime wherever in this universe each was experienced, are maintained and safeguarded by some of Ashtar’s forces.

For long ages some of Hatonn’s Pleiadian crews have been on rotation maintenance tours to insure the safety of the light grid around Nirvana that prohibits entry by rogue entities.  …

After your air travel started, the crews deflected the trajectory of debris or dematerialized it if it posed potential danger to planes in flight.  They also have rescued persons thought lost in ships at sea or planes that disappeared; the rescued parties physically entered a different energy plane, which is why they weren’t seen or heard from again.

Extraterrestrial assistance with unprecedented swiftness and intensity started over 70 years ago, when Earth cried out for help to keep her weakened planetary body alive. By God’s authorization, civilizations responded with a massive infusion of light to prevent the planet spinning out of orbit and certain death. Of course the in-pouring of light was available to all of Earth’s residents too, and those who responded started generating their own light with greater forcefulness.  …

In addition to beaming light to the planet, which will continue until it is well within fourth density, various civilizations are using their technologies in a number of ways in accordance with Earth’s desires. For instance, when the Illuminati cause a geophysical event, the crews lay down an electromagnetic grid that distributes earthquake or volcanic activity and lessens destruction and death toll without reducing the amount of negativity released by those events. In the case of Illuminati-created weather, the crews decrease the wind velocity of violent storms and steer them away from heavily populated areas along coastlines. [Note: That information was transmitted prior to the removal of weather-manipulating scientists by space family members living among you. Mother Nature is back in control of storms, earthquakes and wildfires, her means of releasing negativity.]

Remember the viruses called SARS, avian flu, swine flu and H1N1 that abruptly appeared on the scene simultaneously with media hoopla that each disease, in turn, was “feared to become a pandemic”? No pandemic happened because members of our universal family neutralized those laboratory-designed viruses, thus dooming the dark ones’ double intent for developing them—genuine pandemics with great loss of life and global chaos and fear.

Crews in your skies, who are there by the thousands and thousands, are using their technologies to reduce as much as possible the radiation from Japan’s damaged nuclear reactors, and they rendered less harmful to marine life the oil that kept gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. They are ameliorating the toxic effects of weaponry and other pollutants, and a civilization appearing as cloud formations is leading the way in cleansing Earth’s atmosphere.

As important as all those kinds of assistance are, perhaps the most significant help since “9/11” has been preventing the Illuminati from using nuclear warheads to mount similarly devastating terrorist attacks.  A dozen or so attempts have been thwarted by rendering the warheads impotent, sometimes in combination with missile malfunctions.  This is not a violation of Creator’s law of free will—it is honoring Earth’s free will choice that there will be no more terrorism like “9/11.”

Some of the strongest, most experienced light beings in this universe are right there among you, working behind the scenes to guide the essential changes so that as many of Earth’s residents who choose to accompany her into the higher planes can do so. This is how universally beloved and significant Earth is and how beloved and important YOU are!  …

These volunteers from spiritually evolved civilizations took on human bodies so they could live and work among you undetected.  Although they recognize each other from the distinctive auras that reflect their souls’ evolutionary station, only a few of you are sufficiently energy-sensitive to see them as different from anyone else.

The purpose of their presence derives from their superior intelligence that gives them entry into fields where they can beneficially influence actions and activities during this crucial time of Earth’s transition process.

What these benevolent visitors are doing is not a rarity in the universe—souls continue evolving through service to lesser developed civilizations.   As you continue to grow spiritually and intellectually, eventually you will be willing and able to help enlighten and uplift lesser evolved souls.

Thank you, Mother.  Now let us speak again about negativity for a moment. Some time ago we told you that the negativity that had become deeply entrenched due to millennia of humankind’s brutality to each other and the animals had been released. So, where is negativity coming from now?  As ever before, from the citizens of Earth.

In previous messages we have said that everything in existence is energy.  We have spoken about the power of thoughts, feelings, and written and spoken words, and we have stressed how crucial it is to focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Also we have explained why forgiveness and gratitude are so important. Evidence of these universal truths is in the ancient practice of ho’oponopono, which ties them all together into an “elixir of divine grace,” you might say.

The accomplishment of Dr. Hew Len, formerly a psychologist at a hospital for the criminally insane in Hawaii, is a stunning example of ho’oponopono’s efficacy. Instead of seeing patients during the couple of years he was there, he stayed in his office, sometimes looking at their files, and repeating over and over and over “I’m sorry.  Please forgive me.  I love you. Thank you.” By his accepting responsibility for the patients’ status—in essence, acknowledging the inseparable connection of all souls and that whatever one does affects all others—they started improving and continued until they were healed and released.

This remarkable proof of the power of thoughts and feelings can be enlightening and inspiring to everyone. Sharing that story along with feeling grateful for our universal family’s diligence, assistance and unconditional love will speed the day when life in your world is peaceful and harmonious.

Hawaii’s Big Island Bans GMO Crops and Biotech Companies

The Big Island of Hawaii has a new law that bans biotech companies, as well as all open-air growing of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The bill exempts papayas and other GMO crops currently being cultivated and includes fines of $1,000 a day for violators.

Mayor Billy Kenoi hasn’t indicated his stance on the bill, but he has 10 days to veto it. The county council could override a veto with a vote from six members.

“WOOHOO! WE DID IT!” read the Facebook page of GMO Free Hawaii Island. “We ask for your continued support on the following two items: Write a letter to thank our council members for protecting the health of our community and Hawaii’s agricultural lands, and encourage Mayor Billy Kenoi to sign Bill 113 into law.”

Supporters of the measure filled the council chambers at the West Hawaii Civic Center with applause after the vote late Tuesday, according to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

“We’re stoked. We’re relieved,” resident Blake Watson told the newspaper. “This is a great first step.”

“We are at a juncture,” Councilwoman Margaret Wille, who introduced the bill, told Honolulu Civil Beat. ”Do we move forward in the direction of the agro-chemical monoculture model of agriculture, or do we move toward eco-friendly, diversified farming?

At least two farmers’ groups supported the measure—the Hawaii Farmers Union United, whose focus is on family farms, and the Kona Coffee Farmers Association.

Farmers supporting the bill said they fear cross-pollination between modified and non-modified crops, which they say can hurt or even close their markets.

Papayas were exempted in the Big Island bill because most of the 200 papaya plantations in Hawaii are planted with genetically engineered trees. A team of scientists modified the DNA of the papaya in the 1990s to withstand a devastating ringspot virus.

Large biotech companies like Syngenta, Monsanto, Pioneer, Dow and BASF have long been experimenting with GMO crops and seeds in Hawaii. They have farms on the islands of Oahu, Kauai and Molokai, but they’ve never operated on Hawaii’s Big Island.

The world’s biotech giants have set up shop in Hawaii in recent years, attracted by year-round growing conditions and an ecosystem favorable for testing and growing produce such as seed corn. The biotechnology industry has all but completely supplanted the sugar cane and pineapple industries that used to dominate the Hawaiian landscape.

The Big Island bill comes just days after Kauai County Council overrode a mayoral veto on a bill that mandates disclosure of GMO crops.

Anne Lopez, spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office, said earlier this fall that the office has no plans to weigh in on the Big Island’s proposed ban or challenge it if it’s adopted.

“We have not analyzed it to come up with a legal opinion,” she said.

In 2008, the county adopted a ban on GMO coffee and taro that has not been legally challenged.
