TEMPO Interactive, Purwokerto:Around 75 percent out of 2.397 disabled children in Banyumas do not t school, since there are only three schools for children with special needs (SLB) in the area.
"The number of disabled children is high, but only few of them are able to go to school," Juwadi, a teacher at SLB Yakut Purwokerto, told Tempo yesterday. He thought the government did not pay enough attention to this problem. Banyumas needs public schools to accommodate disabled people.
Meanwhile, Cipto Waluyo, an official at Bayumas Educational Service, Cipto Waluyo, claimed that parents of disabled children are not aware that their children need to go to school. He also denied that Banyumas lacks schools for children with special needs. "Three private schools should be enough," he said.
Cahyo said that was why his office has no plans to build public schools for children with special needs. He also admitted not having an accurate data on the number of disabled children in his region.
