An Indonesian student allegedly jumped to his death in a Singapore university on Monday after stabbing one of his professors in a course project.
Agence France-Presse news agency reported that the final-year student of the electrical and electronics engineering school at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was pronounced dead on the scene, while the professor was in stable condition after receiving treatment.
Detik.com news portal identified the student as David Hartanto, a graduate of the prestigious SMK Penabur I high school, Jakarta. David had been under the supervision of Professor Chan Kap Luk for his final project.
Singapore police declined to give details pending a full investigation.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah said the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore had received local police reports and would track down the identity produced by Singapore police with their immigration data.
“We will inform the family and convey our condolences to them. It may take some time before we can have the body sent home, pending a police investigation and autopsy requirements. We will wait for further investigations by local police into the case,” Faizasyah told The Jakarta Post.
To his knowledge, this was the first case of an Indonesian student stabbing a professor, he said.
“Our embassy is actually very open to counseling students in Singapore. In the near future, our embassy will invite (Indonesian) students studying at the university to have a chat and share with us.”
Undergraduate Fabian Ng, who saw the student's body, told AFP by telephone he had seen blood stains on the roof of a walkway five stories above where the body had been found face down.
"The university is deeply shocked and saddened by the incident. The matter will be investigated thoroughly," its president, Su Guaning, said.
