Bengkulu (ANTARA News) - Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie symbolically handed over Rp24.5 billion in National Self-Reliant Community Empowerment Program (PNPM) funds to Bengkulu province on Saturday.
The minister on the occasion also extended symbolically rice assistance for target poor families (TTS) in north Bengkulu.
"This year, Bengkulu gets Rp24.5 billion in PNPM allocations for 1,400 villages, which means that each village would receive an average assistance of Rp180 - Rp200 million," the minister said.
Aburizal Bakrie said that on national scale in 2009 the PNPM program could provide new employment for about 14.4 million people.
With regard to the rice for the poor program in 2009, the minister said the rice assistance would be extended to 18.5 target poor families.
"This year we are providing 15 kg rice per RTS with a price of Rp1,600 per kg. We hope it would alleviate the people's burden because the price of rice at present is about Rp5,000 per kg," the minister said.
In the meantime, North Bengkulu district head Imron Rosadi said the PNPM program was very useful for villagers in rural areas because the form of the assistance was directly proposed by the village concerned.
