TEMPO Interactive, Slawi: The number of commercial sex workers in Tegal infected with the HIV continues to rise.
The data at the Family Health International, collaborating with Fatayat NU, recorded at least 92 HIV patients in some red-light districts in the regency.
“Last year there were only 50 people,” said Zakia Asegaf, Family Health International’s HIV/AIDS Management Volunteer Coordinator.
According to Zakia, they are spread out in a number of red-light districts, such as Kampung Maribaya, Kramat, Pengasinan, and Peleman. Family Health International is a non-governmental institution that tries to prevent the virus from spreading. “Last Tuesday, we took blood samples in some of those districts,” Zakia said.
The people of Tegal are judged to be vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection. According to Zakia, this is because the number of commercial sex workers continues to increase. Per October, there were 140 people. Last year, only 68 people checked their health.
