Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The presidential physicans` team treating ailing former President Soeharto at Pertamina hospital in South Jakarta on Tuesday prohibited the latter from receiving visitors due to his worsening condition.
"Since Pak Harto`s condition deteriorated again on Tuesday, he needs more intensive treatment and monitoring. Therefore, visitors are not allowed for the time being to meet him personally," head of presidential medical team Mardjo Soebiandono told a news conference on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Dr Hermansyur, a member of the medical team, said the ailing former strongman was prohibited from receiving visitors because of his worsening condition.
Hermansyur said people who visited Soeharto earlier were allowed to meet Soeharto personally but now this could not be allowed.
"Visitors today are not allowed to meet Soeharto in person but they can only be received by his family," Hermansyur said, adding that the number of people visiting Soeharto on the fifth day in the hospital was not as big as that on previous days.
The health of Soeharto who was rushed to the hospital last Friday in critical condition, was reported on Monday to have improved but his condition deteriorated again on Tuesday after his hemoglobin level dropped and fluid had entered his lungs.
Mardjo Soebiandono said more fluid had seeped into Soeharto`s lungs and there was blood in his feces and urine - a condition that caused his hemoglobin level to drop.
Having come to power in 1965, Soeharto was forced to step down in May 1998 following anti-government protests and an economic crisis.
After he had resigned, he was charged with embezzling 571 million dollars from state charities while in power but due to his poor health in 2000, his case was dropped.
The former strongman has been admitted to hospital several times for various ailments, including strokes which had left him brain-damaged and unable to speak coherently.
He was hospitalized for more than two weeks in 2002 when doctors described him as in critical condition as he was suffering an intestinal bleeding, and in 2005 he was readmitted to hospital again for a similar ailment.
