A suspected bird flu victim, AT, 33, died early Monday morning after being treated for four days at the Flamboyan isolation ward of Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung.
Hospital director Cissy Rachiana Prawira said AT died of respiratory problems.
AT had been a suspected bird flu patient even though two previous PCR analyses indicated he was free of the H5N1 virus. At the time of his death, the doctor's team was still waiting for the results of a third PCR analysis.
"He suffered from acute pneumonia. His respiratory system's shutdown irreparably damaged other organs," said Cissy.
Cissy said the doctor's team handling the case had not yet taken a sample from AT's throat to be analyzed at the Development and Research Agency of the National Health Department in Jakarta.
Previously, AT was treated at Rancaekek Clinic for a high fever and cough.
Hasan Sadikin Hospital admitted another suspected bird flu patient on Sunday evening. Ce, 24, from Majalaya, Bandung, is suspected of contracting bird flu after having been in contact with dead poultry at his home.
Ce's condition is now stable, with a temperature of 36 degrees Celcius. The doctor's team is still waiting for the results of a throat sample analysis.
