Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - Airlangga University (Unair) and the Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS) have sent teams to Bojonegoro, East java, to help flood victims in the area.
Unair`s team was led by Unair Rector Prof Fasich, an Unair spokesman, Dr Mangestuti Agil, said here Thursday.
The team left Surabaya for Bojonegoro last Wednesday (Jan. 2) and would present relief aid consisting of among other things instant noodle, drinking water and medicines, she said.
Unair was planning to send another team to focus on education and health assistance, she said.
Earlier, on Monday (Dec. 31, 2007), Dr Soetomo General Hospital and Unair had dispatched a 25-member team consisting of doctors and university students to the flood-hit areas.
Meanwhile, ITS`s team consisting of planning, civil engineering and disaster experts, was expected to conduct a survey in Bojonegoro, Lamongan and Ngawi, to deal with floods which wrtr triggered by the overflowing of Bengawan Solo river.
The death toll in the floods and landslides that occurred in 21 districts and municipalities in East Java over the past few days reached 31 on Wednesday, a provincial official said.
Thousands of people from five flood-hit areas were still staying at the locations to which they had evacuated. The floods also inundated 24,781 hectares of paddy fields in 14 districts, and 967
hectares of fish ponds in two districts.
