Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih on Wednesday introduced a program to register deaths, in an effort to identify medical causes of mortality and find areas for improvements.
Endang said at the launch of the program in Kendal, near the Central Java capital of Semarang, that the program would be tried out in seven other provinces before being implemented nationwide later this year,
Through the program, the government aims to collect more accurate data on mortality rates, and on causes of death.
“Experience shows that it’s not easy to estimate the number of deaths, let alone their causes. We have learned that 40 percent of deaths are not reported,” Endang said.
Under the new program, family members of the deceased would be asked about the causes of death.
“The data on the causes of deaths will be used to improve our health intervention programs,” she said.
The Health Ministry is working with the Home Ministry in managing the registration program. The two institutions will draft a joint regulation as the legal basis of a new policy on the registration of deaths.
