TEMPO Interactive, Semarang:Five cigarette worker unions in Kudus, grouped under the Workers Union Alliance and People for Workers, are demanding that businessmen immediately register their workers for the state-run social security service(Jamsostek) program.
“In PT Djarum alone, there are around 70.000 workers,” said Chudlori from the Kudus Cigarette Worker Forum, demonstrating at the Central Java Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) office yesterday. They also said that many freelance workers are paid less than the regency/municipality minimum wage rate.
Central Java DPRD’s Commission E member, Masruchan, said he was concerned with the fate of the workers. “The owner of PT Djarum is one of the richest people in Asia, but why aren't his workers prosperous,” he asked.
The Central Java Manpower and Transmigration Office chief, Siswolaksono, said the amount of wages paid to freelance workers is up to the workers and their respective employers. “It is a bilateral system,” he said. However, Jamsostek is a requirement that must be complied by the company.
