An Indonesian migrant worker was sentenced to death by the High Court here Friday for trafficking 1.7 kg of marijuana last year, Antara reported.
Alan Setiawan, 39, was found guilty of trafficking the drug at a fertilizer godown in Port Klang at 8:30 p.m. on April 25 last year. The offence under the 1952 Dangerous Drugs Act carries a mandatory death sentence on conviction.
Judicial Commissioner Mohd Yazid Mustafa held that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Alan was carrying the drug when he was arrested. He said Alan had claimed in his defense the plastic bag containing the drug was carried by his friend, Udin, who threw it to the floor and fled when police arrived, leaving him to face the music.
However, a witness had testified there was no Udin and clearly saw Alan carrying the bag when police raided the premises.
He also found Alan’s defense that he had gone to the godown with Udin to look for a job, and had been offered one before he was caught, unreasonable as there was no one around.
