TEMPO Interactive, Makassar:The Head of the Makassar Social Services Authority, Ibrahim Saleh, has criticized discriminative acts towards disabled people in government and private agencies.
He said that these agencies have not been consistent in fulfilling the 1 percent quota of work for disabled people. “They only consider their own benefits and feel that disabled people have limited capabilities,” he said last Saturday, in response to a disabled students protest in front of the residence of the South Sulawesi Governor, Syahrul Yasin Limpo.
Even worse, government and private offices do not provide facilities for disabled people, such as special elevators, until now.
There are around 6,000 disabled people in South Sulawesi.
The government has already provided funding and education aid and distributed it to about 40 special schools, from primary schools up to senior high schools. Besides that, every disabled person receives assistance of up to Rp300,000 per month.
Previously, dozens of disabled students protested in front of Governor Syahrul’s residence, demanding that the government erase discriminative acts and negative stigma against disabled people.
One of the sad cases is that they’re not allowed to participate in civil servant selections. “We really regret that. Our friend had passed administrative selection,” said protest coordinator Abdul Rahman, who has low vision.
Rahman said that one requirement of civil servant selection was physical and spiritual health According to Rahman, being disabled is not a disease.”We can do anything that normal people do,” he said.
Protesters demanded the government pay attention to accessibility needs of disabled people in public places.
They demand the enactment of a disabled persons state degree, that would give work opportunities and inclusive education to disabled people.
Unfortunately, during the protest commemorating The International Day of Disabled People on 3 December, not one public official met the protesters, who had been rallying for two hours, until they gave up and left the governor’s residence.
