Onlookers at two of Jakarta’s upscale malls were in shock on Monday after two individuals jumped from the fifth floors of two separate shopping centers.
At the Grand Indonesia Mall in Central Jakarta, police said a young woman died instantly after landing on an escalator railing on the ground floor.
Tanah Abang Police Chief Detective First Insp. Sutrisno identified the victim as Ice Juniar, 24, from Palembang, South Sumatra. He said she had been suffering from a mental disorder and was undergoing treatment at Dharmawangsa Hospital.
Kuncoro Nurwibowo, corporate secretary of the mall, told the Jakarta Globe that according to closed-circuit television recordings, the victim jumped at 4:10 p.m.
“CCTV footage showed that she was walking alone when she suddenly jumped. The police are still investigating and conducting an identification process on her body,” Kuncoro said.
The remains were taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta for an autopsy.
In the second incident, police said a man jumped from the fifth floor of Senayan City Mall at 8:40 p.m., landing on the ground floor. The man, identified as Reno, 25, was rushed to Pelni Hospital in Petamburan, Central Jakarta, but did not survive his injuries. His body was also taken to the Cipto hospital for an autopsy.
Chief of the Senayan police post, Adj. Comr. Mustakim, said the man was believed to have committed suicide.
“We heard a sound like a fallen object. It turned out that what had fallen was a man,” said Loise Stefani, a witness. “He had jumped from the glass railing on the fifth floor, in front of Takemori restaurant.”
